I kinda don't like what happened back then when white people remade music and got all the credit for it. I mean, i know that this didn't happen to all of the time. But since technology hadn't advanced far enough for people to know...
What does it mean that Beach boys can sing but they can not sang as you say?
What you said is a little bit rassistic. I dont care whether the musicians are black or white, I dont give a damn, as long as as their music gives me goosebumps, which is the case with both Beach boys and Frankie Lymons version of this song. And what do you mean when you say that this version is tailored for white people? It is an insult to me, because both versions are beautiful to my ears and my heart!
This is one of the best things I've ever heard. What a perfect use of Brian Wilson's perfect falsetto, my absolute favorite thing about Beach Boys music.
@derspenc I wasn't referring to this song as Beach Boys music. I was saying that this song showcases my favorite element of recordings of their own songs. I'm not comparing them to The Teenagers, whose style is completely different. But I maintain that this song is a perfect one for them to sing, because Brian's falsetto was so spectacular.
One of Brian's amazing falsettos! Mike's bass voice is good too! Harmonies...they just TERRIFIC! Though Frankie Lymon's version's also great; for his age he had powerful voice but... Brian Wilson is Brian Wilson.
Brian had the most gorgeous falsetto in his younger years. The Lymon version is thin and he sounds like a little kid, which of course, he was. I think this performance is pure sweet soul and I like this arrangement way better also. To each his own.
Spectorcular. I love this. Must be Hal Blaine here. It's.. well.. it's striking. Brian took Lymon's song and smeared it with a big blob of genius-paint.
This is not 'just' better. This is written for The Beach Boys.
@MizzReyRey Stealing? On this criteria a lot of songs wouldn't have been recorded and you would have nothing to compare, covering is a hell of a lot better than sampling, this song suited the beach boys perfectly with their wonderful harmonies and really what is a better version is fairly irrelevant, it comes down to what people enjoy.
@truthasfineprint I dont know that song but during that tym of racism.... it was pretty easy for English people to get what they wanted hence "the bitting of the negros lyrics, tunes, songs"
@JYPCB beach boys are actually an american band, and i suggest you look up "don't worry baby" you'll realize that brian wilson is a genius and is not just trying to rip off other musicians
@truthasfineprint Brian Wilson should've started writing his own songs in the first place.Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers wrote this song in 1956. The Beach Boys then made a cover version of the same song in 1964, follwoing their own hit single which was
"Dont worry Baby" which was also released in 1964.Coincidence??
Did you know about a deal that went down with Brian Wilson and the Manager of Capitol Records while they were making this song " Dont worry Baby"??? i'm just saying what i know
@JYPCB it was common in the early sixties for big bands on capitol to release cover songs on their records. I mean look at the beatle's earliest stuff: they have a cover of johnny b. good(which beach boys have borrowed from also on 'fun fun fun'). I was trying to say that Brian Wilson had the capacity to write truely genius songs yet also serve as an expert 'arranger" when it came to already written songs(such as sloop john b, why do fools fall in love, hushabye).
@JYPCB I know that capitol had started pressuring Brian do keep to the fun in the sun formula in as far as 66'(they released a best of compilation right after pet sounds was released without briasn consent in order to boost sales and get the beach boys oldies heard again). theres even a story of brian recording answers to questions (yes, no) and playing it for the capitol executives when they asked him what his motives were when making pet sounds.
@truthasfineprint I dont know that song but during that tym of racism.... it was pretty easy for English people to get what they wanted hence "the bitting of the negros lyrics, tunes, songs"
but you know it wasnt just them bitting songs as well
The Beach Boys have written so many great original songs that so many other bands have been influenced by and covered. The Beach Boys rarely did covers. Personally I think they made this song better.
@94HEATH94 First of all ima woman.....Now the beach boys needed a song to make them selves, famous.....RIGHT?? Now why couldnt just started writing their songs in the first place instead of using somebody elses fame...... NO!! the beach boys did not make this song any better...... They put a disgrace to this song and themselves....By trying to make this song their own PPPLLEASSE!!! Original is always better..... didnt anynody tell you that????????? What planet are you from?
The ORIGINAL is always better. MOST artists aren't trying to do it better, but simply showing some respect for the original. ANYBODY who EVER says "I sound better than the guy who made it a hit" has got a few screws loose. That said, the BB's do an OUTSTANDING job on this tune and Frankie Lymon would HAVE to be proud.
Díana Ross also did a version of this song. Is that a theft too?
I'm glad MOST of the people here understand the meaning of COVER.
Beach Boys never claimed they wrote this one but they sure did "surfified" it in a delicate way, even though the original version AND Dianas version is great too
i really, really REALLY hope they did this as a cover, and didnt just steal this. because that would definitely cause me to lose all musical respect i ever had for them :(
@waailappe what do you mean what am i thinking. i said what the fuck i was thinking. i made a statement that i hope that they didnt steal that song because that would be a shitty move, clear enough for ya? now if its a cover well than awesome
dude....it is a cover. The Beach Boys never claimed that they wrote this song. All kinds of artists do covers of other people's songs. That doesn't mean they stole it. Even in the world of black music many motown artists did covers of Smokey Robinson's tunes. Sheesh...learn something about the music world before you spout off B.S.
this version is sorry they should've stole the song it from frankie and the teenagers of your going to steal the song put more soul in it or make it better not ruin it. many bands like them did this back in the day it was sorry they couldnt even make their own music. wow
"Back then it wasn't a cover, it was blatant theft."
That's one of the stupidest comments I've ever read. In the credits to this song on the album and B-side single that the Beach Boys released it, it says "Frankie Lymon/Morris Levy." It does not say "Brian Wilson" or "The Beach Boys" so royalties go to Lymon/Levy.
That is not theft. Frankie didn't even write the song. Jimmy Merchant of the Teenagers did, but Frankie got the lead, changed the melody, and got credit for it. Is that theft?
