  • well, ur kinda wrong about the reptiles not likeing to be handled, Bearded dragons really thrive off of being out of there cage and with human interacting.

  • @ReptileBattleGround "Some" bearded dragons might. I've also seen some that try to take off their human owners' fingers.

  • Ok then good tell them that there not like mammals......don't use ten minutes telling people not to get them ...... And most people don't just throw them in Craigslist because they are disappointed they put them up because most are first time owners that don't have a ten by ten cage for a 15

  • @emmamk13 When did I say "most" people do that? Please don't put words in my mouth. However, MANY people do do that - I get e-mails very often from people asking me to take their animals, "I realized it doesn't interact with me the way I want it to," and then threaten - threaten - to go to CL with it if I don't take it. CL is a pretty terrible place to sell animals - you may have had a few good experiences with it, but I've had a lot of bad ones.

  • Whoa there bearded dragons and boas and other reptiles forum bonds with there owner and don't go saying DON'T GET A REPTILE because there are people who would love to have reptiles and what your saying is not totally true

  • @emmamk13 And then there are boas and bearded dragons etc. that -don't- bond at all with their owners. My point is that people go into these animals expecting the same kind of communication as a dog or cat would have, and then they are disappointed and throw them at craigslist or some other horrible place. I want people to understand that reptiles are not mammals.

  • seeing that gecko wrap around your fingers makes me think of a ring shaped like a gecko with its tail curled around a finger with the gecko hugging it as well

  • i got a gargoyle gecko just over a week ago, didnt get it with the intention of snuggling it daily but he's about 4-6 months old (or so i've been told) and he seems to be very nervous, even when i go to gently touch him he darts away. have managed to pick him up but literally jumps every chance he gets (even from shoulder to the floor!) will he calm down a little as he gets older? i've had bad luck with pets in the past an worried he's gonna be that way for good

  • @vega0vegasv1 I think a lot of gargs and cresties tend to mellow down as they get older. However I encourage you not to dislike it if it is a bit jumpy - it's sometimes part of reptile ownership. They are generally meant to be looked at and not played with. If you only had it for a week, leave it alone for another week (only feed and water it out of dishes/misting, no handling) and see if that helps it settle in some.

  • @stolenmilkcrate thats helpful thanks. i suppose the only thing i was always wary of is if it didnt get used to me handling it early on it'd be worse as time went on. still, it's been said that they arent for handling all the time and believe me, if i wanted something i could have fondle regularly i would have invested in a hamster or something. i suppose i've just gotta be more patient. thanks for your help, your videos are really useful and informative

  • @vega0vegasv1 Haha what I remember from hamsters is them being mean bitey little cusses too tho I am sure it depends on the animal. I think with gentle handling for 5 mins every 3rd day and working up from there you will have a gecko that won't be too afraid of you.

  • my gecko isnt jumping is this bad?

  • @willthethrillicious Not necessarily.. the larger cresteds I have especially are pretty sedate.

  • Very well said. If you want something to hug get a dog or something. only way I can think an animal would like to be handled is if you hand feed it or if you are warm. Even then its not love it's just looking for food or its cold XD. I don't own a gecko, but I am life long enthusiast of keeping things in glass boxes

  • Reptiles have feelings my dragon loves to be held and sleeps on me. He wont sleep on my mom or dad so theres a bond there

  • @lilfeeesh I definitely never said they don't have 'feelings' - they probably feel 'fear' or whatever instinct causes them to run away, etc. But, there are other things to consider - your skin may feel more comfortable, your scent may be more appealing, you may sit more still than your parents... etc. One animal sitting still on you isn't proof positive of a critter having feelings.

  • @stolenmilkcrate Animals feel love too. Thats all I have to say about this subject. If a dog can feel love, so can a lizard. And if you try to deny that a dog can love someone... Then I just don't know.

  • @ClassicSpyroFan I have two pooches and I love them dearly, but I would be kidding myself if I thought that if I dropped dead on the floor they would not eventually eat my dead corpse out of hunger because they love me :) (Though I wager my 2 cats would be first to dine...) I do think that certain animals much more easily form bonds with people - dogs have been domesticated now for how many thousands of years? Snakes and lizards are not what I would consider "domesticated" yet.

  • I feel I should add, not ALL reptiles "tolerate" or "not" when it comes to handling. Our corn snake loves being out and about with us. She comes nosing at the glass when I'm a the computer, and likes to twist herself around our hands and tries frequently to get in my hair. >_>

  • @SodabottleSplat But how do you know for sure she's not doing that because she associates you with food or warmth, or just sees motion and comes to investigate like most corns do?

