  • Capsize? Don't think so. More like an ad for stability, or else adrenaline rushes for all treating a Hunter like a Laser.

  • To this day I still point and laugh at others who sail a Hunter

  • The guy obviously has no clue how to sail. Instead of turning the boat windward to de-power, he hauls the tiller to starboard and puts the boat at a right able to the wind which of course brings him down. You have to really work at it to do this on a 10 knot wind! He also could have spilled the wind by releasing his main. Oh well ... live and learn! AB

  • That's not a capsize, you loser mother f$&ker!

  • @oartalk But it feels like one. Don't you hear the photographer praising it? You know everything, douche ass bitch.

  • I don't see why the guy went to leeward like that. It seemed like it was going just fine until he did. I would have pulled in the jib if was on a furler, pointed it a little more downwind and reefed the main.

  • I miss it when dose it capsize

  • why did they realese the sails if the point was to try to capsize it??

  • @International588 Actually the point was not to "capsize" it, but to learn what happens in a "Round-up" . the boat will turn into the wind as the genoa (front sail) empties.

As panacruise mentioned, the Hunter (and many boats with 'spade" rudders) lose rudder authority when the force of the wind is too far forward, as boat heels over. Cranking the wheel increases the rudder angle of attack, losing rudder force. better to reef the genoa, trim main. and sail hands off.

  • 00:21 Stop wettin the cocaine you stupid m/f.

  • This was a test obviously judging by the buoyancy bag on top that's full of water that was purposely done it wasn't an accident that was to show the stability of the boat and how will right itself.

  • I don't figure that. A sloop will spill more air out of the sails as it heels. The guy is running a bit too much sail on a small boat for the conditions, but I coudn't believe how tender the boat was... it went straight over quick! Does this boat have a retractable keel which wasn't cracked fully down?

  • One word. VANG. :)

  • Modern boats with little ballest or deep keel, how quickly she went and not a wave to be seen.

  • Why ???

  • Podstawowy błąd, koleś przy przewracaniu chwycił się talii, gdyby wyluzował grota może by się nie wywalili, jeszcze ten cięzar na maszcie...

  • this is what you get from not looking out for squalls when you have wind from backstay

and seriously the helmsman did nothig.. he should turn right (in 0:17 ) the yaht to loose some wind and prevent that from happening.. also if there was anyone holding the mainsail should let it go

  • @somebody1310 there's no squall there, it's gusts your thinking of. If it was a squall there would be no nice blue sky

  • @eltonfan990 There could be a squall... the video doesn't show us the sun so you can't be sure.. I assumed that it was, or that it was just a stronger blow of air by looking on sails, rudder.. anyway I see your point.

  • Love my hunter on Percy Priest here in Nashville...

  • That is a broach, not a capsize or a knockdown. Used to do that on occasion, but learned to take reef in time.

I like the funny Radar reflector though. ;)

  • Warren Luhrs is a great sailor and his boats reflect his soul

  • where is the capsize?

  • The worst mistake the made was to Sail a Hunter

  • This video is ridiculous. A keel boat would have kept on sailing and righted itself at the appropriate angle.

  • This treatment of three alcoholics is definitely against the Geneva Convention.

  • se parece mucho al catalina

  • I wonder if they had drained the water ballast tank for this

  • There's definitely something to be said against the cheaper, mass-produced vessels, but a lot of the so-called sailors I've personally seen bashing these boats are 20 to 30-something year olds who've never *personally* owned anything larger than (or more expensive than) a bug or a laser.

  • So, lots of people hating on Hunters. What don't you like about them?

  • No doubt an entry level boat. Regardless, Id sail that bitch straight from SD to Papeete. (coconut milk run) Ha, Everyone would be buying me drinks. (can't believe you're alive)

Not so much an unsafe boat.

It's more like a Hunter is designed or engineered by Mohawk canoe, or Panther Airboat.

  • still a garbage boat

  • the first problem is that they were sailing a hunter...

  • I want to see get knock over and then right itself.

  • They should have let it go down.......it's a Hunter!!!

  • shit boats

  • wasnt even a capsize

  • Its a caravan with a stick some wire and a cloth.

  • Also, look at how much weather helm there is leading up to the broach. Knowing how to trim sail correctly avoids all of this...

  • It's not a capsize, it's a broach. A s Bluenoser correctly points out the boat corrects itself. To the crew: EASE MAIN before you get to that point.

  • ugly freaking boat

  • More of a spinout than a capsize, Not even a knockdown if you ask me

  • That's got to be the biggest radar reflector I have ever seen

  • That's also called "rounding up", skills also prevent this by knowing when to reef so you can stay on course.

  • I sailed a Hunter 460 from LA to Brisbane. Great boat the performed well.

