Oh she can dance, dance very well. The movement that she is doing here is a deliberate style. It is for comic value. Her special with Pearl Bailey is worth the watch. It is kind of amazing to see her impersonate other people...one realizes how she created a "Carol" persona every bit as effective as "Marlyn" created a Norma Jean
I think she's great. She's like a novelty act on steroids. She's just one of those larger than life characters. I used to see her her from time to time in Manhattan. I am not joking, you can spot her from over a block away. She has real charisma. I find her to be very talented but in a hard to define way. I also find her to be quite smart, but in a very contorted way. I wonder why there is so little room on Broadway for these larger than life personalities these days.
I've read the original reviews of "Diamonds..." when Carol Channing became an overnight sensation in the 40's. This number had made her a legend. Wish I could go back in time and see her sing it then.
Carol is a Broadway Legend. She was the one who made Gentlemen Prefer Blonds and Hello Dolly huge hits. She has excellent comedic timing, and she was one of the original "funny voice" ladies. She's funny and makes people laugh. Her songs may not be pitch perfect, but the fact that they make people smile is part of their appeal. You go see Carol when you want to have an enjoyable evening.
@lou2u I see, well im 18 and from Sweden so maybe it isnt all that odd that I dont know of her (more then from Ryans impressions from whose line is it anyway :P) But Ill take you word for it, im sure shes a great entertainer
After I wrote my response to you I thought, "I should have mentioned how many entertainers impersonate her." LOL @ Ryan's impressions of her.
She's going to be 90 in 2011, so she's been around a long time. She's been impersonated since the 1960's (which is before my time as well) and been famous since the late 1940's.
You not knowing about her isn't odd at all. Actually, the thought of an 18 year old Swedish lad who's an expert on Carol Channing WOULD BE odd & hilarious to me:)
@leeinvegas same for me in Ft. Lauderdale - the audience very much including me adored her - I was very grateful for the opportunity - I love this clip - must have watched 20 times
Oh, this lady can sing and dance - in her own spectacular style! One of a kind. Watch that deadpan delivery - she is hilarious by doing very little. She is a wonderful actor who has something going on beneath the surface all the time.
she clearly can't sing or dance but whatever it is she does is mesmerizing in a "this isn't like anything i've ever seen" kind of way. so i'm guessing that's the appeal right?
@WikeddTung This is not the best performance to see why Miss Channing is so beloved. Although she was never a "great" singer, she can do far better than this. And usually her comic timing is impeccable.
She is absolutely crazy. But she could teach the rest of us a thing or two about job security. How many years did she do "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes?" You know, between "Hello, Dolly" revivals :-P
I closed my eyes and listened and Ryan Stiles sounds EXACTLY like her! lol

She's like Eartha Kitt - not necessarily the best voice, but one that's so unique it can be hilarious if used right.

Female entertainers of this era were never afraid to be laughed at when times were hard.

Carol, what drugs are you on..?

@DivaBehavior She meant fished as in "fishing for a compliment"...

@jemb2000 Good for you answering about Carol Channing....some people just don't get certain things : )
SHRINA17 1 year ago
@DivaBehavior she was "fishing" for the complement about her good punctuality.. it makes perfect sense to say that actually

Yeah I understood the phrase and all ... it's just that it's being said by Carol Channing in a burly fur coat.