  • @stolenmilkcrate I suppose I don't. But I have a hard time believing an animal that will happily come to my hand doesn't want to be touched--she's never fed by hand, only with tongs. If nothing else, it certainly doesn't bother her in the slightest. It's obvious when she's "had enough" and right back she goes. I don't like classifying reptiles as unfeeling creatures. They have personality like any other animal, they just express it differently. =)

  • @SodabottleSplat Their sense of smell is so amazing that even if you are using tongs your smell is still everywhere. Also you have built up a repertoire of movement = food for her. I do think they have personalities! Every gecko I've had is a little bit different. But unfortunately too many people become disgruntled when their gecko/reptile of choice does not come snuggle with them. I just want people to be aware that that -generally- does not happen, and not to expect too much.

  • Crescenza is absolutley beautiful! I'm looking into getting a crested gecko, because as much as I'd love to take care of an animal, I don't have enough spare time to be social enough with a cat or dog. I'm trying to go down to my local reptile shop as often as possible to be more comfortable around them. One thing I was wondering is, if one was to jump out of my hands, once it hit the floor would it run away and hide, or would it be easy to pick up again? I'm worried it might get lost or hurt.

  • @LetThySoulDespair It really depends - babies can tend to be more jumpy, adults tend to be more sedate - but it seems that often if you get a very young gecko and practice holding it, they will be calmer. When they get off to running a bit they seem to go "runrunrun... stop... what was I doing again?" You could probably practice in a bathroom or other small room, sitting on the ground, with the air vent covered over just to be on the safe side :)

  • @stolenmilkcrate Thanks for the advice. I do actually have a smaller room nearby that I hadn't even thought about using. To be honest, the babies I held in the shop seemed more interested in jumping all over me than anywhere else :) I just want to make sure I really know what I'm letting myself in for before I make any commitments, and your viedeos have really helped with that, so thanks!

  • WOW really nice colourations!!!

  • I have a white lined gecko, and he is not jumpy, but gets a little nervous when i handle him. He is new, but i think with some work, he will be okay. people told me they are agrissive, and will bite you every chance you get, but mine lets me pet him, and eats from my fingers

  • @reininghorses57 there are exceptions for every animal - i know people with tame tokays but those are usually biters as well.

  • Great video, and you make a great point. I'm lucky that my crestie (he's about Nacho's size) is pretty mellow and will climb or jump right onto my hand. He seems to like coming out of the tank to explore. But does that mean he loves me? Lol, no. At best he probably thinks I'm some kind of benign, ambulatory tree.

  • i disagree. my lepord gecko is the same size as ur crested gecko and he will lay in the palms of my hands and lay there for warmth and actually will sit in one place on my body because my body heat is 98.6 degree's so he will sit there and sometimes fall asleep . depends on what type of gecko you get

  • @greenfiend42000 What exactly are you disagreeing with? This vid is about crested geckos... not leopards.

  • @stolenmilkcrate you said if you want to have a pet to hold dont get reptiles. and im proving you wrong

  • @greenfiend42000 No, I said if you want something that will love you back, don't look into reptiles. You had a good experience with your leo, but I have had friends that had very skittish, biting leos that did not tolerate handling. My point was that too many people buy reptiles thinking they are all small and cuddly, but some will bite, and it freaks people out. I want them to be prepared before they buy, and not to go into it expecting love and cuddles, because people will be disappointed.

  • @stolenmilkcrate and thats the sad part because then people stop caring for these beautiful creatures because they are not interactive. i have 4 leo's that i rescued from a animal shelter a few weeks ago and the condition they came to me in was heart breaking . but now they are one of the most social leo's ive ever owned .

  • @greenfiend42000 Right... my point with the video is not to discourage people from buying reptiles, but to -encourage- them to understand where reptiles are coming from, before taking them into their homes and then being disappointed when they're not snuggly little puppies. Your geckos are social, and that's great. Some are not, and never come around, even with repeated gentle handling. I am tired of people wanting to buy these animals and then getting pissy at me because they bite or run.

  • what is your website called

  • @Ikassatcod ....... it's at the end of the vid and linked in the vid info... come on guys :/

  • can i use reptibark for the bottom of my crested geckos cage

  • @Ikassatcod I hate bark for this species. They can swallow the bits and not be able to pass the pieces. I have all of this info on my website

  • and how much cgd and water do you add to make it like a paste

  • @Ikassatcod The instructions for mixing should be right on the package

  • do you have any reptiles other than cresties?

