during the beginning draw bridge sequenence..when you see the tentacles press Sword and then go up. The next scene should be the room with the crumbing ceiling. Wait for Dirk to shield his face away from the rubble and press RIGHT to exit the door.
Let me help you here. I own and have beaten the Sega CD version on headphones alone.
during this drawbridge scene, your supposed to press UP the moment the tentacle eyes appear onscreen. This scene was original cut but remained locked on the true laserdisc game.
@jasondracd Hey dude, I just got this game on sega cd, and I'm just as bad as this guy. Is there anyway you could help me out with the controls and game play. I'd be in debt to you forever lol. Really though can you please help. Thanks.
The original is a movie with timed events, that was the whole point to begin with. It was 1983 man. Back in the day was way cool.(And to me still is).
The NES game is hilarious in my opinion, the SNES game is rather disappointing, the Sega CD version is pretty good once you figure out what to do, but my favourite game so far is the DVD version.
Did you try swinging your sword when you fall through the hole in the Sega CD version? You're supposed to press the 'action' button to swing your sword. That's all. Least, that's how it works on the DS version on both difficulty levels.
The title screen and music was very very cool, but I agree. And I like to know if you played that shit... It was the most frustrating video game ever.
Sega CD is based on the Arcade version, but from what I noticed there is no yellow indicator to tell you when to push a button, so that is the only beef anyone can have with it, unless you say delayed controls or whatnot, maybe even making fun of the story would be okay.
I don't think the SNES version of Dragon's Lair is that bad of a game despite it being hard at times but the rest all just god awful (arcade version excluded).

I've got the Sega CD version, even though I HAVE died on the first screen (a.k.a The Drawbridge), I'm smart enough to know that this was the earliest game that actually tried to be as close to the arcade version as possible. The only problem I find is that sometimes the controls are delayed at some points, either that or the time you need to press it is different from the arcade. That said, I just think you're whining over nothing.
I beat the game fine on Sega CD and on DOS DVD it's a direct port of the Arcade version, which they use to have in FunLand in Long Beach WA. Are you running it on emulator or somthing? You said keyboard... Mmm...
The sega cd and the dos cd rom version of this game are both very good and fairly faithful to the original. You just don't know how to play. You're not hitting the right button at the right time.
I played the PC-CD version (which is identical to the Sega CD one) and completed it (with a lot of patience and spare time, though). On the bridge screen, it's just using the sword when those eyed tentacles approach, then up when they kneel, and the level is completed. It's the easiest of the levels (You should check out the final level, that IS the meaning of difficult).
Maybe you should play Space ace? At least in Space ace, sometimes your givin hints on what button to press, although at other times you have to try and figure it out.
Also, try not to button mash, because that'll just get yourself killed.
I'm not sure if Space ace is anything like Dragon's lair, but I though SA was great fun, and would love to try Dragons lair.
Also, to dawg098, he kind of sounds german to me.
Excellent review. I myself have never played Dragon's Lair, and judging by the clips shown, I dont much care to now. Thanks for saving me time and money. Props.
Interesting review, but I can say that it made me laugh when you kept on getting pulled under by the purple snakes at the bride. I really don't know why though.
I suppose maybe you had to "be there" but the Sega CD/Mega CD version is at least faithful to the arcade game. The Amstrad version is a port of the Coleco translation from '84 or '85 I'm sure, due to the are I'll give it a bit of a pass, and the NES and SNES versions are just side scrolling bastardizations.
Seriously tho, the Arcade/Sega CD/any original type version of DL isn't that hard. Look up a FAQ and it'll give you all the button presses, and you just time them right. Try it sometime.
ok....really...Dude...you need some sort of expression with your voice....Please o more talking in your videos, no offense but i just about fell asleep trying to watch it,....

yo bpbrother why don't you review the original Dragon's Lair laserdisc game? And stop acting like the angry video game nerd, at least he does what he knows best: reviewing his own games. Not like you: random whinning about games that you don't even own.

