  • the steering wheel on that ferrari looks epic and so does the car

  • This is one of the most awesome footages ever! WOW!

  • Wow, how can these cars be 10 seconds slower then nowadays, 10 whole seconds..wtf

  • @wimpiedimpie Simple = Downforce + 10 years of engine development.

  • Been a while since I've heard Ben Edwards and John Watson commentate on F1..

  • These good old times...i miss them. F1 nowadays is nothing anymore compared with the 94 and 95 season.

  • Great pilot...he did a magnificent 4th place on grid and a great podium the day after...Ferrari was rubbish at that time, specially if compared to williams and benetton...anyway he also did something astonishing at casino doing that slide!!

  • Holy crap was epic coming out of Casino

  • As John Watson said - glorious! Fabulous car, great driver and final qualifying at Monaco - always the best part of the weekend. Props to Eurosport too. They covered qually long before BBC or ITV did. Great commentary team too with Wattie alongside Ben Edwards. Times have changed though. David Coulthard would probably criticise Gerhard for sliding the car and losing time plus doing his tyres in!

  • Good lord, now THATs how you make an understeering car work for you!

  • @arena2101 Rofl you even know what understeering is? The only thing that ferrari did was oversteering lol...

  • If that lap was a parsnip, I would be a good parsnip.

  • Great lap, good work!

But it's unbelievable, tha nowadays F1 is more than 10 sec faster (on the changed Monaco track (maybe 2 sec)).

  • That was a motherfucker of a lap. I always knew Berger was good, but this takes the cake.

  • F1 powerslides. So epic.

  • That was the glorietime of F1....

  • Ferrari V12....it's the Sound of God.....

  • i miss those differences, today its sooooo boooring ,drivers are like girl models, f1 cars are slower, and there is no michael schumacher and mika hakkinen :((((((

  • @Proxo20 Really slower?? In Topspeed maybe... But yes, it is very boring.

  • 1:52 - O.O

  • I wish John Watson would shut up so we could hear the car.

  • I love how the commentators are just beside themselves! I love the slides! Great to see Gerhard having so much fun - now there was a driver who should have won Monaco and a championship :(

  • great car control in 1:54

  • a all time ledgend

  • That's how you drive a formula 1 car.

  • The 1995 Ferrari was the only car that was lovely to look at that season.

  • 1:52 i bet he nearly pooped his pants

  • I say we tear up the rulebook and reset to 1986.

  • @Ferrariman601 That depends. How many drivers can we reset to 1986? Can you imagine Senna and Berger and Prost and Piquet (Sr) vs Webber and Alonso and Hamilton and Vettel? (LOL Vettel and Hamilton would get schooled and it would be fantastic)

  • @walover165

Vettel, Hamilton, Webber... Better than any driver from the 80s. Lap data mapping and simulator testing have brought modern drivers to a completely new level.

Innate skill? Hakkinen, Schumi, Prost, Stewart, Fangio, Brabham, Clark, Senna, Villeneuve sr, Villeneuve jr, and Ascari. Compared to their contemps, all mind-blowing. I would NOT be surprised if Vettel ends up earning a spot on that little list.

What I'm saying is... don't knock modern drivers. Just wait ten years and see.

  • Look at the Steering wheel. He is not pushing any buttons, he is simply driving. Today they have many many buttons they even push them in the corner.

Earlier: Step into the car and drive

Today: step into the car, drive change this, change that, push this push that.

I think would like to have a steering wheel like in this Video, an not like a gamecontroller

    Only my opinion

  • A gstandener Tiroler Naturbursch! Holdrio!

  • @hamiltonfan4eva

    Oh c'mon.

I just said that, because the biggest rivalry in F1 is between Ferrari and McLaren.

And if somebody thumbs down this vid he couldn't have an objectively opinion.

    That's nothing against McLaren fans.

  • The 94-96 and 07-08 Marlboro livery on the ferraris where best in my opinion

  • something to think about...