  • that wasnt a capsize it was the boat broaching

  • Clearly a deliberate excercise, which is nice to see, especially if you own such a vessel. Yachts don't capsize unless the ballast keel drops off,if they do then the designer should be shot. Dinghys capsize because they only have a board, usually with little weight to stop the boat sliding, as the crew are in affect-the weight.

  • that wasn't a capsize

  • hunters are bath tubs

  • the people on the other boat who are filming think it's really funny.

  • Get into the cabin and close all doors, hatches, and windows!!!!

  • this was obviously a training situation, hence indeed the flotation device dangling from the mast, but unnecessary, since in these situation the boats always loose rudderpower and run into the wind. one bad aspect, when training this the companionway should always be closed, to avoid a possible partial flooding of the cabin

  • Anyone considered this was deliberately done as an exercise? Might just explain the flotation at the masthead, the guy leaning on the mast and the guy in the red jacket's actions! !

  • Why is the asshole recording laughing? The guy in the red jacket could have died.

  • @mdozturk

It's just a knockdown - not a big deal on a real boat with decent crew.

  • @mdozturk It looks like a training excercise or demonstration, the person in the red jacket actually deliberatly helped the boat to tip onto her side!

  • Just about a full knockdown, but why not let out the sheet or steer in to wind?? Regardless, friends don't let friends buy Hunters. If they all fell off, the boat will sail better without the crew.

  • idiot guy with the red jacket, hey the ship is leaning over, let me check *goes down* oh, yeah now it goes even more,,

  • whats the barrel on the mast for?

  • called broaching not a capsize

  • uncleat the main sheet and u wont have that problem

  • thats not a capsize

  • @anonymoussailing1046 - Correct. It's a "knockdown," and not an impressive one at that.

  • @mousepad99 Car? Don't know what you mean there. I am simply a multihull fanatic. I don't know why people still sail these slow deep drafted things of the past. Here comes the up wind fall back excuse.

  • this boat will never capsize, nice try.

  • That's a broach, not a capsize. It's all common and they apparently have some sort of a weight hanging from their mast which makes it even less impressive

  • why do people still sail lead sleds?

  • @13lackhole Hunters are great boats.

  • does that boat have water ballast ?? i know magregors do

  • @sheddski im pretty sure that hunters don't have ballast tanks unless they where put in as an aftermarket product

  • @sheddski no its because they are very light boats so they can get knocked around very easly but they are good for lake sailing when there are not so many waves.

  • Talk about saving the situation!

  • So wouldn't that be called a broach, not a capsize?

  • looks to me that they were trying to capsize it, theres a big heavy thing in the mast trying to tip it over :o

  • @DfFuse That "big heavy thing" is an inflatable float in case they succeed in capsizing it, which they are obviously trying to do.

  • @DfFuse

It keeps it from inverting you tool

  • Techecally it didn't capsize because the mast didn't go in the water.

  • why?

  • you people are all idiots.

The POINT of the video is: IF you want to sail your hunter around with a 55 gallon drum full of cocain up in your mast, you CAN.

  • This is actually a test to weed out people that aren't smart enough to operate a sailboat. Now, everyone that didn't realize that they were trying to capsize the boat can leave. Thanks for watching but you won't be needed!

  • Quit puttin down Hunter sailboats! After I got mine off layaway at Kmart I sailed in 5mph winds from one end of the catfish pond to the other and it only capsized once!

  • wrong the barrel is for when a shark comes around, then you shoot a harpoon into it with the barrel tied to it. Like in the movie JAWS. "he can't go down, not with 3 barrel he can't".

  • The barrel is to help them capsize. It's a display to show the stablilty of the boat.

  • I really dont know why people insult hunter boats, perhaps its got something to do with a small penis size or some other envy. I delivered a 33 foot hunter through Bass Straight in 45knot winter storms and found it to be very comfortable and more than up for the task. Another occasion I raced a 335 at Hamilton Island race week and was more than surprised when we started over taking 35-38ft beneteaus and catalinas etc and won the division..

  • New hunters are better then the old ones and this video does show the boat rounding up well when over powered, but most all boats will do this. What will capsize a boat is a breaking or rogue wave. Put that boat in the same situation where there is a strong current and opposing waves and you'll see a different situation.

  • @ddsailor25 when you use a comparison - it should be *than

  • you've got to be pretty thick to dont understand that this is staged, and that the barrel in the mast is a aid for capsailing

  • what is the thing in the mast that looks like a barrel

  • Seriously, do they know how to sail? release the main sheet already. All sailboats are designed to head to wind if over powered.

  • Seriously, do they know how to sail? release the main sheet already.

