And Michelle Kwan certainly didn't go to Torino for the pasta; she wanted a gold medal, man! She wanted it so badly, she was literally ready to bust a gut to get it!
I love seeing this without commentary. I especially love the spiral sequence. Everything in this program just fits so perfectly and Michelle's execution is flawless.
kwan is good. but i think mao is the best female skater ever!! mao is much softer and higher jumper!! i think mao will be a goldmedalist at the olympic game
The BEST F-ING FEMALE Skater of all time, and we all know it.... She is FABULOUS!!!!!! She is like a Beethoven of figure skating...a talent that comes along every hundred or so years (if ever again).
violayan, where did you get this video? I don't recognize the camera angles. It's a nice, new perspective.
Anyways, I'm glad the 6.0-scoring system was still in place then. The new scoring system would have ruined it. She would've had to do faster (but slow-traveling) footwork like a caffeine addict and switch positions and edges on those spins, and you'd forget that she's interpreting the music.
LOL "like a caffeine addict"...I agree, besides a few exceptions, most of the footwork sequences and spins under the new scoring system are borderline psychotic lol
I agree that the new scoring system would have ruined this. I'm of two minds about it, though. The new system does force skaters to take every element seriously. No more breezing through the spiral and footwork sequences with half-assed moves. On the other hand, the new footwork takes forever and often isn't very attractive. Plus I miss seeing the judges' individual scores. Now all we see is totals.
The Code of Points has made the footwork much more complicated. Skaters pack as many different movements and turns into the sequences to rack up points. More content, less beauty. The skater doesn't travel so fast across the ice anymore. Kwan wouldn't get much credit for this footwork sequence under the new system. It would be considered too simple.
@dylanvalente Yep, this footwork would be way to simple...COP would have saw right through that without a doubt. Under the 6 system, Kwan could get away with just about everything...including butt prints. Simple and safe Kwan is here...nice, clean skating from Kwan here but I thought Tara was the clear winner of the short program.
@allenglandlawns Michelle Kwan's combo, double axel, spins, footwork and choreography were vastly superior to Tara's in the short program. This Rach SP is a flat out masterpiece. Tara's was mediocre in comparison. NO short program under COP by a female can even come close to this work of art. COP destroyed the artistry of figure skating. Butt prints? Kwan landed 7 triples at this Olympics and had a perfect SP. She always had to skate her best to win. You must be thinking of Sasha Cohen...
@allenglandlawns Well if I recall correctly, Tara had a "smudgy" landing on the triple flip. Plus, she skated earlier. So in my books, Michelle and Tara were marked correctly in the short program. And I agree Lipinski won the long program, thus winning the gold medal. But seriously do we have to debate this time after time? I think we are showing disrespect to both athletes when arguing about this. :)
The most beautiful short program in the history of figure skating. The 3z/2t was amazing, the doble axel was so lyrical and the 3toe so musical. The choreography is just the most difficult and wonderfull i have ever seen. This girl right here changed the sport and made it beatiful again. Miss her!!
Nationals SP had the triple flip, and when she landed it, the look on her face made the difference between that performance and this one. Although both were just incredible.

@anubethc45 HA! She chokes when she isn't absolutely sure that she has the gold already around her neck.

She is a choker. She always choked in the Olympics.
You need three things to be considered a great athlete:
1: Tremendous athletic ability
2: Great skill
3: Mental toughness in the clutch
Michelle had the first two, but she always choked in the clutch. Quite sad, because she could have been one of the greatest athletes of all time.
