I think he's muting the strings. just raise your fingers a little so that your not pushing down on the fret completely

Hi mate, he's muting the strings on the up stroke. So he plays the power chord like the E power chord on a down stroke, then on the upstroke he is muting the strings. Then he moves onto the next power chord on a downstroke and so on. The upstroke being muted just adds to it and keeps the rythm. Hope that helps mate.
