The Karpathian mountains aren't a "Russian area" per se. But it is a fact that they are less ethnically Ukrainian, less nationalistic and far more Russified than Galicia Western Ukraine (which makes sense because Zakarpattya's history differs greatly). I lived in Dubove for two years, which had a surprisingly large Russian minority. Another case in point: 67% voted for Yushchenko in 2004, whereas he won the rest of the Western oblasts with 90-95% of the vote.

No reason to further speculate. It is Chom, which is a shortened version of "Chomu?" [why?] which has been mentioned previously. Chom is very common in many Western-Ukrainian songs, and comes from the dialects in that area (zakarpattya). I at least can name 3 other songs off the top of my head that use chom as an abbreviated Chomu. This is not even a contest. And tsyom? Should be spelt tsyom. Kiss sounds nothing like chom. If you say chom to say kiss, please stop and do not teach your children.
