What this guy is missing is that yes, he loses his faith, but doesn't regain it at the end. He sees that the people he has respected as elders in his community are just as corrupt as anyone, shrouded in hypocrisy and sin, only pretending to be of some higher standard. At the end, he warns his wife not to be sucked into their spell, but fails. In the end, he sees himself as the only person in his small society capable of realizing this, and becomes an outcast...
The fact that the title of this story embedded itself in the mind of a high school student who only took his studies half seriously is impressive! I revisited this classic on a whim and am glad I spent the time. Whether or not someone has a biblical basis to buy into the storyline is to be determined by the reader, but one cannot deny the plausibility of Hawthorn's direction. This world is a great wilderness and has the potential to entice even the most devout from the path of reason.
A man venters into the wood where his faith is tested and as a result he renounces his faith for atheism and rational scientific inquiry. Not accepting anything again on faith, but in scientific certainty.

This is not a story about someone's faith persevering through turmoil and then finding God.
