This is one of the greatest songs. That being said it holds many meanings. It could just be about society and having a true friend. It could be about foster children who've been through the wringer in search of that one family that loves them. It could be about someone who's been used by lovers in the past and can finally find real love in someone able to accept them for all their faults, forget the past, and forge a brand new future. For me it's more the latter, but any way it's beautiful!

For me...this song represents being lost and found, and handed down from family member to family member, then in multiple foster homes. My daughter and I are both adopted. We felt unworthy of a real, deep, familial, kind of love. I found my forever family @ 8 yo. She found us @ 14. We are healing...together with the support of our amazing family, and the undeserved kindness of our heavenly father. Thank You Mr. Thomas for generously expressing yourself. Been listening to MB20 since before they were MB20 (Tabitha's Secret) and their music really relates to so many people on so many levels. I turned to their music as MB20 when i was in a really crappy marriage. 3am and Push really hit home for me. But, I am no longer a hand me down because I found my hand up and he is wonderful. Thank you, MB20, for helping me through difficult times! Rob Thomas is a sexy beast and I got the pleasure of seeing them in the Yourself or Someone Like You tour.

Often takes place in large poor families when the younger children are made to wear the older children's "hand me downs"-- The song seems to connect with those who feel they were never treated like they were truly special-- the line "no one's tried to give you what you need" seems to perfectly express the connection.

@Lexylicious007 Yeah all of my clothing and toys and Halloween costumes were "hand me downs" for my little brother if they were unisex or for my younger female cousins. The imagery of the person being sung to in this song being a "hand me down" implies other people didn't need to hold onto him or her (I'm assuming her? although I don't know that the song has to be romantic). The way they might outgrow clothing, they were finished with her as a lover or something and had no use for her anymore.

Omg. From when i was in my moms belly till my age now, My mom always made me listen to MatchBox Twenty and this band,Their songs. Is so.....Amazing. This song was never big and nor was Matchbox 20 to be honest, fairly unknown to many. You can't just compliment Rob, MB20 are a band and this song couldn't have been any better without them.

Song that always scared me, for some reason. It's interesting because Rob tends to be very neutral with his voice, and their music, whilst lyrically emotive, tends not to follow the same raw emotion displayed in the lyrics.

This song, however, seems to be sung to one person, one person alone. It's full of raw emotion, his voice cracks and he seems to get angry and sad and frustrated and hurt and it's all so much to take in from an artist who is usually so neutral.

That said, I love it.
