Even though the're a british band ,this song has a lot of southern rock flare to it;it'll be goin' on my next compilation C.D. I heard it on "Relics"; a radio program in Lou.KY (91.9 WFPK).
This is great. Dave singing! Plus: this may be the only footage where I can actually hear Ray's telecaster. He must actually be playing!...with the volume up and everything. Although there's plenty of 70s footage where Ray appears to be playing, I'm never convinced that it 's part of what I'm hearing(other than the opening part of Lola of course).
They're both singin that bridge like 2 lead vocal parts, not really giving a fuck if they blend rhythmically, but it does as a result of their singin from the soul, they come together accidentaly which is a surprise/thrill
Ray Davies is a special talent, friends. the balls with which he sings that 2nd chorus and bridge - the 'pained' expression. Blunt force comin outa that boy. That bridge may be the best in the era
what nice days it must have been when music like this was what a girl like that was living by...now its facebook bumper sticker logic and music that's just as deep
I saw the Who live at Masonic Auditorium in Detroit 1980, saw the Stones three times, Floyd twice...also saw the KINKS at Cobo Arena in the "D" 1984. The crowd stood on their chairs (EVERYONE!) from the first note played to the last. They (and my babe and me) were swept up by the energy of this band and their enthusiasm...not to mention the QUALITY of the performance. Best concert I ever attended!!!
With all due respect to those below who have mentioned that Dave is singing lead, it seems perfectly clear to me visually as well as verbally, in the video, that Ray is singing lead with Dave doing a briliant job of hitting some/all very high notes, as he harmonizes with Ray during the chorus.
@teechef I'm a rabid Kinks fan but for the best song it's a toss up between Eduacation and No More Looking Back off the School Boy's in Disgrace album. That's not to take away from this song or Face in the Crowd off Soap Opera. But that's just one man's opinon. Peace out.....
Nothing wrong with confusion, indeed. The kinks had an album called "State of Confusion". Give it a listen and it might confuse you more or unconfuse you, but either way it's great Kinks music. Enjoy.

@GaryZeppelin1 ... I'll bet jimmybakersfriend, is a candlestick maker, and I would wager, that they burn their wicks on both ends... @ the same time... lol
To answer popegeorgeringo, who knows? Ray sings lead on this song on the "Sleepwalker" album, and Dave does NOT sing this song as well as Ray can/does. With their intense rivalry and frequent quarreling, it's possible that Ray "gave in" a bit on singing lead. It is a well known fact that Dave craved to sing lead vocals more often.
Dave sings lead vocals on this song, Professor...At least you got the album correct, but it is a well-known fact that Dave is one of the best background vocalists in Rock History and has enough of his own "Kinks" songs to make 3 solo LPs...
Dave and Ray have great harmonies but I do like Ray's lead more on Juke Box than Dave's. Dave singing lead in this version of Juke Box is a mystery but it is a great tune and Dave and Ray are the best.
Fantastic to see the Kinks in such good form in 1977. The girl who listens to the jukebox must have liked to "I'm so glad" by Cream/Skip James. And maybe a bit of "I've got the music in me" . Given that this is seventies, I'm not surprised that the Davies bros were influenced by other things in their orbit. Dave has possibly been listening to Lynard Skynard too. Why not. It's still very much the Kinks. Doing their thing.
Now this is the business! Great guitar work all around and dual lead vocals. Dave's P90 lead tone is stellar. Ray's Tele tone is bright and springy. Excellent song.
I really dig the way that Ray transposes the second verse from the way that the record goes; the "I don't know what to do..." is really a GREAT play on the original melody.
On the record the line goes " Every guy would do his best to try to put that music out of her head." The melody is the same as the in the first verse. On this live performance, the melody and the lyrics are different; it is syncopated. You'll have to check it out for yourself. Enjoy!
I love how Dave especially gets into this song - he's in "a world of his own." And I love how his and Ray's vocals sometimes track each other an octave apart, sometimes harmonize. And I love Dave's guitar solo. Oh heck, I love EVERYTHING about this song!
The cap that ray is wearing has a picture of a pig with headphones and shades on. This was a logo for WABX in Detroit in the mid to late 70's. I believe it was also the logo for WABX;s sister station in St. Louis. Can anyone actualy read what it says on his cap above and below the pig.
My cap says ( above the pig ) WABX 99, then ( below the pig ) real rock radio.
It says KSHE 95. That logo was originally done for the band, "Bloodwyn Pig" I grew up in St. Louis and the radio station KSHE 95 used it as their logo. I still have a patch, a belt buckle. I was unaware of the sister station in Detroit. KSHE, I believe still uses it, but, without the joint in the mouth. Sadly, it is now just a regular corporate station like all the others(crap) . It's cool to see Ray Davies wearing that cap!
Your saying that it says KSHE 95, that would be on the top, what does it say on the bot?I didn't know about the logo belonging to Blodwyn Pig , I do know that ABX started using it in the late 70's, at this point in time they had lost there non-comercial appeal, and were in it for the money. When ABX first came on the air in 67 they had an underground radio charm. I'm sure by the late 70's they were sold to a big corp, and by early 80's changed format. Now new call letters, playing country.
Yeah the bottom also says Real Rock Radio. Blodwyn Pig had the pig on the cover of their first album, Ahead Rings Out, released in '69. There is a pic of it on Wikipedia, search the album title. KSHE also had that "underground charm" early but also sold out in the late 70's . They still play rock and do still play the ""KSHE Klassics", but, are not what they once were.
When would you say that KSHE started using the pig. I recall that just before WABX started to use the pig they were using Rocky the X pup (which was totaly stupid. When did KSHE come on the air?
In this day of prefab, overmarketed, synthesized, pro toolized shit....this just fucking rules and blows the new age crap away...i've seen the kinks around 10 times and this is just great...never saw them this good
When you see a clip like this, as good as Ray Davies is, it's just unbelievable how good he and Dave are together. I don't know if it's ever possible they will work together again but, jeez, the four original Kinks are still alive and kicking. It would be amazing...
If I could bow down and thank you for posting this I would. Amazing! when you see and hear the Kinks everything and everyone else just pales in comparisson.
