  • you are quite through :D

    GO TEACH DAMMIT

  • thank you very much. great, informative video

  • sooo. where is the counter shaft?

  • i would like to see a video on motorcycle clutches

  • what about transfer cases what do those do?

  • @crimson22s its only in 4x4 vehicles, it engages front drive shaft so you have four wheel drive

  • its called a counter shaft.... not an output shaft

  • @lolsalotful same thing... it goes out -.-

  • he sounds like he got asked a hundred times to do this

  • this guy would make a good teacher

  • if you guys think this is nuts...auto are crazy! lol props to the genius/crazy man to think that one up :P

  • fwd

  • That's not how it works it's what it does.....

  • I know virtually nothing about cars but the only part he would have to re-explain to me is the part where he talks about what happens physically when you shift gears.

  • this helped me understand a little more... i guess it would help if it were on a rear wheel drive vehicle... i tend to understand that a little more.

  • @whatchagondo45 It's basically the same on a real and a front wheel drive vehicle. But the differential is not within the gearbox on a rear wheel drive car. So if you watch this video. Just pretend that the differential isn't there

  • oh man this made it even more complicated

  • Great explanation.

  • is that a geo metro transmission xD

  • Ahhhhh... I see...

  • 43 people use automatic transmission

  • I'm sorry but try to repeat at 1:44

  • @sonyviva308 dude get a life

  • Clear as mud!

  • Thanks for the manual driving class.

  • OH OK I GET IT.............uh no i don't.

  • Looks complicated if no explain how it works. Thanks for your explanation.

  • I kinda understand this video but a little confused, probably because this is dealing with a car and the only experience i've had was with a friend's truck. But i see the similiar concepts. with the buds truck the transmission wasn't directly connected to the axle but rather the transmission went to a transfer case that then transferred power to the axle via a bar whose name i just can't remember right not

  • watch the video a few times and try to visualize how it functions. watching it once and saying "what the fuck?" is just you being ignorant

  • I remember the first time I seen an open transmission(Jaw hits ground and mind screams WTF!) This guy is awesome.. I can't believe I understand what he just said.. Everyone should thumbs up this video so others can learn..

  • i still dont get it

  • Its funny. in America (or so I've heard) there's an abundance of automatics.

Whilst, over here in England, pretty much everyone drives Manuals; and automatics are seen as old people's, or lazy-man's cars. ;D

Oh how 250 years can make a difference.

  • wow the americans have their 1st manuals!

  • WTF DID HE JUST SAY??

  • why havent i heared of this guy before?! .. why isn't he totally rich?! .. what the fuck!

  • i under stand i just dont know how wen u get to a point on one the other one moves

  • this guy should be teaching in a class room

  • Very informative, I expected something like "This does this if you do this and then this'll this only if you this but sometimes if you do this"

  • he's more intelligent than he looks lol

  • Man.. I was just thinking if I take a tranny out and somehow all those gears cam out of place... I would be in a world of hurt not knowing what to do lol

  • this and the clutch video make it seem like only manual trans have a clutch while automatics work in some completely different way

  • @stormthorgerson thats because an automatic does work in a completely different way

  • i swear this dude knows so much about cars. imma get him with me next time my car mechanic trys to bs me lol

  • I'm really trying here... but i'm a little lost. Then again, i'm trying to relate this to motorcycle tranny, so that might be contributing.

  • @londean111

I suggest moving on to another video. This video is fine if you already have some familiarity with the innards of a manual tranny in an automobile, but not some much if you're just diving in for the first time.

  • i had to watch it a few times to get it. i had no idea how it worked before this. hes good. just watch it 5 times.

  • What he should us is what happens when you crunch a gear, or to put it another way, what your gear box will look like after you let an American drive your car.

  • I love it that Americans think driving a manual is a novelty or something. In Europe we think driving an Auto is a novelty. My family has never once owned or bought an automatic car, to me it's not empowering or invigorating, it's just totally normal.

  • props to the smart ass people who invent these things... if the world had been filled with people like me wed still be riding chariots.

  • That is not a differential, it is the final drive, the differential consists of planetary and sun gears. That is not an axle, it is a driveshaft.

  • @sasrobinson first of all he is working on a Transaxle which is slightly different than a transmission. second, it is a differential, and lastly that is an axle not a driveshaft.

  • I just drove a stick for the first time yesterday, and have no mechanical training or experience unless you count K'nex and Erector sets. I understood everything he said with zero confusion. Two thumbs up, great explanation.

  • I thought it was a good explanation? If you just understand the absolute basics of how a car goes brooooommmmm you should get it..

  • Why are people saying they can drive a manual after this video. This video isn't teaching someone to drive stick, it's teaching you how a manual transmission works. There is a difference.

  • You lost me at manual transmission, that was within the first 4 seconds of the video.

  • i think the people who say this is complicated are probably very young...

  • @yovtobe this is nothing compared to an automatic transmission. It's so simple. Don't you think?

  • @lakers8888 hahah ohh man automatic transmissions give me a headache... they are amazingly complex... Give me standard any day...

  • go stickshift or go home...

  • Watching this video taught me how to drive a manual...OK, it helped a lot, but it didn't completely teach me.

  • TITS

  • wow!! perfect explanation!!

from which car the motor is? it's because i drew all the gearbox in a special software and its the same motor I used, so i'm very interested!!

  • EXCELLENT EXPLANATION!!

  • Thumbs up if you spent the whole video cringing because you thought the dude was going to get his fingers caught in the gears...

  • The reverse is just another gear wheel that comes between the two shafts thus reversing the rotational direction of the output shaft. The interesting thing is that the gears of the reverse and on some cars the 1st gear are right angled. Which, I think, makes harder the gear engage when machine is not stationary.

