Socialized medicine in Canada works right up until you need something important ( like a new kidney ) and need to cross into the States. The problem in Canada is the waiting.
Canada has 10 different systems, for the 10 provinces. Each has the responsibility to provide health care and as long as they follow the 5 principles of universal health care established by the Federal government. It's up to the them to manage it all. Some are doing better than others, and some of the poorer ones are not doing as good. It's not perfect and some people sometimes have to wait but no one is left on the street, and if there is a real emergency, you will be treated.
"if there is a real emergency, you will be treated".. not so, there are lots of stories about people dieing while waiting months for surgery - but of course they're fine with that here - because it's equitable - i.e. the middle class and the poor have equal chances of dieing (the rich of course just go to the US).
and then there are strange stories about people being refused care and then dieing right outside the hospital.. like 2-3 of these in the last year or so (strange things happen when you're relying on peoples' 'goodness' to get service, instead of on their self-interest).
heh, i'm glad you asked... here in Alberta (the oil rich province) Canada, I pay $132 every 3 months in 'premiums' (lol, and you thought it was 'free'!). For a _very_ minor surgery I had to wait 8 months, and then they _botched_ it and I am now scarred for life.
The single payer system here pays doctors poorly (relatively) and actually has doctors' strikes (!!).. so most doctors move to the US (our infamous brain drain). The doctors that we have remaining tend to be an odd bunch, alot of foreign docters, a few strange Canadian ones - I had a weird male doctor come on to me once (and I'm a straight guy!), and I have a cousin with a similar story (basically she was stalked by her doctor). they also tend to act like they're doing you a favor.
