Right down the line was my favourite track, i remember one of my elder sisters giving me the city to city album one Xmas + some of the classic tracks are forever printed on my mind. Great music from a really talented, down to earth guy, refreshing in today's "mostly" manufactured fake music world were talent is a word so easily used. R.I.P Gerry thanks for the great music mate.
Baker Street is a timeless classic first released on the radio, a smash hit, when I was 7 years old when my parents were going through hard times. "Baker STreet" along with "Right Down the line" are classic flash back songs to me.

Nicely done -- your sincerity, love and appreciation of this fine artist is evident.
Yeah, let's see, favorite(s) 'Stuck in the Middle' as I was just out of high school working at a radio station in Wisconsin. Then, years later, Baker Street hit the airwaves upon my arrival in San Diego. It was a great soundtrack to the ocean and gulls along PCH. Every time I hear it, anywhere I hear it, it says California.
Thank you for posting this. His classic "Get it right next time" was on radio today and I'd forgotten just how brilliant and effortless a vocalist he was. Wrote some real class tunes and very much under-rated in his living years. RIP Gerry Rafferty, Legend.
He was a true artist. He seen the music industry as it is, a machine that chews up artists and spits out the bones. He is one of my favorite song writers, I love Matties Rag
Done very tastefully, Gerry never truely got the recognition he deserved. A great singer, songwriter. So sad. Only good thing is the music will last forever.
This really bites. Gerry was by far one of my best artists. He struggled with alcoholism for many years. But hi's voice was incredible. He will be missed and there will never be anybody who will ever come that close in my book. R.I.P Gerald Rafferty [1947-2010.}
A lovely tribute, many thanks.I have been a great fan from the start and continue to be amazed that the musical content of his work has not dated at all. There is however a melancholic theme running through much of his music which I guess reflects his life. My personal favourite is the beautiful 'Don't Speak Of My Heart' from On A Wing And A Prayer. RIP at last Gerry
Chipping Norton Studios was the base for the wonderful Night Owl Album. I remember playing the beautifully produced at high volume with Rafferty's voice crisp and clear as a daisy. I remember 'Get It Right Next Time' in particular. Talent and tragedy side by side once again. A first class musician and a legend.
My favorite song by Gerry will be and always be Baker Street. The great lyrics, mellow singing, and that great sax grabbed at me when I heard it for the first time I believe it was late 1977 or ealy 1978 I give my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans. May his music never die!
My introduction to Gerry Rafferty's music was back in 1974 and his album "Can I Have My Money Back". It is this album that has my favourite Rafferty song "The Long Way Round"... a brilliant song!
Every time a Gerry Rafferty song would come on,I'd smile and reflect on certain memories from times gone by.Namely highschool. His music has a very"personal"effect on me.Baker Street is very moving but my personal favorite is "Home And Dry".Always feel like I'm soaring and going home kind of thing.Very tranquil beautiful son.RIP Gerry.
If you are like me, the more your hear of Gerry's music...the more you want. The more you appreciate his unique voice. Also, you realize the loss of a super-great talent which makes me very sad. We still have his recordings. My big regret is that I I never got to meet him persoanlly. I feel I know him though, through his work. - John Anthony Miller, Ventura, CA. USA.
Gerry actually wrote to me 2 years ago regarding a comment I left on a video here on YouTube. I still have the email and I will never delete it. These are the things that remind me how cool the internet can be and how close we all really are these days.
Superb hour long TV special "Gerry Rafferty - Right Down The Line" aired over here the other night on BBC2 Scotland. Featured contributions from many of the talented musicians Gerry worked with thru the years as well as his daughter Martha and brother Jim amongst others. Sad at the end though when Billy Connolly choked up when remembering the last coversation they both had shortly before he passed away.
My favorite is Dont speak of my heart, but best of all as i am the same age as Jerry has to be the Humblebums Shoe shine boy. So Scotland has lost another wonderful son. It makes me very sad. God bless Jerry and RIP .
I had bought "Right Down the Line" and "Baker Street" 45RPM's back when I was a kid, 13 yrs old and those were great songs. That is so sad he is dead at 63. RIP
This really caught me by surprise too. I live out in the jungle in The Philippines and don't see much news but wow! STAR is definitely my favourite tune. Heard it about 2AM in Tokyo the first time. Been a fave ever since. RIP
God, I'm still reeling from the loss of this man. I loved him with Stealers Wheel when I was about 14-15. Stuck in the Middle and Star of course were dear to me. Baker Street was smoking the airwaves during my senior week after graduation at Ocean City MD in June of 1978. I had no idea of the pain he suffered back then. God Bless him, Martha, and the rest of his family/friends. Wish I could have met him.
