Eaton makes a great point. Brute force doesn't win occupations, you need social, economic and agricultural change as well. Simply beheading the dictator and basically letting the people do what they do is a bad plan. The surge might have worked on moving bad people out, but what about the people still there? they might be safer (note the word MIGHT) but they have a government that is lacking.

Saying the surge was just a small point concedes that Bush and Rummy's original strategy worked and did all of the hard work. As to Obama's specfics, he said he'd close Gitmo and he's closing it. He said he'd end torture and he's ending it. He said he would get us out of Iraq responsively, and he is doing so. He said he would strike in pakistan if he had intelligence, and he has struck in Pakistan. He said he would get millions of more children health insurance, he has gotten millions of more children health insurance.

We were in both Vietnam and Afghanistan decades before the wars. One could make a parallel between the Gulf of Tonkin and 9/11(I'm not one of those people though). Both were low intensity conflicts/wars at the beginning. Johnson inherited the war and expanded it, Obama will inherit Afghanistan and said he will expand it. Vietnam was the longest war in terms of months and Afghanistan is fast approaching the Independence War which was the second longest war. bla bla bla...
