  • woah.. you said important stuff like windows media 0:15

Do people actually use windows media format

  • Will this play blu-ray files?

  • @TELEVISIONARCHIVES only the movie (iso and folder formats), no menus

  • 1st time to see an unboxing video outside! Lolz but great video! Thanx dude!

  • ASIAN POWER?? THAT IS A REVIEW!!!

  • It seems like he's just stolen this from somewhere just to quickly do an unboxing video in the store car park or something xD

  • Hey is there any way seeing as this can be networked, that you can update its standard software? Im just asking because maybe WD will add more file support as time goes by?

  • thanks

  • Nice to do that outside!

  • theres a creeper behind you at the end of the review

  • turd

  • Хороший девайс, меня в нём пока что всё устраивает.

  • Хороший девайс, меня в нём пока что всё устраивает.

  • MKV's are out of sync when using the optical out on this player. WD to this date have still not fixed this issue. DO NOT buy thiis player if you plan on hooking it up to your home cinema amp using optical.

  • @uktech It works!

  • AHAHAHAHA ASIAN POWER

  • love it! apple tv has nothing on WD tv live!

  • What exactly this thing do?

  • lol funny unboxing

  • Is the WD TV still useable if you have wireless Internet?

  • @AlwonDomz yes.But I prefer with the cable.

  • Asian Power !! :D:D Damn straight!!

  • from the pricing on the website you're better off with the Live Plus model since it's the same price as just the Live model. so.. same price but plus gets you netflix support and such. good deal until western digital gets wise to their error

  • That was fantastic. Most unboxing vids drone on with blather. Your fast paced, clear speach was perfect. Everything I wanted to know. Thumbs Up.

  • hey mate....i bought that wd tv live but i dont have quality sound when i plug it to my home theater...it sound like mono...what can i do????optical thing my work?

  • CAN I USE THIS DEVICE INTO A SCART CONNECTION??

  • That guy was trying something. Cameramen save you. LOL.

  • that guy in the back totally video bombed you.

  • asian power FTW!

  • Woop Woop, local pervert approaching from 11 o'clock, wearing tired over stretched poo coloured tank top, with his hand firmly wedged in his pocket and a smile on his suspect face. Do not approach, chances of molestation accruing imminent ..

    Run, save yourself!

  • Very good movie thanks, the car on the back was trying to deteriorate your video, one question can you input SRT Subs on the movies MKV ? I mean separated files ?

  • great review! thanks.

  • Dammit, didn't realize it only has a wired network option: I'm totally wireless and far away from my router. Looks like I'll be investing in a bridge before I get one of these...

  • the best TV media player IMHO

  • HDMI cable .. =0

  • love it P. this is one of the best invention ever and the best money I ever spend

  • @WARGIRLWARGIRL

Yes same here.. Its NOT overkill for SD.. it works brilliantly well for that.. and it means I am all set for when I go HD possibly even before 2011, I'm jut waiting for the price of LED tvs to come down, and the end of the Korean conflict too.

  • It has an awful Interface. Too much wasted space. I wish these clowns would look at boxee or XMBC.

  • Muy buen reproductor el mejor me gusta mas este que el de asus

  • 1 (800) 275-4932 if your having probelms call and complain with your codec play back issues. WD need to Change the Codec pack to differnt one like Klite Codec pack computer version and put it on WD tv live

  • @camboy1132

Comparing this to a PC is like comparing a Human to a mouse. A mouse is great at finding cheese, and humans can also find cheese, but you can teach a Human math. You can get this to maybe find many different types of cheese, but it will never do math. Search out B-raD firmware for a truly awesome user experience. She (B-rad) should be working for WD by now.

  • nice, very well done, and fast+ informative___________ good job

  • this thing is rubbish. Networking is slow even on a wired connection. Utube function is not great as you can't even access alot of content due to utube tv device blocking. You would be far better with a media pc.

  • that remote looks so much like the one u get from netgear eva2000 n it does the same job, costs less

  • Best Media player thus far.

  • Ordered this just right now. Hope I get it soon!

  • wow... you look EXACTLY like my brother

  • Asian Power lol

  • nice. review. thax. ^^

  • wireless network fail

  • Asian Power, haha i lol'd :D

  • "Asian Power" lol...

  • Great work, can you use the WD with a projector? It does have a yellow composite thingy on the back as well. Please let me know cus I'm about to buy it but I won't if you can't use the projector..... Cheers.

  • the diference from the last video and that is the biggest improviment is the DTS decoder.

  • Try playing a fucking ripped DVD movie (VOB Files) Western Digital claims that it will play VOB files seamlessly but that is BULL SHIT! This device is such a piece of shit, that a black screen will freeze for about 9 seconds before it will play the next VOB file in sequence. I got a server with ripped DVD movies on it and I bought this device for my Home Theater only because on the fucking box it claimed to play VOB files which is DVD structure! What a piss off!

  • Wifiprojects> Why would you play VOBs? What a waste of space... DivX/MKV it.