I really dont think this guy was right about the segaCD one becuse it was probably a good arcade port.I have never played the segaCD one but I think it was good
The timing is just a little different, but I guarantee you, if you get it right you can beat the Sega CD version. I own the Sega CD version, and I remember I beat it. I even use to pwn the Sullivan Bluth variations (Escape From Singe's Castle on Amiga and PC and Curse of Mordread on PC) from the age of 5 and got bored once and replayed them blindfolded about 5 years later to mix it up (and beat it of course).
Don't be rude to others, just cause their opinions don't match yours. It's childish to call people names and descriminate which is what you are doing!
I'm not American, I didn't make any negative comments, and I can tell he's not French.
I like and don't like Dragon's Lair (the FMV version) because of one thing: It doesn't tell you what to do, which is annoying... but it tests your skill of making snap decisions, and common sense, what would you do if that monster under the bridge was trying to get you? Frighten it with your sword, and climb up, then run towards the door! DUH!
as to the 'buttons not responding' thing, once a button is pressed for an 'action' all other presses are ignored until the next 'action'. At least the arcade would gives you a visual clue early on, this version does not!!
Gotta take a point there. Dragons Liar rules as a wicked animation, but the controls are just freaky. I guess all game testers defined the word playability as an own checkbox after this one.
if your playing an emulated version of Dragon's Lair for the Sega Cd on your computer it makes perfect sense why the controls wouldn't work. The Sega Cd version is a port of the laserdisk version and for it's time it was pretty awesome. those other platforms tried to make games based on the laserdisk version and failed miserably. the original dragon's lair was meant to be like a movie. that was the whole concept.
ok, i can agree that yeah, the other versions are pretty bad, except for the Sega CD one, so please, don't diss it because it's just trying to immitate the DVD or Laserdisk versions.
OMFG. Okay I can sympathize with the platform versions of the game, but the SEGA CD version and all other versions like it from the original LaserDisc to the Amiga versions, PC CD-ROM, DVD and now HD DVD and Blu-Ray versions, I have finished it Blindfolded... Yeah. BLINDFOLDED.
Dragon's Lair was a fave game of mine as an arcade machine in the 80's. And I owned an Amstrad with the Amstrad conversion of it.
You are absolutely correct about the gameplay on the Amstrad. I think that's one of the games that wound up having its casette tape thrown across the room in a fit of rage. That's the other thing you don't get with emulation: A 5-15 minute loading time.
This review rocks, man. Your commentary is fucking hilarious. No offense, but it sounds like a cross between William Hung and Arnold Schwartznegger narrating this film. Where are you from?
I agree with what some others have said... you're criticizing games for how badly their emulator roms play. I've never played all the ones you reviewed here; but I used to own the SegaCD one, and had no problems with the controls; in fact I quite enjoyed this game.
Also, do some research. This game was originally released as an arcade game, based off of a laserdisc. This allowed for much higher quality video than even what was on the SegaCD.
How can you even do a review on a game when you don't even know anything about the system it is on. The Amstrad CPC was an 8 bit pc originally released in 1984.
Watch some real videos based on the laserdisc game.
Watch closely, I did not bash the systems themselves, it's the game. I didn't knew of the Arcade version back then, you're right there. But that ashames these games even more if you ask me. Anyway, thanks for backfeeding.