1995 berger time's is only 9 seconds slower than 2011 pole and without all the insane electroni aids they have today!

  • @azidahaka2 - What electronic aids?? Electronic aids have been banned for 5 years for god's sake. No traction control, no launch control, no automatic gears. Wake up.

  • @Anime998877

yeah wake up! :D you think nowadays there's no electronic control in our 2011 F1 championship?

  • @azidahaka2 - No there isn't.

  • @azidahaka2 no electronic aids, man. the faster times are down to the aero(more downforce, less drag) better chassis and suspension, thus more grip and speed through the corners. no launch control, no active suspension, no traction control. F1 drivers were, and always will be, very fast. no use comparing different drivers of different eras. If sebastian vettel had driven in f1 back then, no doubt he would have posted roughly similiar times to gerhard.

  • 1 Person is a McLaren-fan !!!

  • @QuickRobbe2009 what have you got against Mclaren fans? I am one

    and I liked this vid

  • this is not the faster way of driving an f1 car I think...spectacular though

  • OMFG 1:52 !!!!!

  • er war zu seiner besten zeit ,sicher der wildeste hund in der f1..

    und einer der schnellsten sowieso..!

  • Lol when i watched this, i had no idea who John Watson was. I'm glad i took a look into history.

  • I remember the race after Mr. Berger's father died, and Gerhard went out and put the smack down on his competitors... It brought tears to my eyes!!!

  • @moto1p1 Schumacher did the same the day his mother died..

  • I remember this Ferrari had randomly detachable on-board cameras. :P

  • Wonderful to look at, he's just drifting the car around the corners.

    What skill!

  • 1:52 great car control

  • He is playing with oversteer, with oversteer it´s true you have an uncontroled car, but you go away of the curve so fast, you only need a good hands and intelligence to know how to control it and where to use it correctly, pretty amazing by Berger.

  • The quintessential F1 car at the quintessential F1 circuit

  • 1:53 - OH... MY... LORD

  • 0:27 ????...... thumb

  • Great times - I miss it. Two legends are missing today, the V12 and Gerhard Berger!

  • @M3POWERVIDEOS , you're not the only one who misses Gerhard Berger.

Great austrian driver like him, Niki Lauda, Jochen Rindt, etc. don't exist anymore.

The new austrian like Christian Klien suck. >.<

  • O M F G

    O___O

  • Wow, I imagine his suit must be specially modified to contain balls of such magnitude.

  • Every time I watch this I am simply amazed! lets get rid of the sculptured CAD marvels that the cars have become, whack the big capacity engines back in, wider track, take away the downforce and lets go racing.

  • @r66chs They tried taking downforce away in 2009 but they failed...

  • pure real car control, those were the best times in f1,the v12 times

  • How the hell in gods name could you dislike this? Gerhard always loved Monaco. This was just a racing driver enjoying himself.

  • never gonna see things like this again. at least we have youtube

  • thx for uploding this

  • lol. im pretty sure he didnt want his car to do this...no way you do a deliberate 4 wheel slide in monaco. amazing handling though.

  • Although the over-steering is interesting to watch, it does make the car slower exiting corner as traction is reduced. Don't get me wrong, drifting certainly does not lack bravery on the driver's side, but I think it's nicer to see cars go faster around corners.

  • This is the type of Formula 1 we need more of. wider tyres, smaller wings, more mechanical grip, less aerodynamics. Formula 1 cars need to become again big go-karts with some bodywork instead of the highly contrived marvels they are now. By the way, I always had thought of Gerhard Berger as a lame duck. until I saw THIS.

  • @TheColinChapman as far as i've read, exactly this is coming back next season. aerodynamics cut down, more mechanical grip. the cars are gonna look like in prost/senna times.

