How do you know that Afghans will suffer if we leave? Because you're told that from the same people pushing an occupation of ideological values that most Canadians never would agree with. They tell us signs of rebuilding, but when they only had crappy huts, putting a couple more up isn't much of an effort. To state the most of our GDP doesn't exist without the US is an overstatement, however. In 2007 Canada exported about $320 billion in goods to the US AND imported about $250 billion in goods from the US. Also Canada is the United States largest supplier of oil (20% of total imports / 9% of total consumption) ... our stability as a supplier supports stability in your economy.

It would be difficult for Canada to replace these all of these exports. We'd have no problem finding countries (ie, in Asia and Europe) willing to buy oil and other commodities. However, what about the $250 billion dollars worth of goods Canadians buy from the United States? It would just as difficult for the US to replace this loss. And the loss of Canadian oil would force the US to rely on unstable, unfriendly suppliers (ie, Venezuela, Africa, Middle East). The relationship goes both ways.

Canada's external debt per capita is less than that of the United States and many other countries. Consequently, Canada is no more "broke" or "weak and poor" than many other industrialized countries (including the US).