I have been a fan ever since Baker Street and I was devastated when I heard he had passed away! What an incredible artist. He touched nerves other artists couldn't even get near! Too many great songs to mention ..... but one of my favourites is Don't Speak of My Heart. I remember the first time i heard it ....it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end!! R.I.P. Gerry. Your songs will last for generations!
Baker Street, Right Down the Line, The Ark, Stuck in the Middle With You. To all Your familly, to all who loves You and for All the Ones Who You Love, the body must pass, but Art will last Forever, because it came from the Soul. My love and respect for You, Gerry. Gonzalo, from Chile.
rip as an earlier post said, "You were the voice of my youth" I think I lived Baker Street a couple of times in a few different places and dreamed about a man that would sing Right on Down the Line to me and mean it. gonna miss you Gerry
muito legal teu video me amarrei no seu belo trabalho vc é diferente de muitos que conheço no youtube sei lá talves na propria midea não consegue atrair ninguem mais vc tem uma cabeça muito legal parabens
Me too, my father who is now 66 listened to him often and my mother and him shared baker st and right down the line in their relationship toward how they felt about one another beautiful lyrics and I believe really speaks of love and understanding truly good music
i liked baker street, right down the line, stuck in the middle with you. i think that his music will stand the test of time. i have for many years truely enjoyed gerry's music. he was realy cool
me and my wife of 40 years both adored gerrys msic and especially his lyrics for me there is only right down the linebecause these words were writen for me and my wife and it will be played at my own funeral ( not to soon though).
City to City had four incredible songs and it is very difficult for me to pick a favorite. The Ark, Baker Street, Right Down the Line and Whatever's Written in Your Heart all nearly bring me to tears with the way Gerry's voice emotes. I can only hope that he and Brad Delp are making beautiful music together in heaven. Both died far too young as a result of personal demons.
@Debbajoe, Actually, Gerry had a very well documented alcohol addiction which can be directly contributed to his premature passing.
Gerry had one of the best voices to ever hit the airwaves. It's unfortunate that, as a result of his own reticence for the spotlight, he isn't better known. He didn't like fame and didn't seek it. His music is touching, evocative andf thoughtful. Gerry, you will be greatly missed.
My favorite song by Gerry was Right down the Line. I will always remember Gerrry for the very fine singer and song writer he was.. . Kudo's to you for the fine video, you being a youngster who apprecicated Gerry for hiscontribution to music. An icnon gone but not forgotten!
Baker Street will always have special meaning for me, as the first time that I heard it, I was having sex with two women for the first time. As special of a moment that it was for me, I had to stop and listen when it came on the radio. The sax part just grabs ahold of you and doesn't let go. Eventually, the girls wrestled me back under their spell and did some very nice things to me that evening.
I especially like like "Whatever's written in your Heart", been covering it in my own act since 1978 Great chord progression, meaningful lyrics, his understated unique voice, summer of 78 was a big time for me, and WWIYH and Baker St. are always part of the soundtrack. Thanks Gerry!
To innercirclemusic, LOVE and PEACE, Gerry Rafferty ruled. He is a star in Heaven now, amonst many other stars. That is our final resting place.Everybody's a star.
Gerry Rafferty, what a legend! "Baker Street" & other hits are such a strong part of my musical consciousness. Growing up in Cape Town, South Africa in the 70s, songs like this formed the soundtrack to our lives. Like all other kids bonding around great songs, I'd play air sax & guitar & the songs we'd play to were the likes of "Baker Street". As soon as we had money, we'd buy "City to City" & play it til the vinyl cracked. Memories forever. Thanks, respect & love to Gerry Rafferty. RIP friend.
I will be honest..hadnt thought about rafferty in a couple years..weird thing is..since christmas..been thinking about baker st. have always loved the song..with my 40th birthday just passing on 01 25 71..been nastalgic..to find gerry died..rip
Really sad news. tremendously talented guy and beautiful voice. Rally reminds me of another singer who left this world too soon due to battling demons of alcohol, Harry Nilsson who had lots of hits such as "without you" and others and was also British I believe. I never get tired of listening to the Sax Riff on "Baker's street" and hearing his voice on "Right down the line" and others. Smooth, vibrato-less vocals that just engulf the listener. Rest in Peace Gerry.