  • @kralle7611 yes, basically. The diffusers will be cut down, that's good. But I dislike the idea of the rear wing flaps being adjustable from the cockpit. If it was possible to simply reduce the 'visible' wings (front- and rear wing) to the size of 1980-1982 (which means: the era of the ground effect cars, only w/o the ground effect sidepods now), that would be a good approach in my mind. minimum front wing, minumum rear wing, no curved underbody. btw, thanks for replying! :-))

  • One of the best video of the '90s era! Those were the best days of F1. The days when F1 pilots had big balls and F1 singleseaters were beautiful!

  • What a brilliant moment. I wonder if Gerhard Berger ever dreams about that lap.

  • casino square used to be such a good place for f1 cars to slide, also look at videos of Rosberg here in 1983, thats also quite stunning

  • Yuji Ide don't like this video

  • This is how F1 should be! Yet more ridiculous rules with wings for next year - all these stupid gadgets will simply demean a genuine overtaking manoeuvre...

  • That slide out of casino-corner in his 2nd lap is just stunning.

i never saw such a slide in an f1 car before, i couldnt remember that one.

just glorious! that is the way a f1 car should be driven, not that bullsh*t nowadays.

  • @Speedy00 Well It's tough for todays car to slide like this bcos theres so much downforce being created and theres so much new technology in the suspension and tires that they are so sticky to the surface.

  • @jraybay Yeah i know, but f1 just sucks nowadays...

look at that beautiul cars back in the 90's. Sound of v12, just awesome.

the cars of today sound like a hoover vacuumcleaner, and it's all about tactics, nothing goin on on the track, but the cars doing their laps. no overtaking, no action... i miss the old f1

  • @Speedy00 Well I wouldnt go that far, formula 1 was for sure alot better when that cars were less advanced and had less aero and Mechanical grip but gobs of power. The cars of today sound great actually I dont know if you've been to a race recently? They are still loud and they are still very recognizable revving at 18000 rpm... Yes no refueling is a shame but think of Lewis Hamilton, fernando alonso, Kamui kobayashi, Robert Kubica, Vettel etc before you say " no overtaking" " no action"

  • :O Now I saw all in the F1!!!

Btw, Gerhard was a close friend of the God Ayrton Senna. Berger helped a lot Bruno Senna career to get him in the F1. Ok Bruno its not Ayrton. But I miss a lot see some Senna in the 1º place :$ :$

  • Iron balls, the real F1

  • He was one of the last real men in Formula 1

  • Gerhard Berger is so underrated. This driving style is just so awesome!

  • good comentry team

  • The fast and the furious: Monaco drift :D

  • @Kashikoku ah ah that would be a good movie xD

  • The 1 dislike is either a mistake or a NASCRAP fan.

  • wow

  • Holy Guacamole!!!

  • 0:22 this ferrari wheel are very similar with actual RBR wheel

  • i was there in 95

  • I miss that car and that driver :(

  • Thanks for posting this! I remember watching this live in 1995, and eagerly awaiting the review of the year video so I could see it again, but it wasn't on there. So I only had to wait 15 years.........

  • Today´s F1´s are going around this track in 1m 13 sec,that´s more than 11 secs faster than in 1995!Amazing! I mean don´t get me wrong I love those 1980-1990´s F1 era´s much more than today´s F1 but I was just stating a fact!

  • @Playster3: Look at the track layout back then! Todays layout alone is so much faster through Swimmingpool and Rascasse.

  • Fantastic footage!! Berger was ace and that was one of the most beautiful F1 Ferraris ever!

God I like vintage F1 sutt!!

  • John Watson sounds like the most passionate commentator I've heard since Murray Walker. It's clear John just loves F1 so much.

  • Brillant !

  • bring on the 1.5 liter 4 cylinder twin turbo engines, NOT

  • 1:53 FOR SERIOUS AMOUNTS OF CASH

  • berger just went up in my estimations 100%

  • 1:52 great control - Gerhard had so much fun as u can see.

