While the morale of US Army is became lower and lower, but Viet Cong did not, they still continue the war with faiths could not be changed. The population in North Vietnam didn't reach the number of 30 millions in that time and they lost 3 millions !!!. For that reason i think France (my country) and US lost in Vietnam war :)

The japanese planes were far superior at least at the start of the war, but the US had the advantage of being able to build planes bigger and more powerful, because they didnt have to worry about running out of their supply of fuel. So later the US owned. Its all economy. The US isnt superior.
@Tressiensia finally someone who actually knows facts, japanese soldiers were far more loyal to their country than the americans, their planes the mitsubishi zero's were better at first, more manoeuvrable and faster than american planes at the start of the war when they had resources, it was fuel that eventually screwed them over.

........so they had more experience then the american soldier who was rushed through boot-camp and didnt really know what was up when they were cherrys and after 12 months they were great soldiers but went back to the world while a cherry took his place and had to learn shit by themselves cause nobody wanted to be near a new person cause more than likely they were killed in the 1st few months so why make friends when the odds were the new guy would be killed so why make friends with a dead guy
300 miles of tunnels in cu-chi,that is dedication.I remember seeing or reading about some of the tunnels went inside the american bases.They had hospitals,latrines also kitchens and used bicycles to power lights they also a stove pipe in the kitchen so they wouldnt get smoked out but the pipe wasnt right over where they cooked of course.Also some had many levels above and below.Some viet-cong were in the tunnels for years and didnt get to leave after 12 months they were battle hardoned ....
It is interesting that most people do not realize that the US was fighting a LIMITED WAR in Vietnam. Limited Bombing in Vietnam. No " official " incursions into Laos and Cambodia where the NVA/Cong Supply Train funneled it's Weapons & Munitions into S. Vietnam. In WWII our Commanders were allowed to Bomb Mainland Japan and attack any and all Japanese strogholds in the Pacific. Be it Land, Air or Sea with no restrictions. MacArthur, Nimitz and Halsey were actually allowed to do there jobs!

When a country goes to war it better have a real reason or if they are fighting a determined force, they will lose. That goes for ANY war. We had no reason to be there. None. The Vietnamese wanted first the French and then us out of their country. Kicking ass is not near as strong as defending one's country.

Many of the People posting here apparently do not understand that the US Military was only allowed to fight a limited War in Vietnam and not an all out War. By doing so many more men were killed than was necessary and the war dragged on longer than necessary. Had the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos & Cambodia been bombed as well as N. Vietnam we would have been out of there much sooner. All out war IS Kick Ass.

In a situation where if you don't KICK ASS, you and your men lose their lives? In Vietnam as in any War, Politics aside, If you want to survive, you better Kick Ass or the enemy will! Many troops while under fire aren't really concerned in that moment whether or not they should or should not be there. They are more concerned with staying Alive.
@JaracaraAsper I volunteered for the army in the 60's. Wasn't in Vietnam. I'm expressing my personal dislike for the term "Kick Ass" as a MOTIVATION for war. Some people think that's what war is all about - like a game. (Not against our troops) But once in that situation they realize "kick ass" is no reason for all out war which is why so many of our soldiers protested that war and any war that doesn't have a real reason to fight. We had no reason, the Vietnamese did.
That's what happens when you let the Politicians fight a war instead of the Professionals. Turn the Tactics and Operations over to the Special Operations Units like the Seals and Special Forces and they would have kicked Ass the way it needed to be kicked. Sure Tunnels and Booby Traps are cool but there's always a way around it. The US troops had to learn to fight the Viet Cong just like they had to learn the tricks of the Japanese in WWII. The Japanese used tunnels all over the Pacific.

