The East End wasn't 'white' in the 1920s. In the film you're seeing Jews and Eastern Europeans, who weren't considered white until many decades later.
In other words, what's white and what's not changes over time, according to a host of complex factors. Nostalgia for a time when everyone was one colour is a reactionary myth.

The East End wasn't 'white' in the 1920s. In the film you're seeing Jews and Eastern Europeans, who weren't considered white until many decades later.
In other words, what's white and what's not changes over time, according to a host of complex factors. Nostalgia for a time when everyone was one colour is a reactionary myth.
I'd rather celebrate the amazing diversity of today's cosmopolitan culture, than worry about the loss of 'my' culture, which wasn't homogenous to begin with.

Cultures only diversify through integration. There's no such thing as 'separate' cultures: all cultures are fed through migration, forced, economic or voluntary. What made the East End such a fascinating place in the 1920s - the birthplace of 20th century British working class radicalism, in fact - was its polyglot character: Jewish refugees, ex-colonials, Eastern European migrants. For an in-depth history of the era, I'd recommend Peter Ackroyd's "London: The Biography".