    V8, V10, V12 - magic years of F1

  • Berger + Ferrari = Inolvidable

  • When cars were cars. men were men, and drivers were drivers!

  • one of the best no-world champion ever and one of the coolest and most charismatic guys in F1 ever. Thanks for this vid-i love it

  • Yeah the ferraris were quite some horses to tame back in the days... as all real formulas were.

  • F1 cars today could do with more torque, less downforce and wider tires. Slightly wider track would probably be better too. Ah, let's just play those 80s/early 90s tapes and pretend it is F1 today.

  • @adubiosum F1 could do with cost reduction to be honest. That's what is making racing suck these days. The depression in America and its just really honking expensive to race.

  • @adubiosum i deff agree with you on the big tires , mostly the front for turn in !. the wide track's look great but very hard to pass on tight circuits .... the only place i disagree is with the downforce .

i think they should have un restricted aero's as long as nothing is adjustable on the fly . active suspension can be banned , that did nothing for viewers in my eyes .... and of course h pattern should be mandatory !!

    cheers

  • @adubiosum

Agree! However, I hate when people claim modern F1 is boring and the “old days” where the “real F1” etc. That’s nostalgia talking rubbish!

We just had six very close exciting seasons 2005-2010, and the gap that determents if you’re in or out, are much smaller than 20+ years ago!

But it could be even better with more torque, better looking cars with more mechanical grip, and please get rid of that ultra narrow rear wing design they are running now…that looks so stupid!

  • A bit more power and torque than grip, that's what we need in F1 today.

  • Screaming fast 412 T2 paired with a fast driver like Berger = wicked 4 wheel 600bhp drift/slide cornering sickness! Without a doubt, this is Jedi F1 driver in action!

  • Thankyou so much for this, I have been looking for this clip for years... remember watching this live. That second pass through Casino Square is awesome.

  • Talk about driving on the edge. . .At Monaco of all places. . .surrounded by armco barriers. . .

  • @ 1:53 they were drivers indeed!!!

  • V12. The proud of Ferrari.

  • Berger was an extremely quick driver with impressive car control...one of the very best

  • thats driving

  • 1995 Ferrari was fantastic - one of my favorite F1 cars ever (along with 641/2). And this fantastic V12 engine, it´s pity that F1 cars can´t sound like that nowadays...This car was very competitive and the handling was very good - but the problem was reliability. I remember Alesi doing well in many races - but he usually suffered technical problems

  • @jiricekk86

Oh he mean it realy serious, he was bombs away about the power and driviblity of the engine and the car too!

Schumacher was a bit disapoitend that 1996 he can't drive the V12, but a V10 need less gasoline... and that was the real weaknes of the formidable engine

  • awesome driving by him

  • I remember that Schumacher tested this Ferrari before he becomes the new One 1996. And he ask the Engineer and Directors why they don't have won the Championship whit this great Car and great Engine!!! He was enthusiastic about the power of the V12...

  • Why not?He just forgot that this Ferrari was badly unreliable...just ask Alesi

  • @AlejjSi

Alesi & Berger hasn't can't drive the Benetton of 1996 too, so the car was only a evolution of the '95 and Schumacher won some GP with this car and that was more difficult to drive for some other...1995 was enthusiastic about the 95 Ferrari!!

  • @VinGee33

But I am not talking about handling of the Ferrari...berger and Alesi were saying its great ti handle, just the reliability wasnt simply there(or inteligence, how could Berger run out of fuel just before pitstop and Alesi just after finish lane at Canada?)

  • THAT is exciting to watch, not the boring crap they broadcast these days... I mean don't all the rules spoil a bit of the fun?

  • He drives the most beautifull F1 car ever like a kart :-) Really great to see! V12 is missed badly in F1!

  • Awesome car control by Berger there. I really wish the FIA would get a grip and give us the V12 back someday.

  • Comment removed

  • Gerhard Berger always the most spectacular to watch! A sorely missed character too!