It was a cover, like many people have covered the song... it is supposed to be a compliment to the original artist. Besides, there is no question Brian gave the tune a much richer and in depth musical arrangement...
@shweet0161 I did not say you said he wrote it. It was a general comment after my comment directed at you. Read the replies throughout, some people think he wrote it--wrong. You need to dust up on your reading comprehension, if you ever even learned it.
@gtr82 I'm still unsure why you feel I should be banned then? I think my original statement was fair - that this cover is poor compared to the original - can we at least agree on that? I don't really think you should be criticising my comprehension - just be a little bit clearer next time.
Good point. I think they addressed the male female thing with the "Today" LP. That one had some real good songs for the girls but not losing the guys in the process. Good to my Baby-Please Let me Wonder-She knows me to well are favorites of my wife and me. The cover was also a good one to show the girls just how cool they could look in sweaters. Any way we are talking about just awesome albums that continue to bring us enjoyment yet today. Surfs up on Lake Michigan!!!
Some girls didnt like it when mike grew a beard [ the beach boys realized at some point that a lot of girls were in the audiance, murry wanted to fire mike because he said fuck on his microphone ] ,but your right side one of today is fast songs side 2 is slow slow songs .
I think all those people and groups are great. I look at the song as just another great song on a great album - Shut Down Vol. 2 - that contained Don't Worry Baby and The Warmth of the Sun. Try to find an album today that can claim such classics.
Agreed. That was my favorite album as a teenager back then. It personified the BBs and the time it came out. Pet Sounds represented the BBs and the new era. That album was totally under-rated and under-recognized. My only theory is that it had a very 'male' oriented cover reflecting cars. Very cool for guys, but maybe the females didn't respond to it.
The Four Seasons over the Beach Boys??!!. O well, we live in a democracy. The Beatles would have disagreed with you also. I remember reading a 'teen magazine' in school and the Beatles saying The Four Seasons stink.
its hard to put these great singers in order i love em all when i was little my dad would always play oldies so i love em!!! i wish i grew up in this time
It is Brian, Carl only sang lead once or twice up until Pet Sounds (1966) probably because he was so young and his voice had not truly developed. From Pet Sounds onward he sang most of the leads on their better known songs, God Only Knows, Good Vibrations, Darlin', I can Hear music etc.
This ain't nothin' compared to the new stereo mix on the the compilation coming out soon! The new stereo mix will blow you away! The mono mix is nice but, I only listen to it occasinally.
i wasnt familiar with Frankie Lymon or Valli until I made a beach boys channel on pandora and alot of Brians influences from the late 50s start popping up... as well as the Frankies... great vocal music... easy to see the relation in hindsight...
REAL Talent, when you hear the new stereo mix from the Beach boy's 2009 compilation, coming out soon, You will hear how more beautiful their version is. There is so much going on the song. The instrumentation is amazing and those vocals surrounding you blow your mind.
that's right caraphyllis. i hate 2 say it but it sounds like race is at hand here once again. i'm a black man and i like Frankie Lymon's version but i like this version too. the beach boys was the shit. damn, y can't we broaden our minds & think outside the box. try it sometime. you may like it SIXstDEVIL. well your name says it all anyway. i'm educated, have a profession and i still hang out in the streets but i'm not a racist. SIXsDEVIL y r u looking at this vid if you r a racist muddafucka?
Thank u, kickendit69 -- you are so right. Racism is stupid and evil, and music is one of the best ways to bring the HUMAN race together. I'm white and I listen to all kinds of music from all over the world, from Mexico to Mali. You don't have to speak the language to appreciate the sounds or admire the artistry. To me, music is like spirit -- universal, and color blind.
Oh yeah, and one other thing. In 1971 the Beach Boys added two talented South African musicians to the group, Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin. and made two excellent and underrated albums with that personnel line-up: So Tough and Holland. Also, the early Beach Boys were totally influenced by Chuck Berry and doo-wop. They focused on what mattered -- the music. Musicians should be, and usually are, role-models for respect among the races.
I remember this song as a kid in an earlier version but I like this version also..i grew up listening to the Beach Boys as a kid...loved their songs..this one has a neat sound to it...cool..
One of my favorite Beach Boys doo-wop covers. (I also love their version of "I'm So Young.") Why compare this version to Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers? That one is the original, and brilliant. This is Brian's version, and it's different. I love the trippy vocal break in the middle where they take the harmonies into the stratosphere -- so characteristic of the Beach Boys. Variety is the spice of life and music.
i love frankie's version better. The feeling you get from the song when he sings it just isn't there in this version... I love you frankie, from Tiesha
OF COURSE he's white! So what? Brian Wilson is a genius and he can cover any fucking song he wants. Yes, Frankie Lymon's version is the best. But it's an honor to be covered in this beautiful fashion, with this lovely production and these great harmonies. I mean honestly, if you want to improve racial conditions in this country, I think you can find a better battleground than the Beach Boys cover of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" which was done with love and which does honor to a great song.
I completely agree !!! Music doesn't belong to anybody white, black or red. Frankie Lymon did a great version and so did the Beach Boys by honoring with their own arrangement. To try and make a racial thing over this is completely stupid !!! And the word is spelled "steAl' just for future reference.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
u guys r so fuckin dumb who the fuck cares ...??? if its good its good..blacks dont own nothin..try n call ur selves gangstaaaZ WELLLLL im italian..and jus so u kno GANGSTER comes frm that so every1 copies every1 STFU!
no i think people who try to hard to sing this song ruins it. they harmonize like frankie lymon and the teenagers did it. and stupid people who say that they own the entertainment cause of their race are just ignorant.
I kinda don't like what happened back then when white people remade music and got all the credit for it. I mean, i know that this didn't happen to all of the time. But since technology hadn't advanced far enough for people to know...

