My dad was a CWO-2 and fire control chief at a Nike base in Maryland from 57-62> I remember riding the elevator with the missile.I was 6yos,it was cool.
Ya it's pretty cool riding that down with the missile on it. Oddly the stairs a short distance away were closed off so visitors could only view the below ground arms via the elevator.
wtf? nukular!!! whatever. isnt a gun a flame producing device? so the guy that shoots the guy thats smoking has to be shot with another flame producing device etc.,etc., until everybody is dead! sounds like the army to me. B.S. old guy stories.
I am wondering if they have any guide's who were in the National Guard? My dad was in the Guard and was the launcher supervisor at a site in Washigton State. Those guys knew their stuff and always had the best scores at "short notice annual practice and proberly would make better guides.
You would think so, since a missile defense system should have national guard written all over it instead of US Army but maybe that's so for other bases besides San Francisco.
Your last post was just dripping with sarcasm. My intent was not to insult the Army but give the Guard their due when they were given a base it was run 24/7. Their motto was "Sleep well tonight your National Guard is awake.
No sarcasm was intended...a missile base for national defense would ideally be under jurisdiction of one's national guard. This being the only nike base I've been to, for all I know other bases might be run by other branches of the military. I apologize for the misunderstanding.
Thanks.....This was a great video..I would like to visit someday..All the ones in the Seattle air defense are stores, Dentist offices and even a equestrian park.
After listening again, it sounds as though the guide is confusing many of the specs from the Sprint ABM missile and the Hercules... nothing alike. The Sprint was the only vehicle in history to break the sound barrier before leaving the silo. Hercules launched fast, but not that fast. There are launch videos on youtube that proove this. He is correct about the top speed, about 3.5mach. Missiles were also NEVER EVER EVER armed just sitting there. They had a separate arming plug device.
This guide needs to be a bit more educated on this particular missile (not to mention basic math). Marin to Sac in 17 seconds? The Hercules would have covered just under 10 miles in 17 seconds, hardly getting you across the bay, much less to Sac. If that were true, the missile would be doing roughly 22,000 mph. My father was an Army warhead specialist on this missile and tells me a large bit of what this guide says is BS. We both love the videos though, thanks for posting!

Welcome, my dad worked on missiles in NATO controlled Germany and agrees with your concerns for better guides.