  • Great car control by the former GP winner.

  • mallamoozoo - this is exactly what the viewer wants. I understand what hes saying.

  • Look at the powerslide at Casino square.

  • Err - it's called race-driving - the goal is to be permanently on the brink of almost crashing...but not! Senna once said being on the limit is not knowing until after you've made it through whether or not you will !!!!

  • What a pretty powerslide. Glorious. What everyone wants to see, especially at Monaco. Berger was great at this.

  • yes but as Watson says it is reminiscent of 70s era cars - in other words - very poor levels of mechanical grip. And you can see by the in-car video he is battling severe oversteer everywhere - Looks spectacular but not what you want.

  • Indeed malla My Friend: "looking fast", doesn't mean that "you're being fast". Example: being an "oversteering driver", Rosberg managed to be fast in Monaco, as long as his car allowed him to be fast. But what I see here is a car that doesn't work at all (bad machine, bad set up, bad tyres, whatever the reason was). Berger oversteering here is spectacular to see, but seems to be a driver fighting against his machine, rather than figthing for pole. Excellent car control anyway, no doubt.......

  • Excellent point luciano - you understand well that there are 2 elements involved - the set up of the car and the driver's use of it. Indeed- berger was doing a good job here to battle with a poor handling car. (But the really interesting question is: Was it handling badly because the drivers couldn't set up properly- or was it a very poor car design beyond ANY driver's ability to set up? )

Thats actually a difficult question to answer- but i suspect Berger and Alesi didnt have a clue on set up!

  • Yeah DocBrewster buddy: Alesi and Berger were not the kind of drivers with that rare skill called "tester or developement" skillful drivers. Some of the following guys had: Senna, Prost, Lauda, Reutemann, Jabouille, Stewart, Piquet, even Schuey!!! But Alesi or Berger, skilled as they were, "tester" conditions were almost an uncertain or unknown matter......

  • Yes but he didn't! surely that prooves his skill?

  • He is a great driver!

  • Remember watching this! Amazing car control from Berger! and beautiful sounding V12 Ferrari!

  • Great Control of Gerhard, Looks at Awesome Driving!!!

  • fuckin' great!

  • King of the car that wasn't.

  • I don't even know what i wrote there earlier. I'm really confused.

    Anyways, go Gerhard.

  • Gerhard...always far too human and fun loving for 'modern' F1....you should have been racing in the '50s, '60s or '70s. Or, like Jack Brabham, all three:)

  • This guy has some huge balls 0.o

  • His ballsy move got him on the podium here while teammate Alesi crashed! A great driver. F1 has never been the same without him.

  • I have been looking for this for ages, I remember watching this with delight. One of the greatest looking and best sounding F1 cars ever - driven to please the crowds. Thanks for posting

  • Fantastic car control in a fantastic car, awesome. Let me feel the weight of 'em Gerhard!! lol :o))

  • Pure class, I'm sure if you look closely enough, you can see Gerhards balls hanging out the side of the cockpit.......... : )

If Murray Walker had been commentating, I think he would have spontaneously combusted !!!

  • And the award for outstanding comment on this video goes to you... well you secret agent!

  • @secretagentbloke I don't even know how he can turn the wheel! lol

  • Modern F1 drivers who? Great video, Gerhard was a very underrated F1 driver, but he had a lot of natural speed and car control! He deserves more recognition!

  • Berger ran in the most competitive time in Formula One, He went up against Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, and Keke Rosberg. 151 race victories between those 5 men and 12 world driving championships, and yet Berger still won 10 races despite that collection of legendary drivers.

  • Sorry Twin540i, I meant to rate it as a positive comment, not a negative one.

  • Incredible! I love Gerhard so much!

  • great gerhard.....nice memory

  • Ohhhh look at that GLORIOUS 4 wheels drift!!!

  • I can so well remember this, thanks for posting!