  • @Ikassatcod Currently just E. agricolae; have also had gargs, G. marginata, and U. phantasticus in the recent past.

  • i was wondering what is the best cage system or brand for a crested gecko i am buying one today and would like to know thx

i was thinking about a zoo medi naturalistic cage but i dont know if that will hold

    a adult crested gecko

  • @Ikassatcod You'd have to let me know what the dimensions of the cage are. I like 20 gallons or so for an adult. You can take the dimensions and put them in an online gallons calculator to figure out if the size is right.

  • @stolenmilkcrate its dimensions are 12x12x18 and it goes up

  • @stolenmilkcrate it says its its 11.2gallons so i dont think it will house an adult

another thing if i made my own custum cage would a wir and wood cage hold in moisture and humidity

  • @Ikassatcod Wiiiire... I would probably avoid. Unless it is a lid of very fine wire screen. I just hate how so much of it can rust. Wood would need to be the proper kind (not cedar etc - something that doesn't have toxicity to animals) and would need to be sealed properly. An 18x18x18 or something similar would be good if they have that.

  • @stolenmilkcrate k thx i already found an18x18x18 its pricy but it will have to do thx for the help

  • @stolenmilkcrate sry to bother you again but what should i buy for his cage i have a tall plant a plant that sticks to the glass a long stick so he can climb and a log and hut that looks like a stump

  • @Ikassatcod It kind of depends on how well that stuff fills the enclosure. You want enough hiding spots for him so he feels safe. If you don't have the tank yet it's going to be hard to tell. Sorry I can't be more help on that. Just make sure the "stick" if it was found outside was baked at 300 degrees for maybe a half hour to kill off any pests inside the wood (keep an eye on it so you don't burn down your house, haha).

  • @stolenmilkcrate k thx for the advice

  • or get a chameleon or snake if u want something slow

  • I don't think you writ this in your website but if you are to keep a crestie in a community tank (tank with many different specices in this case reptiles/amphibians) what species of reptiles or amphibians can you keep them with??????

  • @TheCombatcookie I don't write that in my website because, for the most part, it's a terrible idea. The most I would put in with a crested is a Giant African millipede, in a planted tank - the millipede will benefit from the droppings the gecko leaves, and the gecko will benefit from having its poop eaten. Otherwise there are no real benefits and more harm done by trying to combine species in the small tanks most people use.

  • i hate my crested gecko. it is very aggressive and is extremely picky on its food. ive tried cgd, crickets, meal and wax worms, and every fruit there is. i try to handle my gecko a few time a week (2-4) and he is..well attempted to feed on a regular schedule. ive had it for about two years and its really aggressive it already dropped its tail. idk what to do with it. im tired of caring for its mean

  • @nautilus9008 Welcome to reptiles - they're not here to snuggle with you. Give it away to someone who will care for it if you hate it so much.

  • @stolenmilkcrate welcome? ive had reptiles my whole life. and no shit they arnt here to snuggle, but they say these stupid things are easy to care for and my iguanas are twice as easy

  • @nautilus9008 So uh what was the point in posting here then? If you know what you're doing, good for you? They are incredibly easy to care for, some just bite sometimes, but that doesn't make them hard to care for. They don't need 6-12-foot rooms or special lighting like iguanas do, for one, and they wont leave the gigantic bleeding bite marks that iguanas have left on me.

  • @stolenmilkcrate i posted here for maybe advice but you dont seem to have any except smart ass remarks.

  • @nautilus9008 If you had just asked for advice, instead of just saying "I hate its mean ass" and "I hate my crested gecko" and "im tired of caring for it" maybe I would have had advice to give... You didn't say you wanted help, you just sounded like you wanted to complain. The only thing I would tell someone who legit hates their pet is to rehome it with someone who doesn't feel hatred toward it. If you really want help instead of just repeatedly saying how awful your gecko is, let me know.

  • The morph for the first gecko, not the others, sorry. xD wasn't finished watching the vid yet. :D Great job!

  • What morph is that, because I got one with that exact same morph, and I can't find the name for it. :/

  • @lugia492 I dont care much for the morph names, probably a flame or harlequin depending on who you ask

  • Thanks and those geckos have really good variation of colors and patterns

  • Can I feed him the grasshoppers that I find outside or should I buy the ones at the store?

  • @Ikassatcod never do bugs from outside. they can have parasites inside, or have gone through pesticides.

  • @stolenmilkcrate another thing my crested wont eat cgd only yogurt is this healthy?

  • @Ikassatcod No... you really need the gecko to be eating CGD. Yogurt is a dairy-based food, please keep in mind they would never eat dairy anything in the wild...

