  • You never know the truth behind the smile

  • OK I actually don't get this film. I guess I have to be a radio presenter to understand it. Can somebody please explain it? :)

  • @jessisnacorn I think what it's trying to show is that these breakfast presenters have to go into work everyday to talk about other peoples accomplishments and pretend to be excited and happy which might just make them feel worse. They always appear to be high-spirited but it's really just a mask they put on, and when they take it off they usually realise how depressing there lifes might really be. This short is open to a little interpretation however and that's just my thoughts :)

  • @Dimitri4416 oh ok. thanks :)

  • wait? why are they depressed???i see comments of how people are like "oh yeah i was a breakfast radio person and this is exactly how i felt" I dont understand why you feel that.....help?

  • broken people from the broken world... blind and dying

  • great film it really shows how hard depressions can be! Thx for the up load.

  • Im a breakfast producer & everytime i watch this i know im not alone...

  • Is this meant to be funny or serious? Cause I was laughing the whole time x)

  • This is the best tropfest film I've ever seen.

  • Comment removed

  • i didnt think it deserved to win that year.. much better films in tropfest..

  • I guess you just have to be a radio host to fully understand this one

  • HAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAGAHAHAHAHA

  • I just pray to god kyle sandilands has seen this

  • this film is funny, sad, catchy. it has a true strong message. you can watch it over and over. and you still ask why this is the winner of the festival.

  • can any one explain me the significance of the reoccuring dice, I've only seen two of the films, and I don't know anything about the fistival

  • @DownTownPeople Each festival has a 'signature item' that must be incorporated into the film. It's intended to show that the film was made specifically for entry into that years festival.

  • ok im probably an idiot but i dont get it

  • that crying...is really bad...

  • Why the hell did this win?!?!

  • @EpicHatParty because its frikin brilliant

  • So, it is all fake and phony!

  • i like the song.. what's the name of it?

  • @drunkfenix shame on you

  • Dedicated to Kyle - I love it!

  • interesting...

did anyone notice the red dice on five that turns into a white cross?

anyways... the facade people wear, their outward appearance so far from the truth is represented quite well. it's easy to criticise others to deflect from ourselves (not sure that this relates but hey... words of wisdom XD)

  • What does this have to do with the description at all?!

  • that was awesome :)

  • made you look....

  • @TOMUCHLUX A biker. Duh. XD

  • @TOMUCHLUX i think its a car

  • you are all misinterpreting this! The reference to Kyle is that he is known as a "Shock Jockey", a disc jockey that uses outlandish and offensive material to create interest. The name 'shock' is just a double entendre between shock jockey and shell shock, hence the twist in emotion and disconnection from things around them

  • Comment removed

  • The moment they are off-air, the façade of lightheartedness collapses and reveals their pent-up sorrow. It's hard to pretend to be in high spirits when you are not. People whose job requires to wear such a mask are prone to depression.

  • Being somewhat familiar with that world, this one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life.

  • is there wtf button ..

  • im so fucking confused.

  • what was the cause of their agony?

  • Comment removed

  • Anna paquin is so pretty!

  • Sorry, but i don't get this. was it just that he called the guy "shit stick"????

  • What Up Funes gives it 3.5 Stars

  • ...Sorry, but what the fuck was that in the background at 1:38

  • @Zarsity It was some guy riding a bike. Lol i understand ur curiosity, i thought it was some alien that flew across when i watched it the second time LMAO xD

  • @MissCyndiMates Ohhhh, LOL good to know >_<''

  • Wazzzzaupppppp!

  • the punchline is the dedication.

  • why are there so many dislikes? is the level too high for the average?

  • dedicated to kyle sandilands...... thumbs up

  • This a great little flick. I did breakfast radio for a year and that is basically how I went to work every morning. Soul destroying, superficial, insincere and inane- that's radio. The money in no way compensates for the erosion of self. That's why I quit. And that's why those who remain commercial radio jocks become such morons. I've sent the link to friends in the radio biz and they cry with laughter at the poignant truth of this film.

  • Really, if you don't get this you should forfeit the right to vote. Because of the brain thing.

  • I love this so much it's not funny.