  • @JustifyJustin: DVD quality is better. Some people can notice the difference of quality and I am one of those people. DivX and MKV degrade the picture quality. I can see the little tiny blocks in the picture and it pisses me off.

  • dvd isnt better than mkv

  • @racketer MKV is just a container, is not specific to any video format.

  • quality is better it has more frames

  • Hello Friend thank you for the tutorial, was a big help, I did not know it as the tv wd works but now already it, I am sure to buy one

  • THX !

  • nice video ;)

  • i wood bye it if i had 30 bucks also if you payer more that dumb but u need to get a popcorn hour or apple tv and how much did u pay ?

  • whos the jackass that was reving out

  • No hdmi cable?

  • RASCIST

  • nice unboxing vid! fast and complete!

lol at the guy standing behind you at the end :)

  • Next time pick a spot closer to a Harley Davidson convention.

  • does it support 5.1 audio (dolby, dts)?

  • Yes, the LIVE version supports the DTS

  • Yes.. support ;)

  • Apple TV can not play 1080p,this little guy can !

  • does this works on a pc monitor with hdmi input ?

  • why doesnt anyone (including WD) specify the capacity of this device?

does it use a laptop drive? SATA ?IDE? lots of information suspiciously missing.

  • It doesn't have a Hard drive in it. You plug in your own, or use network.

  • Comment removed

  • so the actual box has no drive at all and anything you want to watch has to be plugged in via usb or ethernet?

I hightly doubt usb can even handle HD

  • It works fine. I play HD videos off my external all the time. Plus, this is a highly reviewed product, nobody complains about the ability to play the videos, except for certain formats (RMVB, DVD iso), and it's mostly about the subtitles and menus for some files.

  • ASIAN POWER! every insert should be replaced to say so

  • I have tried both WD TV and CinemaTube. For my review, I will be comparing CinemaTube primarily with WD TV since these are the media players having similar features at similar prices. Despite WD TV is the most popular media player, CinemaTube wins and I will show you why. To my belief, there are no other media player at this price right now which can beat CinemaTube. And, this is a statement from an advanced user.

  • ASIAN POWER!!! haha 3:31

  • thanks for the post

  • What camcorder are you using??

  • Gotta ask, cus it's not clear anywhere, can you use any hard drive or does it have to be from the same company?

  • Reviews I've read say you can use any hard drive.

  • can i record my ps3 gameplay or my tv and stuff ? someone answer plz :|

  • No, this doesnt record, it only Playsback media

  • No HDMI cable? I'll wait for WD TV 3

  • hdmi cables are only like 3 dollars, come on now dont be a cheap ass

  • Wow where do you buy from? You must work for WD.

6 foot HDMI cables are still 15 bucks at Best Buy. 40 bucks for a good one.

  • There isn't relaly any such thing as a "good" HDMI cable. It's a digital signal, so if it works, it works, and there's no quality difference.

  • hey man, awesome review. Insightful and concise !!

Just a tiny question, provided I've searched the entire web for this by now - any GOOD, RECORDING, 1080p mkv-compatible player out there ?

    Thanks a lot.

  • @LinusTechTips I differ, a lot of the cheaper HDMI cables create noise on the TV during black scenes. I have two cheaper ones, and two expensive branded (Sony and Crest). However that is the only difference,

  • ??? uncommon issue ???

  • @LinusTechTips and if u jump on ebay u can grab um for 2 bucks a piece. i got at least 6 and they work just like the 40 dollar ones

  • @LinusTechTips

(minus how long it will take to be broken i think ;) )

  • @LinusTechTips agreed. PC world or Maximum PC id an article about cheap HDMI cables versus expensive ones and found no difference so don't be guilt tripped by an associate to pay an arm and leg for a cable. just buy a cheapie and if it's a bust then you're not out big bucks

  • @LinusTechTips yep, in ideal world, but if your cable fails to deliver the data devices send it again and again you will have lags.

  • From the shop, and is not THAT expensive.

  • @rayofminneapolis Monoprice(dot)com Way cheap, and as linus said. its digital signal so crappy cords work the same since the unit autocorrects errors in the signal anyway. at monoprice you can buy a 6ft cable for less than 2USD

  • Whether probably to connect it to the computer directly that this piece saw a hard disk pc, and assembled a picture on the TV?

  • will it work on tv or wat?

  • You're supposed to plug it into your TV with component/HDMI. That's the whole point of this device.

  • Works wirelessly as well via adapter.

  • anyone know if the Logitech Harmony has support for this unit?

  • will Western Digital Live work on TV...?

  • Oh and btw whts ur say : O!play vs WDTV LIVE ?

  • k im gonna get this once the price drops, thx for help. $129..way too high...

Around or below $100 is suitable :D

  • Are u sure it doesn't stream MKV ?

  • It supports MKV files under Network Shares, not using Media Servers feature.

  • What's the specific distinction between the two ?

eg. I have some mkv files on my pc (in just a folder) so if i share that folder with my network, would the WDTV live be able to play em ?