  • When I handle my crested gecko he doesn't want to be put back in does this mean he doesn't like the inclosure

  • @Ikassatcod No it means he's a gecko. They are just like that sometimes.

  • i learned alot from you just by watching this video, i bought my crested gecko just 2 days ago, its my first time with a reptile and did tons of research befor getting one

but my gecko is jumpy aswel i though it may be something that i did but by watching this video i think i understand them more :) so thanks!

i did noticed already that there behavior change when the temprature and humidity changes, they can stress out or be calmer then normal or they move

  • Crescenza is beautiful! I assume they are all fired up?

  • @JacksonCarl123 Yeah I believe I had them all fired up for the vid.

  • I wish I had watched this video before I bought my crestie. It would have helped me a lot haha. My gecko's doing fine, though.

  • Is it weird that when ever I hold my juvie crestie she poops on me

  • @tcon97 nah a lot of reptiles do that due to the warmth of your hands.

  • how long does it take for a crested gecko to become fully grown?

  • @reptilefan1231 Depends on what you feed it, what its temps are, what its genetics are, etc. Different for every animal.

  • That's so true. I keep Leos and they are less jumpy, but they do like to move. And they always have a forward motivation XD. They barely tolerate handling, so I don't bother them that much. I do also have hamsters, and god, what a difference! They love to be handled :)

  • How many times should I feed my crestie? I just got one yesterday :]. I i only have CGD

  • @lepordgekomaster That's the kind of stuff you need to read up on before getting a pet -__- I give my geckos fresh CGD every other night. Don't try to hand-feed, just put it in a small milk jug cap near his favorite hiding spot and put it in the same place every other night when you replace it.

  • @stolenmilkcrate well is it normal for it to just eat it for like only 10 seconds?

  • @lepordgekomaster Yes... they don't usually gorge themselves. They are a small animal that is cold-blooded and thrives at low temps... they don't have what we would consider a high metabolism.

  • Comment removed

  • @stolenmilkcrate Okay now im very concered. My crestie is not sticking to the glass wall and the tail curls when i touch it under. They say it has MBD i think.

  • @lepordgekomaster "They" who? Email me pics, I can't tell you anything at all from what you have said. My email is on my site. PS they don't always stick to glass so don't freak about that, it might just be shedding.

  • @stolenmilkcrate I meant by some people. And I saw ur crested gecko bath video and that kinda helped me. Sorry if i annoyed you :P

  • @lepordgekomaster You didn't annoy me but there's not really any way for me to help without pics etc. or telling me whether the people who told you that were there in person, know what they're talking about, etc.

  • @stolenmilkcrate I was just wondering that why my crestie didnt stick to glass. But since you told me it doesnt always stick in glass gives me relieve. I've owned leopard geckos once but never a crested or aboreal geckos.

  • @lepordgekomaster Yahhh it happens sometimes. They're gross little buggers and fingerpaint with their food sometimes, or go for a shed, or sometimes the glass gets a dusty covering on it after water misted in there dries and leaves spots. No biggie unless you have other health issues present! Its all good

  • @stolenmilkcrate his toes curl up sometimes. but i guess thats cuz somethings in it. hes really active too :]

  • @lepordgekomaster Their toes curling up is normal. I talk about this on my website and I have a few pics too.

  • My crestie was amazingly bouncy and jumpy but she was cute in the way that it seemed she was on a mission to discover everything in the house.

  • @geckosonthebrain First... relax. They grow at different rates depending on the temps they are kept at and what they are fed, and sometimes genetics as well. If you feed mostly Crested Gecko Diet they may grow slowly, but it's OK, this is a healthy diet. If you include live food once a week (like crickets, feeder roaches) in their diet they may grow a little faster. Don't worry... it's not a race, they will get there when they get there.

  • Thanks for the advice. Should I have my humidity at around 80% though??

  • @TrampFIGHTS Not continually. I have all of that info already on my website.

  • Cute geckos! Taquito is my favorite though. I have a crested gecko that is about to shed. What should I do??

  • @TrampFIGHTS Nothing... if your humidity is decent the gecko doesn't need any help. They are pretty self-sufficient as long as you keep the food and humidity at good levels.

  • That helps alot.. Mine really loves me tho lol

  • The last one is so beautiful!

  • @stolenmilkcrate

ok that's good, I feed mostly CGD with some insects once or twice a month.

Thanks for the help and great vid btw

  • Great video! How old is Nacho in this video? I was wondering do you have any crested geckos that don't like insects?

