People back in the 1850's thought he was insane for wanting to build such a huge ship. The convention at the time was to build several smaller ones.

I think the Great Eastern was six (!) times larger than any other ship was up to that point. It really dwarfed the rest when it was launched.

I love this video. Simply fantastic. Brunel was a freaking genius. A ship almost 700 ft in length, and weighing more than the entire Spanish Armada. Never been done before but he did it. He opened a new area in shipbuilding, literally.
