Clearly the engineers did not design for ths contingency.

I suspect that someone was experimenting with the fuel source, i.e. jet fuel.

The Lambretta shown here is a two-cycle engine which means you mix the lubrication with the fuel at the fuel tank.

If you introduce a fuel which is not desgned for this engine it will reactt abnormally.