"Right Down the Line" is one of my top favorite songs--it's so beautiful. I've always liked "Baker Street". I've more recently appreciated "Home and Dry" and "Get it Right Next Time". I'm only just discovering the rest of his music, like "Moonlight and Gold". I'll definitely be listening to the rest of his work as some of it 's as good as Lennon-McCartney compostions. I never get tired of "Right Down the Line".
I heard "Baker Street" on the airplane's audio in Summer 1979 and I'll never forget it as I was coming home from visiting my boyfriend in West Germany. I felt like I should break up with him, as I watched the sun rising on the horizon, and I thought along with the song, "When you wake up it's a new morning. Sun is shining, it's a new morning and you're going, you're going home". It felt good to make that decision. So, Gerry's song had personal significance to me.
I just want to say, I'm from the same town as Gerry i have stayed there all my life and i have listened to his music all my life, because my mum use to go out with him when they where in school. She played his songs all the time (still does). The best songs Gerry has done?? All of them, the ones that stick out for me are, right down the line, get it right next time, baker street, the garden of england, night owl and many more. The guy was a legand, up there with Elvis and Lennon. RIP Gerry X
First of all, let me say, "Very well stated, and spoken" about Gerry, just a great songwriter, musician, and man. "Baker Street" seemed to me, to be a kind of autobiography about him. He seemed lonely, and maybe had some demons to deal with. "Right down the Line", just such a romantic song, a beautiful song by an awesome artist! R.I.P. Gerry, I 'm sure you're jammin' with all the other great artists in heaven about now, so you're o.k. Joe
So many great songs, but I think "Family Tree" is what I'll mention now. Gerry's longing for unselfish love and acceptance comes through so clearly. His spiritual aspirations were strong, but not as strong as his self-doubt and his alcohol abuse - a tragedy of a life, but a musical legacy that transcends it.
Whatever's Written in Your Heart has to be one of the greatest musical achievements of the modern age. Gerry was a musical genius for sure. He didn't like being a star and stayed away from the spotlight over the years and kept to himself. There are few musicians who have the ability to create music at the level of quality that Gerry could create music. He will be so sorely missed by all of us who loved, lived, and will continue to cherish this incredible man and his music.
Favourite song is "Long Way Round". Gerry should be inducted into hall of fame for Baker st alone. His golden period of City to City, Night Owl and Snakes and Ladders should be a benchmark for all songwriters
Dude! Thanks so much for this. GF was such a sad figure in the end, but was an incredible writer, touching so many hearts. He was never lauded as he should have been. The Ark is my fave, followed closely by Baker Street and days Gone Down. It's so hard to pick...I've never heard anything of his I didn' like. We'll miss him. Hey Gerry, The sun is shining, and you've gone home.
Was listening to Don't Close The Door off Snakes & Ladders yesterday, i'd forgotten what a fine song it was with great slide guitar work. Also Take The Money and Run off Night Owl and the list goes on.............................................
Gerry Rafferty should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I was Shocked to here of Gerrys Death. I have Bought All of his Albums. He Had a VOICE that will Never Ever be Replaced.
Has anyone heard of a reaction in interview from Gerry's one time partner in Stealer's Wheel Joe Egan, or indeed any info whatsoever about Egan's current activities and whereabouts? When John Lennon died I recall Paul was harrassed by the press and came out with his much criticized "It's a drag" comment. I know Stealer's weren't quite on the same level of famousness as the fabs but it would be nice to hear (and see) something of Gerry's erstwhile musical partner.
Would have to be one part of "Waiting for the Day", where he sings "Water of life / Pour your light down on me." Otherwise, the moody sleekness of "Get It Right Next Time." And these are all after "Baker Street," of course.....
Such a wonderful singer/songwriter. He will sadly be missed by many. He also had one of those unmistakable voices, as soon as you heard it you knew who it was. Such a vast library of music to choose from, but if I had to choose a couple, they would be "Wise As The Serpant" , and "Waters of Forgetfulness" . I am now 41 years old, and my father introduced me to Gerrys music, and I will now carry on the tradition and introduce my young son to Gerrys music. Rest peacefully Gerry - Thanks.