  • I've played MKV files via the network perfectly fine, I've played a MKV file that is 9GB, h264, with DTS and it played as if it was on the external drive.

  • hmm, i tried three different mkv files n they wouldnt stream over the network. i was only able to play mkv via external drive, directly. how do i do network shares vs media servers? is that the only way to play mkv streamed? thanks

  • Under the video section there are two options, "Media Servers" and "Network Shares", Network Shares access shared folders on your network, it doesn't have to go though a DLNA server like Windows Media Center so it has direct access to the files.

  • and this works while streaming through media server doesnt? also, can you fast forward n rewind while streaming mkv? on your wdtv you cannot stream via media server either, correct? sorry to ask so much but i returned the item and i wanna make sure before i rebuy. thanks

  • Only some Media Servers support MKV, can't stream those files unless you have a server that supports it. Every other file format works fine... I'd rather use network shares anyway.

  • hmm, i hadnt considered that. thanks, man. btw, have you tried the new cinematube? do they do the same thing?

  • I've never used cinematube, it seems the only advantage is a torrent downloader and RV ... but I don't use torrents or Real Video, so it doesn't matter to me. One other advantage is ISO DVD Menu Support, which I will never use.

  • true true. i wouldnt use those features either. it was selling for 99 though. unfortunately they have raised the price. i will get the wd again. thanks for your help.

  • I prefer the Fantec MM-FHDL.

  • DOESNT STREAM MKV FILES!!!!!

  • the most important part of it to me, does it support mkv softsubs! for the love of god say yes!

  • it support embed sub for mkv.

  • yes, but read other comment. doesnt stream mkv... :/

  • Thanks guys. I'm pretty much set on this.

Does it play ISO and BD rips?

  • Yes it does DTS downmixing. Check out my site for all the latest news about WDTV Live. iboum(dot)com

  • I NEED AN ANSWER ASAP!

Does this play DTS audio through HDMI? The WDTV didn't and had to plug in optical audio cable.

  • The original WDTV absolutely bitstreamed DTS through HDMI

  • Do you know how I can setup an audio for the WD LIVE HD TV and only a 23LCD Monitor? Don't have Optical device to play sound.

I have cables, but I don't see 3,5mm audio jack.

    PLease people, help

  • yes, i believe it now does dts, whereas original didnt, so you needed a capable receiver to do this for you with the old one. you should be fine.

  • I have my original WDTV hooked up via HDMI to my receiver and it played DTS fine. You just needed a receiver with a DTS decoder in order for it to work.

  • yeah, your receiver plays it, not the wdtv. the new one plays it; i.e., no receiver necessary.

  • Thank God - an American that can enunciate words.

  • Linus is Canadian.

  • That explains it!

  • LOl Asian Power :D

  • if only it did netflix too - i would buy it in a second

  • LOL @ 4:25 he is like"Ima steal his shit" =p

Linus is it possible for the videos to be widescreen on the camera?

  • love ur videos. keep it up mate!

  • love the shirt i say that qoute all the time

  • Great unboxing video, thanks.

  • asian power xD, , loooooooooooooooooooooooool

  • Booooooring

  • WOOO ASIAN POWER

  • how much are these?

  • great thanks

  • the guy at 4:25 was staring at you lol

  • lol @ the guy in the background at the end.

  • I think Linus has got a stalker ;D

  • linus i can only find monitors and Tvs that do 1080p but ive seen dvi and VGa cables that can do more then 1080p where do i get these higher res monitors??

  • newegg ......

i dont know what ur gona use it for

but for gaming and movies u dont need a screen higher than 1920x1080

ii should know i own many monitors including a 2560x1600 30 inch dell screen

  • ok What does this thing do

  • asian power BAHAHAHHAHA

  • asian power LOL

  • fucking go HD full 720 or full 1080

  • Asian Power omg youmade me laugh so hard

  • Back to the old camera huh.

  • Vroom Vroom

  • Think we could get a comparison video of WDTV Live vs Asus O!play?

  • ... It's an apple tv...

  • Except it costs a lot less

  • it's $150; the apple tv is $250 but has a 160 gb hard drive and a better interface/software. Their a tie price wise in my mind. It comes to personal preference

  • So for 250 you get a 160gb drive and a networked interface, etc.

For 150(list), (it's 130 at amazon, i got it for 110, and was on special for 100 last week) plus the cost of a drive (say 1tb for $100) you get a similar product, but with much more storage space, and, when you fill it up, you can just get another drive instead of either deleting things or getting a new device from apple.

  • u can swap drives on this too... but it's integration with itunes makes this instantly outstanding

  • xsonicbladex: Yeah but Apple TV only handles .MP4 format and this one handles DivX, AVI, MP4, etc. so it can handle more formats then Apple Tv the UI on WD is all right

  • It supports .m4v, .mp4, and .mov and anything using H.264

These days that's like 99.9999999% of all vids.

  • nice