  • @TheJadeReptile I do not have the hatch date on Nacho as her breeder did not keep track that year unfortunately. I have a male or two that will turn up their noses at bugs but most of them do take insects. They seem to grow a bit better with them.

  • @stolenmilkcrate Okay, thanks. To she is the same size as my Syn. My crested gecko, Syn, does not like insects. But he loves the CGD. And Flame, my mother's crested gecko just gobbles them up.

  • All your cresties are beautiful. Donut's my fav, though. :)

  • @didnotqualify Thanks! I can't wait to see how she looks when she's done growing :)

  • My female crested gecko is approx 6 months old and is only as big as donut, should I be worried?

  • @AwesomePetz Nope they grow at different rates depending on your temps, their genetics, and what they are eating. I have found that geckos that will take weekly live food tend to grow faster than those just on CGD.

  • I love Nacho :D

  • @Drakedragon1315 I like her too, thanks :)

  • What does your rack/cage system look like? And what would you say a minimum cage size would be?

  • @dogzkid I don't use a rack system, I just have different enclosures throughout the home. I cover min. cage size etc. on my website tho

  • @stolenmilkcrate My gecko sits on my head when i go to the store to get crickets!

  • @CarmelCrestys I honestly don't really recommend folks leave a gecko on their head and just walk around somewhere... if you are 5 or 6 feet tall, that's quite a fall for a gecko to land onto hard linoleum or asphalt. I have read about geckos getting broken bones from a jump like that :/

  • I got a baby gecko from my pet store :) its about 2 months old now and its name is Yoshi. It is very chill and when I hold it, it just kinda sits there or climbs up my arm onto my shoulder. One time my brothers girlfriend came over and it jumped on her boob. It was kinda hilarious. I can't wait to see my baby grow up!

  • Great video! Thanks for the info and update!

  • whataburger is sick!

  • when my gecko is stalking crickets he will wag his tail, does it mean he doesnt want me to watch him eat or is frightened?

  • @Crazyboutreptiles Sometimes they will move their tails like that before jumping at live food.

  • they look like little monkeys when they are tailless lol

  • @TreF68 But a monkey has a tail? lol

  • It bothers me so much not seeing your face lol

  • @ToadPwnz it would bother you more seeing it, i am horrifying

  • Nacho is soooo cute!! ^_^

  • Crescenza is GORGEOUS! My goodness!

Good video btw, you are absolutely bringing up an important topic.

  • P.S. I should have waited until I finished watching the video before commenting - Crescenza is also amazing!

  • Whataburger IS SO GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely stunning, I'm incredibly jealous! :)

  • WhataBurger is such a pretty little guy/girl. Lovely contrast!

It was also neat seeing the gradual size difference between newly hatched, young juvenile, older juvenile, and adult. People need to be aware that just because you bought a 10 or 15g crestie, he's not gonna stay that size, and you have you house him appropriately - meaning as your baby gets larger, so do his living requirements.

Always love your vids, JB! Keep up the good work!

  • donut's pattern is awesome I want one like him! and thanks for putting this up this will help the people that excessively handle there geckos.

  • Great advice. I had an adult male before and he was NEVER calm, he would run around his cage like crazy if I went anywhere near it, and handling was out of the question because he would leap and run in the opposite direction until I put him back. Then he would run around in his cage for a few minutes after I went away... quite sad so I left him alone, so I didn't stress him! That's the worst case I've ever had. Most of them are ok though like you say, especially females.

  • ahhhhh whatahottie whataburger!

  • I can see your haaannnds

  • @Pyroblazer creeeeepyyyyyy

  • Beautiful gecko! Wow....amazing :)

  • What wonderful advice as always, but I also wanted to say that I LOVE Crescenza. I love her colors, and how her crests are lighter around her head. So awesome!

  • I find wild geckos easiest to handle.. Once you've caught them!!! Here in Europe just look under a stone a BANG a Turkish gecko. I think the reason they mainly sit in your hand rather than jump is to trick you into believing they aren't a gecko and you don't eat them :)

  • @HERPINGinWALES Reminds me of my male crested gecko. He's going on 3 years old and despite having handled him as a hatchling he's still quite wary of me. If I turn on the lights while he's out he'll basically freeze hoping I don't notice him. If that doesn't work he'll hide in one of two places in his enclosure; either up in the plastic vine he always sleeps in or behind the cork log in an 'emergency'. He's pretty attached to that vine. He sleeps in it even if it falls in the soil.

  • holy cow! that little gecko looks like it can be a ring on your finger! it's the way it grips your fingers that makes it appear that way.