  • Or was the orange thing a floatation device to keep from turtleing? I was impressed. Sure beats what would happen with my Lightning ;-)

  • why didn`t you ease the main? it would have been a lot more effective

  • This video was made by a hunter dealer to show how safe these boats are... Even with a 300 pound weight hanging high in the mast, and three people doing everything they possibly can to capsize the boat, it simply turned up to weather and righted itself. I believe this is a hunter 23.5 not the newer 240.

  • A Hunter is the worst piece of crap boat. What is that orange thing hanging from the mast?

  • hunters are some of the worst boats around, ask anyone who knows anything about a quality boat. hunters are plastic boats with no real purpose other than to sit at the dock. as a matter of fact they shouldnt even be allowed at the dock. they are ugly handle terribly and are poorly constucted

  • not a capsize its a blow down because the boat righted itself

  • those boats are deadly

  • wtf! dosent it have any keel?!

  • lol... skipper is so cool and calm... doesnt panic, just grabs hold of something... and kudos to the other guy for riding the mast like a champ hahah

  • I think they intended this capsize, look at the orange object hanging from the mast. Its not blowing about in the wind so is more likely a weight than a float. I think this was a sea trial of some kind.

  • Can't you see they did this in purpose, they used the weight of the tank in order to do this type of maneuver more easy...

  • must be some king of training or what is that thing hanging of the top of the mast ?

  • @a6km

I guess it's the bag for the spinaker. :)

  • Fail with the water Tank on wrong site :D

  • @W4v3Rid3r its not a supertanker, and eaven if it had tanks on both sides youd have to change the water each time you change the sail of side

  • hat das Boot einen kil ???

  • you knew there was going to be trouble as soon as that guy hustled to her port side.

  • Most any keel boat will head to wind when knocked down, even a Hunter. The main was sheeted way too tight, and then the crew heads to leeward when the boat starts to heel! And the dangling float -- gross.

  • I'm impressed by the hunter! See the way she heads up and rights herself? These guys are working hard to capsize and they just can't do it. Would make me confident in the boat.

  • Is this a keel boat?? looks like it's super light and not stable at all...well, just looks it..

  • @eveminator666

The yellow thing looks very ugly. Coulnt you somehow attach that to the mast?

  • ... nice to see a keel boater almost not afraid of the water: give me a cat and a trapeze line, keels are really just excuses for a barbecue and a drink: not that there's anything wrong with that - provided the sailing doesn't interrupt your meal.

  • I guess their definition of capsize is different than mine. :/

  • it aint easy to cap a Mono hull.. LOL

  • why is it that they didn't dump the main before the round up??? It's not like they were racing

  • Lucky..what the hell is the yellow thing hanging from the mast..?? Weight..? are these guys french..?

  • Lucky..what the hell is the yellow thing hanging from the mast..??

  • Of course this was deliberate. Watch the guy forward at the mast add his weight along with the fellow at the boom work to heel the boat over. The barrel weight was placed to make this possible. Excellent stuff. Looks like great fun!

  • Sweet !

I just bought a 23.5 today , this video helped with the War Dept. and her decision making assistance ;^> .

This should be an ideal boat for me .

  • lol first mistake, sailing a hunter

  • @13lackhole so what would you recommend?

  • @13lackhole is obviously a douche.

  • @13lackhole bullshit my hunter is brilliant

  • Excellent test, really shows that even if you are trying to capsize it, you can't! That is a water ballasted centerboard boat right?

  • @emkayusa Yes... the 23.5 is a water-ballasted centerboard design. It's one of the best trailerables around. The walk-through transom is a nice feature. Some of them also have the SS pushpit railing seats that come standard on the 240.

  • what?? it didn't capsize a boat isn't offically capsized until its mast head is in the wate rlol

  • I have tried all day today to capsize m sailboat without success,

  • looks to me like their sail trim is wrong. watching the round up, it took quite a while for their sails to start luffing up, so it seems they were on a beam reach with sails too hardened in.

  • kids this is what sailing a pool looks like. Is that the turtle for the spinnaker hanging from the masthead? Pretty sure this is what caused the broach in a medium puff as the turtle or whatever it is had too much weight to leeward.

  • @lancelotdulake

It's a weight, they did it on purpose

  • NOT a capsize. Not even a knockdown. Simply a broach.

  • Hahaha, that was close!

  • Wow, that looks like almost a 70 degree heel. My boat starts to loose steering at around 35. That keg hanging from the mast is hilarious!

  • As soon as the rudder comes out of the water it turns head to wind and self-corrects the situation. Pretty good.

  • @Bluenoser613 the boat is shaped that was so when it heals it turns. same with a 470 you can steer with your wieght just by making the boat heel

  • I think I missed the capsize in this video.

  • gooood boat, immediately turns into the wind when its capsizing

  • Now that looks like some scary Fun

  • That's what helps keep my wife sailing!

  • that was just a round up it happens to every sailboat like the 48ft one I sailed on that was way some crazy shit

  • not a capsize