Nice respectful tribute, cheers for posting. So hard for me to choose a favourite song from his quality catalogue. Obviously Baker Street is an alltime classic with it's memorable lyrics, soaring sax and brilliant lead guitar solo but songs like Get It Right Next Time (it's controlled exhuberance) and Night Owl were just as powerful imo. His first solo album from '71 is an often, overlooked forgotten gem full of great folky pop tunes. It's Easy To Talk is one of my faves from his later work.
I have memories of my mom singing stuck in the middle with you. She loved that song. I was a kid back then so Gerry Rafferty's music has a lot of sentimental value to me. You will be missed Gerry.
Like all the previous messages left,my world is also a lot colder today after the passing of this songwriting Genius, and I mean that in every sense of the word! He may of left this realm but that`s only his physical form, his spirit and songs will live on forever!
I'm very sad to hear of Gerry's death.I have all his CDs.I had the privilege of seeing him perform live at Brighton's Dome in 1993,a night I shall never forget. My condolences to his friends and family.
Nightowl from the album of the same name and Don't Close The Door from Snakes and Ladders are two of my favourites.
Gerry Rafferty was the finest self-harmoniser that popular music has yet produced: the matchless purity and warmth of his vocals combined with a strong melodic sense and tonal taste to produce sparkling gems of recorded music. For what it's worth, my personal favourites include 'Night Owl', 'Don't Speak Of My Heart', 'Over My Head', 'The Girl's Got No Confidence' and 'Another World'.
So sad. I live near Tunbridge Wells and once saw Gerry in the 80s in a tiny pub in Frant, late afternoon, sitting on his own in an empty bar in front of a pint and a chaser. I was desperate to go tell him how much I adored his songs, melodys and voice but I think I didn't because just his being where he was meant he needed to be on his own. We have lost a thing of great beauty.
"Baker Street" and "Stuck In The Middle" are obviously very good but I'm quite partial to "So Bad Thinking," which I've got on a 1974 compilation album of Humblebums and solo stuff. I like this song so much I uploaded it. It has subtle vocals from Gerry including an overdubbed harmony - difficult to sing the parts and pick out the correct notes in my opinion. He obviously had a great ear. RIP Gerry.
My heart is broken. I loved his music so much, and am so sad his life was such a tragic story. North and South is my favourite album of all time (desert island disc for sure), but my very favourite song is The Way it Always Starts from Local Hero. RIP dear Gerry, the world has lost one of its truly great artists.
I was just listening to 'Right Down the Line' when I read my sister's post that Gerry had passed away. Your video is very informative, sensitive and caring. Thanks for posting - RIP Mr. Rafferty...it was you...right down the line.... See ya at the big Rock Concert in the sky... hugz and prayers to your family... Sweet Miss Sixty Seven
This is a sad day. I have his album's. My favorite song #1) The Ark-#2) Baker Street ect: I Pray for his Family & Friend's He was such a great singer his lyric's hei my heart cause I could feel his word's. I'm so sorry this happened. I do believe he is w/ God , he seemed like a presious Soul. God Bless You for posting this. God Bless Everyone who love Him & His Tune's.! RIP GERRY !*****
My favorite Rafferty song is "Home & Dry". It was on the plane's playlist during my last flight home from Germany in 1985. The song really hit home for me at that point in my life. Having just spent 18 months on the East-West German border serving in the US Army, home and dry was exactly where I wanted to be.
Your music will live on forever & you enriched our lives with your unique sounds. It is our loss that many of your fans never got to see you perform live and its only through the wonders of modern technology that we can be reminded of your accomplishments. Many thanks, Michael
have most of his stuff on wax ! my fave song is probably "her father never liked me anyway" , just a great little ballad. his music to me is very nostalgic & really takes me back every listen. RIP bro
Listen carefully to words from Mr. Rafferty's song 'The Ark'. He is now 'sailing out on that journey that takes us on our way.' RIP Gerry and thank you for the music.
@sweetmisssixtyseven Kind of you to reply... thanks so much. Re-reading my own words and hearing those lyrics in my mind, mixed with your supportive words, has finally brought some needed tears to my eyes.
Among my favorites are "Good Intentions" (Sleepwalking-1982), "The Garden Of England" (Snakes and Ladders-1980) and "Moonlight and Gold" (North and South-1988). His presence affected nearly every aspect of my life. I can't say that of any other artist. Very sad. x
City To City is one of my all time favorite albums. Every song is a gem, his voice is gorgeous. " Whatever's Written in your Heart" has to be my favorite. It's a beautiful, beautiful song. He can teach it to the angels now. RIP, Gerry.
