I've seen a presentation of Overture 1812 in Sao Paulo, Brazil in the early 90s complete with cannon shots, placed behind the audience. I'll never forget it. My late father then decided to talk with the army officials who fired the shots and figure out how they did the timing - it was all based on visual cues and knowledge of the time it took to fire. Amazing.

I dunno. I prefer the concussive "boom" of a firework artillery shell than the "bang" of a cannon going off. That's my opinion. Check out a few different versions without the artillery. They use a bass drum for the effect; hence, why I probably like the boom over the bang.
