I also learned this story in Sunday school exactly as it was presented here. The bible's disgusting and it's great how they point out that children might be considered good people. 1. Lot knew the "angels" were no ordinary men. (He bowed down to them the moment he met them). In his mind, he will give his all, his own life and his daughters included, to protect the angels. At the spur of the moment he used whatever means he could think of.
2. Perhaps, Lot knew the "angels", as heavenly beings were powerful enough to destroy them

This story was taught to me in Sunday school, but it was a PG version that didn't mention the gang rape thing. When I read it on my own as a teen, it was one the stories that shook my faith, and I tried to suppress. On top of the immorality of Lot, why would an omniscient god not know exactly how many righteous people there were? Why would this god who is perfectly just have to be convinced by Abraham, to consider the possibility that his plan wasn't exactly well thought out?
As I recall, it isn't 50 good people god say he'll smite the towns if aren't found; it's 5. He starts at 50, then gets haggled down to 5. This is what makes the story especially interesting for a couple reasons. First, why stop at 5? Isn't 4 good people good enough reason to not wipe out a couple towns? Isn't 1 enough to make it a not entirely justifiable act? Second, if the two son-in-laws were good and did what Lot said, then the whole town would've been spared. The more you know.

Lot wanted to prevent massive bloodshed on the people by sacrificing his daughters. (It may not be the case, but it's possible. Just a thought.) If this is the case, Lot may be quite noble.
3. Third possibility I can think of: It happened so quickly that he said some stupid things. Hey, we all said stupid things before.. Not that he really pushed the daughters outside..
Anyway, God sees the heart, and God sees Lot was a righteous man.
In conclusion, nothing wrong with this story.

1. Lot knew the "angels" were no ordinary men. (He bowed down to them the moment he met them). In his mind, he will give his all, his own life and his daughters included, to protect the angels. At the spur of the moment he used whatever means he could think of.
2. Perhaps, Lot knew the "angels", as heavenly beings were powerful enough to destroy them

We can see the extent of the perversity in Sodom: "all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house." Imagine, ALL THE MEN, young and old, wanted to rape the 2 men (angels). All the people there could have already been contaminated with sex-related diseases akin to AIDS. And they could have been doing it for generations. We know that these diseases can pass to the next generation. The children could have been born with the diseases.

1) Lot may not be lying when he said the daughters were virgins. They could be pledged to be married to the "sons in law", but had not consumated the marriage yet. Anyway, even if he did lie, that does not disqualify him as a "righteous man" in God's sight.
2) Could there be innocent people among the whole city? Apparently not, in God's sight. In the Genesis 18, we find that God would not destroy it if there's ten righteous.

Regarding the sins of Sodom, IT IS GOD WHO DECLARED SODOMY TO BE A SIN – A VILE ABOMINATION. It was not Christians who made that decision. They simply acknowledge what God says about homosexuality.

It was a far worse vile crime for the men of the city to gang rape two men than for men to rape women.
A similar situation was faced by Chinese families during the Rape of Nanking when Japanese soldiers forced sons to rape their mothers and fathers to rape their daughters. It was far worse than if the women had been raped by the Japanese.

This story was taught to me in Sunday school, but it was a PG version that didn't mention the gang rape thing. When I read it on my own as a teen, it was one the stories that shook my faith, and I tried to suppress. On top of the immorality of Lot, why would an omniscient god not know exactly how many righteous people there were? Why would this god who is perfectly just have to be convinced by Abraham, to consider the possibility that his plan wasn't exactly well thought out?

As I recall, it isn't 50 good people god say he'll smite the towns if aren't found; it's 5. He starts at 50, then gets haggled down to 5. This is what makes the story especially interesting for a couple reasons. First, why stop at 5? Isn't 4 good people good enough reason to not wipe out a couple towns? Isn't 1 enough to make it a not entirely justifiable act? Second, if the two son-in-laws were good and did what Lot said, then the whole town would've been spared. The more you know.

Yeah, I remember asking about this horror story in sunday school when I was about 11 or so; the teacher just kind of talked around it for a second and then changed the subject to the sermon on the mount (?). Even back then, I knew somehting was up with that. It was probably then I started to really become an atheist now that I think about it.

When reading this story, it is easy to feel sorry for the daughters--until they get their father drunk and have incestuous sex with him. Then you realize that this is one completely fucked-up family who deserve no sympathy at all. I feel more sorry for the babies and children that God burned alive in those two cities. But Christians say he took them to heaven, anyway, so no worries.

Nobody get their morals from Scripture. Proof of it is that some of the Scripture's "immortal Laws" are not followed by modern theists. Therefore they pick and chose according to some pre-existing sense of what's good. Therefore morality pre-exists.

1) why did god need to send angels to see if there was 50 good men, kind of seems that god is oblivious to who is righteous and who is not.

2) What kind of "righteous " man can not even teach his daughters that incest is wrong.

The sad things is that the Sodom and Gomorrah story actually was taught to me in Sunday school.

This story is taught in Sunday school.... in some Sunday schools its no question that God can do what he wants and it's not bad if God did it. I grew up in such. I bought a kid's CD with the Battle of Jericho on it and while listening to it I thought, "oh my god, this is horrible and I was taught this as a cute Bible story as a kid!?"