  • or is she

    Tyra Banks

  • God, you people, seriously. Tropfest isn't about getting topnotch quality cameras and complex storylines. They choose the winner on what the film's message is and HOW they tell it. Have you people not seen other Tropfest films? Like "Mankind is no Island"?

They were just words. On the streets. Filmed entirely by mobile phone. And it won. But it left its message. And it's impact. That's how you win Tropfest.

  • I like this video a lot I think with more guidance it has the potential to become a great full length,A radio host seems like one of the easiest job's to put on a happy face, might not be the whole truth as this video portrays but in comparison to the job's most people have have they really aren't the right to be this miserable or is it just a never ending search for happiness for all lol

  • Where is the comedy here? Winning in absence or what?

  • how did this win? lmao!

  • this was amazing. holy shit.

  • Wow, you people really judge a book by it's cover don't you. So literal. What this film is saying is basically that modern radio "breakfast shows" or even broader just todays "culture" is so base and elementary (e.g the line about horse semen or replace that with any stupid inane competition that you hear on breakfast radio these days) that these people hate their live so much that they have to do this thing called breakfast radio. They hate their life!

  • @gimme20dollars that is why he is crying (crying representing the human emotion for pain, fear, worry - also happiness but not in this instance) and why the co-host is upset.

I hadn't heard anything about this film and only watched it once and understood this. You people you should to watching kitten videos on here. Although like most film/art critics you have no idea what you're talking about so maybe you should keep at it...

And it's dedicated to Kyle because he epitomizes the "shock" jock

  • this is wrong..

  • who the fuck judged this? Helen Keller?

    RUBBISH!

  • @scottymactiles oi nah, fuck off eh!

  • @scottymactiles illchays, it's a comedy

  • @scottymactiles You obviously didn't get the idea the video was saying. A life where all you do everyday is talk about other peoples accomplishments and forced to act excited about it, when not much is happening in your life. This can make someone feel really............................................happy?

  • That. Was. Genius.

  • REALLY? Pretty sure I saw some better ones last year.

  • crap movie.... crap story line ... a cry baby movie....waist of my time

  • horse seamon??? what the fuck!?!?

  • stop dilikeing u idiots this u can call the carlie chaplin sindrome he has to be fun and act calm but there is no one to support him no one to wake up to noone to tell u to get out of the bathroom , no one watching u shave or something like that no kids nu real friends just one that are sicretly hating u thatțs just what happen to charlie chaplin

  • why was this a winner???

  • Is the overacting deliberate?

  • how did this win a comedy award?

  • lol

  • great short! I like everyone's interpretation but they the way I read it was that if you were a shock jock at some commercial station spouting bullshit all day and being forced to play the most annoying music in the world you'd want to kill yourself

  • Brilliant Video and I can see how it won. Thumbs up to you Abe!

  • Kyle maybe the punch line but the entire film is a metaphor for life in general. We all put our game face on all walks of life.

  • what was the theme/key item for this movie?

  • first time I watched this I didn't like it but than I watched it again 2 months later and now I love it

  • Brilliant - enjoyed this immensely.

  • i don't get it? someone explain??

  • @RocketSummergurl - Kyle Sandilands outrageous comments are a cover for his unhappy and sad life - he puts on a mask when he in on air to cover his sad life. I can assure you he was bullied at school.

  • @TheDecadant ohh ok thanks!

  • @TheDecadant That's not right at all, the point is it's a play on words, the name "Shock" comes from the term "Shock Jock which is usually directed towards disk jockeys(DJs) these people. The movie though is making it as shock as in the after effects of a traumatic experience. I guess that could be taken as his high spirits on air are a cover up, but then again, if you gave an indian "goodnight moon" he could interpret it as a bible.

  • @TheDecadant Although you are correct about the Kyle Sandilands reference

  • like yea......but its just kinda annoying

  • watch,dont fish and drive!

  • As an American, I can say that many of the more rececent Aussie Indie Pieces are quite refreshing, in a notably "un-Hollywood" fashion (Thank GOD!) ...