Try to find an album today that can claim such classics.
nipsterstang 2 years ago 2

MrDennyman 2 years ago
i think frankie lymon and the teenagers sang this song much better the had soul
TheTemptationsFan 2 years ago
also when they sing the oooh wa part they sound a lot like the teenagers
Sodadrinker123 2 years ago
This is the best order:
1.Frankie
2.Little Anthony
3.Four Seasons
4.Diamonds
5.Beach Boys
6.Diana Ross
Sodadrinker123 2 years ago

I loved this song in the 60s. Another example of the BBs taking someone else's song and making it great. They always did that.
Brian is singing lead.
MrDennyman 2 years ago 6
No...this sounds terrible compaired to the original
kidkrash54 2 years ago
Who did the main vocals for this, I'm guessing Carl?
Brian and Carl sound so alike it's difficult to tell sometimes...
cleverandrew123 2 years ago
It is Brian, Carl only sang lead once or twice up until Pet Sounds (1966) probably because he was so young and his voice had not truly developed. From Pet Sounds onward he sang most of the leads on their better known songs, God Only Knows, Good Vibrations, Darlin', I can Hear music etc.

i wasnt familiar with Frankie Lymon or Valli until I made a beach boys channel on pandora and alot of Brians influences from the late 50s start popping up... as well as the Frankies... great vocal music... easy to see the relation in hindsight...

caraphyllis 3 years ago 17
that's right caraphyllis. i hate 2 say it but it sounds like race is at hand here once again. i'm a black man and i like Frankie Lymon's version but i like this version too. the beach boys was the shit. damn, y can't we broaden our minds & think outside the box. try it sometime. you may like it SIXstDEVIL. well your name says it all anyway. i'm educated, have a profession and i still hang out in the streets but i'm not a racist. SIXsDEVIL y r u looking at this vid if you r a racist muddafucka?
kickendit69 3 years ago 3
Thank u, kickendit69 -- you are so right. Racism is stupid and evil, and music is one of the best ways to bring the HUMAN race together. I'm white and I listen to all kinds of music from all over the world, from Mexico to Mali. You don't have to speak the language to appreciate the sounds or admire the artistry. To me, music is like spirit -- universal, and color blind.
caraphyllis 3 years ago 3
Oh yeah, and one other thing. In 1971 the Beach Boys added two talented South African musicians to the group, Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin. and made two excellent and underrated albums with that personnel line-up: So Tough and Holland. Also, the early Beach Boys were totally influenced by Chuck Berry and doo-wop. They focused on what mattered -- the music. Musicians should be, and usually are, role-models for respect among the races.
caraphyllis 3 years ago 3
I remember this song as a kid in an earlier version but I like this version also..i grew up listening to the Beach Boys as a kid...loved their songs..this one has a neat sound to it...cool..

One of my favorite Beach Boys doo-wop covers. (I also love their version of "I'm So Young.") Why compare this version to Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers? That one is the original, and brilliant. This is Brian's version, and it's different. I love the trippy vocal break in the middle where they take the harmonies into the stratosphere -- so characteristic of the Beach Boys. Variety is the spice of life and music.
caraphyllis 3 years ago 3
i love frankie's version better.

I mean honestly, if you want to improve racial conditions in this country, I think you can find a better battleground than the Beach Boys cover of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" which was done with love and which does honor to a great song.
sallygal7 3 years ago 4
I completely agree !!! Music doesn't belong to anybody white, black or red. Frankie Lymon did a great version and so did the Beach Boys by honoring with their own arrangement. To try and make a racial thing over this is completely stupid !!! And the word is spelled "steAl' just for future reference.
PEACE TO EVERYONE !!!
