One of the greatest Tull songs and among the very best of Ian's lyrics....this last stanza is fantastically poignant...wonderful poetry...
The still-born child can't feel the rain as the chequered flag falls once again. The deaf composer completes his final score. He'll never hear the sweet encore. The chequered flag, the bull's red rag, the lemming-hearted hordes running ever faster to the shore singing, Isn't it grand to be playing to the stand, dead or alive.
@badumpy i pretty much agree but i like the '77-79 lineup more...pretty much the same exact lineup with David (now Dee) Palmer added as the synth player/violist/multi-instrumentalist/arranger...much more depth was added to the line up live and on albums imo...even though in '76 and earlier he was studio arranger uncredited...
I dont' think it's Shona because her nose isn't quite right. Shona has more of a pointed nose. She looks like the same woman dancing in Salamander cilp. I thought maybe it was Angela Allen of Carmen, who came with John Glascock and did some backing vocals for this album, but, the face isn't right for Angela either.
So happy to find this posted. John Glascock holds a special place in my heart. May he rest in peace. This song could be thought of as a tribute to him.
While I have loved pretty much all Tull players, I believe all ardent fans would agree, the 2 biggest mistakes in Tull history would be the sacking of John Evan, how ever inadvertent, and allowing Barrie Barlow to become unhappy enough that he wanted to leave. Jeffrey was just goin, there was no stopping him, same w Clive B, honorable mention to Cornick and Peggy in the irreplacable department.
While I do not know how all this happened, I agree. John was extremely hurted. It could be hard to suffer this one-man-show, even if they had known that Tull wouldn't be the same without Ian's leading.
John Glascock, yes, but I was referring to John Evans. My comment was originally posted as a reply to a comment about Evans being sacked, but youtube messes up things :)
Hi, with respect u are confusing your Tullies, that is Jeffrey who left to his real career, as a painter in 75, Oddly, even with Ian's prodding and support, he has been unwilling to show any of it in public, knowing Jeffrey would be very surprised if they are landscapes he is painting. Evan was sort of inadvertently removed, long story available elsewhere like Tullpress, but on the other hand he claimed to be so unhappy in the later years that in some part he seems to have wanted out.
@tullist Believe it or not, I actually saw a painting by Jeffrey Hammond for auction on the Christies Auction website. I think a friend of his put it up for sale.

This album is ridiculously underrated. This one's always been a favorite for me. Of course I like the Pied Piper a little more hehe.

A tooth caused his death... how unbelievably sad is that?

Correcting myself: the combination of a congenital heart disease and drug abuse eventually killed him.