... This will help to expand the envelope of "global film psychology", for the better. It is a bit like dancing on a tightrope, eh? In a way, we need "formula" and "classical shot psychology" as a common ground, sothat, as viewers, we understand what to think and feel. ... To do that and, yet, to avaoid cliche' . ???

  • Half way though i was like. "WTF MAN this shouldn't win". But the ending brought me to tears (laughing)...

  • Let me just say technology has come a long long way

  • I get the message being put across, but this is by no means an award winning film.

  • @FRANKYMOOK but it is

  • Comment removed

  • @FRANKYMOOK I kind of agree with you on this one. it is a good idea though, but the acting didnt seem the best (im not one to talk though), but def not a award winning video. we never know though, this might have been the best one recieved.

  • this film makes me feel depressed; the music, the hardship of waking up from sleep to go to work, the lonely early morning drive, the blue atmosphere of early morning ...... i think this film is genius in its simplicity.

  • Being a shock-jock is just a job. They may be arseholes on air, but who knows what they're like in private.

  • This video represents Kyle Sandilands

The reason he cries all the time is because his life isn't perfect,

he misses all the small things, because the small things matter.

He has a lot of small personal things that make him sad in life.

An example is the bit where he sees the Father with his Daughter, this makes him smile, because they're a family, but then he realises he doesn't have a family.

On the inside he is shattered.

  • I dont really understand this... can someone please explain this?

  • im really sorry if i sound retarded here...

I do understand this video except when the guy with the curly hair starts raging... can someone explain that part to me? sorry!!

  • this isnt comedy

  • I do like it.

But the acting wasn't perfect, was rough.

  • great vid, deserving winner, who asked for my vote.

  • As an Aussie, I totally get the Kyle reference. This clip is about how looks can be deceiving- no one has a perfect life. The radio host may seem cheery and peppy on air, but he has a sad and miserable life off-air. Kyle usually sounds like he's enjoying himself on air, but in reality has had a lot of crap going on in his personal life. The moral of this is basically not to be judgmental of peoples appearances without getting to know them in depth. :)

  • @itsgabehhh well said

  • @itsgabehhh

I think its a joke man.

I don't really think you should think to much into it...

Not the pseudo-sophisticated filmcritic way you try to anyway.

  • @itsgabehhh Totally agree. I feel sad for how sometimes people are forced to put up an appearance when they are totally different inside.

  • @itsgabehhh dude you have helped me with my english essay! thank you so much!!!!! :)

  • @auvyx haha, no problem! i can't believe i have a top comment :D

  • @itsgabehhh lol everyone loves when their comment is top rated :)

  • @itsgabehhh oh!!! i get it now!! for the whole thing i was like what the fuck is going on i dont get it?!?!

    hahah

  • @itsgabehhh Oh please. Everyone hides their hard life behind a cheery outer. Not everyone is a disgusting, prejudice, arrogant barstard whilst doing it. Sometimes you have to limit the amount of empathy you can give someone. Some people are just cunts.

  • @Alkners lol sorry for having an opinion.

  • @Alkners wow..... .arent you a compassionate person!? grow up, mate, the whole world does not revolve around you and your lack of empathy for those who have it tough. maybe you should step away from the mirror just to see how much of a cunt you are and i hope you have learned your lesson from writing such an idiotic comment.

  • Very wierd~~~

  • @J0Jl yer thats a great way of looking at it thanks.

  • This is amazing!

  • Love it

  • Cwl

  • They have shitty jobs in Australia.

  • @JohnnyPSalinda

thank god its just the jobs, your country is shit in general

  • Jesus, can't you people go anywhere without making fools of yourselves?

  • I don't get it....

  • Didn't get it pointless boring waste of time

  • Hmmm. If it is a nod toward Sandilands, then I'm glad I didn't know who that was while watching it, as it elevated the subject matter beyond, "Look how messed up this guy is!" I thought it was more about our society's obsession with entertainment as a whole, but I guess not. Especially after reading the director's commentary on it, which was pretty disappointing.

  • as a kiwi id just like to say that 99% of aussies are good cunts

  • @arkim44 My two best friends are kiwi's :) Fucking love kiwis =] Pin=pen pen=pin. Cant get enough of that accent haha :) Fucking epic.