While the morale of US Army is became lower and lower, but Viet Cong did not, they still continue the war with faiths could not be changed. The population in North Vietnam didn't reach the number of 30 millions in that time and they lost 3 millions !!!. For that reason i think France (my country) and US lost in Vietnam war :)

The japanese planes were far superior at least at the start of the war, but the US had the advantage of being able to build planes bigger and more powerful, because they didnt have to worry about running out of their supply of fuel. So later the US owned. Its all economy. The US isnt superior.

the vc won because they had something to fight for, they wanted to win and they didnt care how many lives it would take. america didnt want to lose one soldier, the vc had the tunnels and america coudnt win in those tunnels, there where to many vc who didnt give a shit of they would live or die and thats wy america lost, i personaly dont get why we always have to interfere in wars that arent us to fight, but hey who am i to judge

........so they had more experience then the american soldier who was rushed through boot-camp and didnt really know what was up when they were cherrys and after 12 months they were great soldiers but went back to the world while a cherry took his place and had to learn shit by themselves cause nobody wanted to be near a new person cause more than likely they were killed in the 1st few months so why make friends when the odds were the new guy would be killed so why make friends with a dead guy

300 miles of tunnels in cu-chi,that is dedication.I remember seeing or reading about some of the tunnels went inside the american bases.They had hospitals,latrines also kitchens and used bicycles to power lights they also a stove pipe in the kitchen so they wouldnt get smoked out but the pipe wasnt right over where they cooked of course.Also some had many levels above and below.Some viet-cong were in the tunnels for years and didnt get to leave after 12 months they were battle hardoned ....

It is interesting that most people do not realize that the US was fighting a LIMITED WAR in Vietnam. Limited Bombing in Vietnam. No " official " incursions into Laos and Cambodia where the NVA/Cong Supply Train funneled it's Weapons & Munitions into S. Vietnam. In WWII our Commanders were allowed to Bomb Mainland Japan and attack any and all Japanese strogholds in the Pacific. Be it Land, Air or Sea with no restrictions. MacArthur, Nimitz and Halsey were actually allowed to do there jobs!

Anybody who is a student of Warfare knows that American Troops encountered this exact same thing in WWII against the Japanese. @JaracaraAsper Many vets came back and protested against the war because they knew it was wrong. The purpose of war is not to "kick ass.". It's not a football game. When a country goes to war it better have a real reason or if they are fighting a determined force, they will lose. That goes for ANY war. We had no reason to be there. None. The Vietnamese wanted first the French and then us out of their country. Kicking ass is not near as strong as defending one's country.

@thestoryplease First of all we both need to correct our terminology, Korea as was Vietnam were Police Actions, They were not declared "WARS" and I do agree with you we should not have been there. Just as I believe we should not be in the Middle East now. Also, the Viet Cong formerly the Viet Minh, fought the French before us and the Japanese Occupation before that. But re-read both my previous posts and you will understand what I meant by Kicking Ass. All out War, no half measures!

@thestoryplease I have been in the Military and had many Vietnam Veterans in my Unit. Many of the People posting here apparently do not understand that the US Military was only allowed to fight a limited War in Vietnam and not an all out War. By doing so many more men were killed than was necessary and the war dragged on longer than necessary. Had the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos & Cambodia been bombed as well as N. Vietnam we would have been out of there much sooner. All out war IS Kick Ass.

@thestoryplease In re-reading your post , I have to ask this question, have you ever served in the Military? In a Combat Arms Unit? In a situation where if you don't KICK ASS, you and your men lose their lives? In Vietnam as in any War, Politics aside, If you want to survive, you better Kick Ass or the enemy will! Many troops while under fire aren't really concerned in that moment whether or not they should or should not be there. They are more concerned with staying Alive.

@JaracaraAsper I volunteered for the army in the 60's. Wasn't in Vietnam. I'm expressing my personal dislike for the term "Kick Ass" as a MOTIVATION for war. Some people think that's what war is all about - like a game. (Not against our troops) But once in that situation they realize "kick ass" is no reason for all out war which is why so many of our soldiers protested that war and any war that doesn't have a real reason to fight. We had no reason, the Vietnamese did.

That's what happens when you let the Politicians fight a war instead of the Professionals. Turn the Tactics and Operations over to the Special Operations Units like the Seals and Special Forces and they would have kicked Ass the way it needed to be kicked. Sure Tunnels and Booby Traps are cool but there's always a way around it. The US troops had to learn to fight the Viet Cong just like they had to learn the tricks of the Japanese in WWII. The Japanese used tunnels all over the Pacific.