Very underrated but extremely talented. Even though I'm only 17 I feel like Gerry has been played a major role in my music and how I approached music.
How many of you can say that your a teenager who likes Gerry's music?
A very good songwriter. Think about how many times you've heard the sax solo of "Baker Street" or the slide guitar of "Stuck in the Middle". These are iconic sounds. His voice was distinct, yet understated. He was a true talent and a real musician. May he rest in peace.
I am so sad. My late hubby and I fell in love to listening to all of Gerry's songs. I still listen and cry. May he rest in peace. Too many songs to list and I loved them all.
I think my choice of favourite song would be influenced too much by the news of Gerry's passing. At the moment I have to go with The Ark, Stealin' Time, or Whatever's Written in Your Heart, but there's just TOO many to mention. R.I.P. Gerry.
Remember Gerry and all his great music from way back in the early 70's like it was literally yesterday and he's only 3 yrs. older than me. Youth---gone now. One of his best: Right Down The Line. Baker Street another great and of course Stuck In The Middle with You in the Steelers Wheel days among others. Great tribute and posting! RIP--Gerry.
This news has had me in tears tonight, I've loved his voice and his songs all the way back to Humblebums days. Some of his songs have been milestones along the way for me.
Been so sad to hear of his recent poor health, but this day had been coming a long time. Hopefully people who only really knew Gerry for 2 songs will now check out some of the magnificent songs he wrote. He never knew how good he was. My favourite song is The Right Moment from his "Sleepwalking" album. Sleep well Gerry x
@rockgod52 The Right Moment is my favourite too, such an insightful song & so meaningful to me. So sad how his life turned out. He left us so much wonderful music. x
He was such an ifluence on my music back in the late 70's. His smooth laid back pop rock sounds were fresh and he recorded so many great songs, I picked up all his albums and cds as I could find them. Very sad he ended his life stuggling with the booze but his music and songs live on. Favorites so many to choose Loved the City to City, NighOwl collections and many songs mixed over the years (Right on down the line) sad loss R I P
I am so sad to hear of Gerry's passing. Been a fan since 77'. Probably my favorite of his is one of his more recent recordings..."Another World"--the version from the "Life Goes On" CD.
Ahhhh sad! Just heard about his death on National Public Radio. I turned it up when I heard "Stuck in the Middle w You" only to hear them announce his passing. 63 is pretty young! His hits like "Baker Street" & others are permanent, haunting, nostalgic features & fixtures in my memory. Didn't know he was so troubled & a recluse, but not entirely surprised : ...Well, it seems to be part of the package of Genius!
Thank you for doing this in honour of this songwriter - my favouite track is Baker Street, I was around 8 years old then and it was one of my dad's favourites along with Stuck in the Middle with You - my dad passed away when i was 12 - sad that he died so young and I am sad to see the musicians he loved are leaving us too.
I followed Gerry's career for almost forty years, and this is a sad loss of a wonderful talent, as good, if not better, a songwriter as Lennon or mcCartney. My favourite Gerry song is The Right Moment. RIP Gerry Rafferty.
Oh man I was just starting to listen to some of his old songs again, I like his song Right Down The Line I listen to it a lot. Lot of good people are passing away it seems, Many of them too soon, RIP Gerry Rafferty
GARY MOORE WAS A FRIEND OF MINE , WE SUFFERED FROM THE SAME ISSUES WITH OUR LIVERS ! THE GUY FROM GLASGOW IS A TRUE ASSHOLE , GARY WOULD BE ASHAMED TO HEAR A SCOT SPEAKING IN THAT MANNER ..

RIP friend.

Janicemaxwell 1 year ago

His spiritual aspirations were strong, but not as strong as his self-doubt and his alcohol abuse - a tragedy of a life, but a musical legacy that transcends it.
toddthedrysocket 1 year ago
Whatever's Written in Your Heart has to be one of the greatest musical achievements of the modern age. Gerry was a musical genius for sure. He didn't like being a star and stayed away from the spotlight over the years and kept to himself. There are few musicians who have the ability to create music at the level of quality that Gerry could create music. He will be so sorely missed by all of us who loved, lived, and will continue to cherish this incredible man and his music.

RIP Gerry.

I followed Gerry's career for almost forty years, and this is a sad loss of a wonderful talent, as good, if not better, a songwriter as Lennon or mcCartney. My favourite Gerry song is The Right Moment. RIP Gerry Rafferty.