I realize you weren't bashing the systems. I just noticed some misinformation, and lack of research. And controls on an emulator are not necessarily indicative of true gameplay.
I hate the fact that you are giving bad reviews partially based on unresponsive controls when you are using an emulator. An emulator often is not accurate enough for reviews. There is often a lag time for controls, or bugs in the roms. Even if there aren't those problems, there is a massive difference between playing on a keyboard, or computer gamepad and playing on the controller the programmers had in mind for their controls when creating the game.
About the Sega CD one, there are no problems or anything, nothing wrong with the emulator. It's just that they made the timing in the game PERFECT. If you don't press the right button at the exact time, you die. Unlike other version like the gameboy color one, where you can press the button early and it will except it. That's why the sega cd one is so damn hard.
It was great to see one of the reviewers I like cover an Amstrad game. Yeah those green things do look like kangaroos hehe. The Amstrad by the way is an old computer like the Commodore 64 or Sinclair Spectrum.
This is strange the guy who did the reviews, looks like he never played the arcade original, the sega cd version is a conversion of that, you only either choose a direction or press the fire button. Thats all but thats what you do on the arcade version.
by the way..i noticed if u try this on an emulator , some kind on lag in the controls make this game a little frustrating..its that ur problem playing this???
then i can see in the movie, u can figure out waths next!! the tentacules sucked the characters all the time!! so to make this movie continue, wich action the character gotta do? ...maybe... climb up?? yes!! an thats it!! just press up once..and just once. or u crew it with too much indications, thast all!! this game its not bad..its just an interactive moviewith no indications because its suposed u must figured them.
like u said bpbrother sega cd/mega cd DRAGON'S LAIRthis is like movie..so u just need to press the buttoms according with the action the character needs to make the movie continue. by example... in the beggining secuence when the character falls and the tnetacules coming up, just press sowrd(buttom b) once, and the character can defend himself...
lol.. bpbrother like u said Sega cd/ Mega cd Dragon's Lair is a different concept, like a movie. Well thtas is right!, so to play this game all u wanna need.. its think that.. wich action this character need to do to make the movie continue?? and thats it!! example: in the first secuence when the bridge broke and the charcter falls, then the tentacules coming press sword (b buttom) once!! so the character can defend himself....
The Sega CD version of it is just a grainy version of the original real version. Also, no, you just sucked, the bridge is the easist thing in the world to get through on even a child's first play. It was and is a playable movie that took arcades by storm in the 80's. If you don't like it, fine, but don't crit on stuff just because you suck at it.
the border between being good or bad at a game may not be determined by barely working controls - I sure sucked but if you can't beat the first sequence within 20 minutes (I seriously tried before making video footage). I assumeyou played the game and find it fairly easy, well... I don't think so. Nevertheless I'm sure that these games also have their consumers and legal existance
Some day if I ever manage to beat it I might add a new video :)
Just one thing I've noticed - all the games have the character walking, moving like a MORON. The developers are fucking idiots. Fuck the whole franchise.
Dude, not everyone speaks perfect English so you got to think about that before you bust someone on their accent. Its just fucked up to comment on his video to say THAT! He did a damn fine job commenting on the video. Plus, I like the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