  • @arkim44 except Kyle Sandilands

  • @arkim44 and as an Aussie, I think that 99% of kiwis are good cints.

  • @TheGiantLeprechaun

    fair dinkum

  • All radio is horrible. Don't listen to the radio!

  • Terrible actor but other than that good video

  • oh, hey, Anna Paquin. Awesome!

  • No word back from fat newsreader what a efffing tool!!

  • I get it, Heroin is trendy again.

  • @pli26 no it's Pachelbel's Canon in D Major by Bach.

  • @vendingmachinelove wait no it's not. my iTunes lied to me.

  • i dont understand it

  • @fatnewsreader afraid to move forward??? You're a fucking yank your country is so obese it can't move at all.. Proved by the fact that your name is fat and also the only thing your movie producers can do is make fucking awesome British movies and shows into complete horse shit like the American office... I mean for fucks sake and you thinks Aussies are fucking impolite? Try this one out... Shut the fuck up PLEASE, Thank you!

  • Hey Guys, I really love this song....

Does anyone know the name of it?

    Thanks!!!

  • @siandonaghy agreed, great song, it's Canon (in D Major) by Pachelbel.

  • @siandonaghy123 Canon in D, Pachelbel

  • i finally get this took me a couple times its an ok film but not a first place winner but not as horrible as people making it out to be.. just my opinion

  • @AliciaJaneee Agreed.

  • its not havy. its kind of a parody of kyle sandilands' life

  • This short film is fucking WANK.

  • I seriously don't understand why people go all heavy over Tropfest films. Especially when they are intended to be simple crowd pleasers.

  • all i got this film to be is how fake we have to be to get through our lives...right? wrong? who cares because thats what i got from it

  • Isn't this song on the Zamels ad? or some other jewelery? Was expecting it to say... Diamonds are forever.. sorry your relationship is not in the guarantee but no.. umm he was crying bout being on a crappy radio station... livin up dude, u bring everybody else down.. and carry a hanky.. oh and don't cry drive "ull be sorry"

  • Maybe I need to smell Kyle Sandilands's faeces to understand just how shit that was. I see Tropfest has elected local popularity debates as its priority over good film making, which this was not.

Better move to Sydney & find out what irks ppl, so I can whin next year.

  • 1:10 - 1:14 made me lol

  • i get all of it. excpet for one last thing near the end the guys just screams...wtf ._.

  • guys...its about kyle sandilands!!!!

  • I got it.

  • Such incredible dimness displayed in these comments.

The film is a comment on living a hypocritical life. Being a media personality involves such a fabrication and falsity that you can't be happy with yourself. Unless you're an idiot or a psychopath Maybe everytime he cries, pretend he's not, but that he feels like crying inside. The crying is an overt manifestation of feeling that works in a short film to get a point across quickly ie his soul is tearing him apart because of his bullshit li

  • hah love it.. i hate my job too! yet i still turn up everyday..funny what people do for money

  • hah love it.. i hate my job too!

  • lol this was pretty shit

  • lol wtf. was this the only entry or something?

  • @peedeepooo no. it just has a point behind it

  • So recognize the music as canon rock, but I'm not sure who composes this version.. Pachelbel?

  • i couldnt help but laugh lol

  • this won? really? wow.

  • @liamrulzu1234 you also forgot Rose Byrne (Get Him to the Greek, Damages), Julian McMahon (Fantastic Four, Charmed, Nip/Tuck), Simon Baker (The Devil Wears Prada, The Mentalist), Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Eric Bana (Black Hawk Down, Munich, Funny People), Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck, Mass Effect video game), Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation, Avatar), Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Star Trek), Guy Pearce (Memento, The Hurt Locker), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, V for Vendetta, LOTR), and probably more!

  • hahah he cries like a stooge

  • Hmmm not very entertaining in my opinion.

  • Hahahaha, very clever

  • Comment removed

  • i liked it

  • This video sucks.

  • If you guys dont get it it, this a more or less a small doco on the history of surfing on the south coast of NSW

  • @TwoDogsX2 a thousand times like