DUH!
Feefle 4 years ago
as to the 'buttons not responding' thing, once a button is pressed for an 'action' all other presses are ignored until the next 'action'.

The Sega Cd version is a port of the laserdisk version and for it's time it was pretty awesome. those other platforms tried to make games based on the laserdisk version and failed miserably. the original dragon's lair was meant to be like a movie. that was the whole concept.
tedbroken 4 years ago
ok, i can agree that yeah, the other versions are pretty bad, except for the Sega CD one, so please, don't diss it because it's just trying to immitate the DVD or Laserdisk versions.

I agree I still Have The Sega CD Version of Dragon's Lair. The Games Video Quality is Better Than Power Rangers or Bram Stokers Dracula For Sega CD

That's the other thing you don't get with emulation: A 5-15 minute loading time.
billamu 4 years ago
This review rocks, man. Your commentary is fucking hilarious. No offense, but it sounds like a cross between William Hung and Arnold Schwartznegger narrating this film. Where are you from?
Keep up the good work.

I agree with what some others have said... you're criticizing games for how badly their emulator roms play. I've never played all the ones you reviewed here; but I used to own the SegaCD one, and had no problems with the controls; in fact I quite enjoyed this game.
WernerOfConquer 4 years ago
Also, do some research. This game was originally released as an arcade game, based off of a laserdisc. This allowed for much higher quality video than even what was on the SegaCD.
How can you even do a review on a game when you don't even know anything about the system it is on. The Amstrad CPC was an 8 bit pc originally released in 1984.
Watch some real videos based on the laserdisc game.
freakshow54 4 years ago
Watch closely, I did not bash the systems themselves, it's the game. I didn't knew of the Arcade version back then, you're right there. But that ashames these games even more if you ask me. Anyway, thanks for backfeeding.
bpbrother 4 years ago
I realize you weren't bashing the systems. I just noticed some misinformation, and lack of research. And controls on an emulator are not necessarily indicative of true gameplay.
freakshow54 4 years ago
I hate the fact that you are giving bad reviews partially based on unresponsive controls when you are using an emulator. An emulator often is not accurate enough for reviews. There is often a lag time for controls, or bugs in the roms. Even if there aren't those problems, there is a massive difference between playing on a keyboard, or computer gamepad and playing on the controller the programmers had in mind for their controls when creating the game.
freakshow54 4 years ago
I've heard several opinions and hints now on that control problem with the CD Version. Maybe I should give it a retry in the near future.
bpbrother 4 years ago
About the Sega CD one, there are no problems or anything, nothing wrong with the emulator. It's just that they made the timing in the game PERFECT. If you don't press the right button at the exact time, you die. Unlike other version like the gameboy color one, where you can press the button early and it will except it. That's why the sega cd one is so damn hard.
leon102 4 years ago
It was great to see one of the reviewers I like cover an Amstrad game. Yeah those green things do look like kangaroos hehe. The Amstrad by the way is an old computer like the Commodore 64 or Sinclair Spectrum.
Dentolux 4 years ago
Emulator lag that's totally random.
Means sometimes you'll get it right, and sometimes you'll never win. This is why you have save states!

is this dude in group x? lolz
thecitylightsbloom 4 years ago
This is strange the guy who did the reviews, looks like he never played the arcade original, the sega cd version is a conversion of that, you only either choose a direction or press the fire button. Thats all but thats what you do on the arcade version.
squirm13 4 years ago
the sega cd version is the closet version to the arcade of this 3
carlitoparadise 4 years ago
Wow I love this video. There is no way I would have watched that entire video unless you had the great commentary. Good job.
DarakuTenshi 4 years ago
by the way..i noticed if u try this on an emulator , some kind on lag in the controls make this game a little frustrating..its that ur problem playing this???
BIMBOBOOP 4 years ago
then i can see in the movie, u can figure out waths next!! the tentacules sucked the characters all the time!! so to make this movie continue, wich action the character gotta do? ...maybe... climb up?? yes!! an thats it!! just press up once..and just once. or u crew it with too much indications, thast all!! this game its not bad..its just an interactive moviewith no indications because its suposed u must figured them.
BIMBOBOOP 4 years ago
like u said bpbrother sega cd/mega cd DRAGON'S LAIRthis is like movie..so u just need to press the buttoms according with the action the character needs to make the movie continue. by example... in the beggining secuence when the character falls and the tnetacules coming up, just press sowrd(buttom b) once, and the character can defend himself...
BIMBOBOOP 4 years ago
lol.. bpbrother like u said Sega cd/ Mega cd Dragon's Lair is a different concept, like a movie.
BIMBOBOOP 4 years ago
The Sega CD version of it is just a grainy version of the original real version. Also, no, you just sucked, the bridge is the easist thing in the world to get through on even a child's first play. It was and is a playable movie that took arcades by storm in the 80's. If you don't like it, fine, but don't crit on stuff just because you suck at it.
optimusjd 4 years ago
the border between being good or bad at a game may not be determined by barely working controls - I sure sucked but if you can't beat the first sequence within 20 minutes (I seriously tried before making video footage). I assumeyou played the game and find it fairly easy, well... I don't think so. Nevertheless I'm sure that these games also have their consumers and legal existance
Some day if I ever manage to beat it I might add a new video :)
bpbrother 4 years ago
Just one thing I've noticed - all the games have the character walking, moving like a MORON. The developers are fucking idiots. Fuck the whole franchise.

Dude, not everyone speaks perfect English so you got to think about that before you bust someone on their accent. Its just fucked up to comment on his video to say THAT! He did a damn fine job commenting on the video. Plus, I like the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