  • excellent job! you should do tutorial videos!

  • Second gear was broken!

  • does anyone know how the reverse works?

  • @HUSTLEBANE it has a idler wich changes direction of the primary shaft

  • hahaha reverse is cute :P

  • its pretty easy if you think about it got some gears that mesh with other sized gears that determin how much torque your going to have

  • i want to go into auto mechanics, but if this is how the average teacher teaches..im in trouble!

  • what.. what what...????

  • now I can drive a manuel. yay.

    ...not.

  • seems really complicated

  • Have you thought about doing dvd tutorials? Great job!

  • im gona have to watch this again

  • the input shafts goes into the shaft that connects the syncro to 5th gear which is up and the shaft that goes up goes down into the output shaft to a gear and moves the fork to a shaft to the input shaft to move this to linkage that holds this bolt on the shaft to make the car go... um THANKS DUDE , im going to take apart my tranny now

  • hey beavis, he said shaft

  • Comment removed

  • Dude knows a lot thats for sure.

  • trying to understand it on my motbike mechanic course and i cant get my head around it

  • so complicated.

  • your hot can u come work on my car

  • holes, shaft, nut! holy shieeet

  • the guy obviously knows what hes on about but his explanation is not as clear. on 1st watching this i was a bit cross eyed but after reading what people have put on these comments it all becomes A LOT clearer. nice to see some knowledgable input on the tube rather than the typical ' your moms a hoe' or '58 people who cant drive a manual didnt like this blah'.

  • THIS GUY IS FROM DA GETTHO,SO FUCKED UP

  • that was for a front wheel drive car, or a car which has the engine sitting over the top of the drive wheels... RWD front mounted engine cars are slightly different but incorporate the same basic principals...

  • english is not my first language but still i get what this guy is saying, i wonder how dumb are those people who don't get it or trying to make fun of him.

  • What i've learned from this video, is that i will never learn how that shit works. Thanks though.

  • Thumbs up if you had to pause the video to look up the meaning of the words: splines, clutch disc, selectors, shift forks, shifter linkage, synchro, and differential.

  • what a gettho explantion..

  • @Corey497

ghetto???? u are probably just too fucking retarded to understand it. Damn, how many times did they fucking drop during birth?!?!

  • I am a DIY mechanic in my driveway and I understood everything this guy said. Maybe instead of trashing this guy you should take it upon yourself to raise your education level and better yourself as a person instead of ripping this guy. I hope he does a bunch more of these videos I think they are great.

  • @SamBeckett12 i think what ClearSkyline meant was that he seems like such a good mechanic that it'd be a waste of a good mechanic for this one to be a teacher.

  • @gabriel1812 that and he did not explain the how the lever in turn selects gears, he simply pointed out what they were. who can fault him though, he is a car guy, we car guys often assume people can see things they don't when we are talking about them.

  • @SamBeckett12 agreed

  • @SamBeckett12 I had no idea about any of this and I can almost explain it to someone else now. I personally think the guy did a good job too....

  • @SamBeckett12 I am not car mechanic, in fact I don't even own the car, and I understand the basics on how the shift-gear works, so yeah for me this is a very good explanation.

  • i'll "dumb it down" for everyone.

the crankshaft in the engine spins, makes input shaft of tranny spin, which makes output shaft in tranny spin, which makes the differential spin, which spins the axel, which spins the wheel(s), which makes the car move.

there. now you know how a manual transmission works.

  • if I understood what he was talking about, I'd already know how a manual transmission works...

  • I understood... NOTHING!

This guy should just do his job and never make educational videos since he knows he's stuff, he's explaining it like that he's explaining to someone that already knows how it works!

  • @galatasarayfan67 lol yea im sure hes a good mechanic but he cant break it down for people who have no experience with cars can understand what he is talking about

  • @STeroidsnicca this video just covers the basics, all videos dont need the whole rocket science details to make a good video.

  • He might as well have said "blah blah blah gears, blah blah blah shaft, blah blah".

  • 1:44... OH yeah!!!

  • i dont get it. lolz

  • professional

  • Did he just say "splines"?

  • @boolykbol yes its the correct terminology for the toothed or geared surface of the inner wall of the hole.

  • dahm you all are losers. hes just giving a basic explanation stop hatin. i bet you people dnt know half the shit he does

  • all i heard was "blah blah blah and thats how a manual transmission works"

  • I think it takes more than 2:24 to adequately explain, let alone understand, how a manual transmission really works.

  • I love how every other sentence is pronounced aggressively.

"Inside the manual transmission, you have a cluster of gear sets,

    THAT DO ALL THE WORK!"

  • "When urine gear".

  • Gotta love how he used the word spline.

  • 2:14 snags his right index in gears lol

  • i didn't learn a thing. Except that this guy is horrible at teaching how a manual works.

  • @EaAddict360

He made it a bit too technical.

You might have to look up some of the terms he threw out.

  • @hsu912174 I did, makes since now =D

  • @EaAddict360 sense* whoops, I can't spell :P

  • at 1:12 listen to how he explains the gears. the bottom one is 1st and the top is 2nd.

  • Splined....splined.....splined....splines....

  • thats easy stuff, explain automatic transmissions :p

  • what?

  • im guessing this is a front engine front wheel drive. i think i understand but wouldn't a frint engine rear wheel drive be easier to explain

  • @bRiNgBaCkDa70s Yeah it's front wheel drive front engine, did you see the size of the rod going into the diff? With rear wheel drive your diff is all the way at the...rear...

  • good explain. nice work!

  • thats so cool!

  • Excellent video! Mechanics seems so clear now.

  • ?

    O.o

  • I think my tranny is messed up now.. I down shift it every race

  • umm... the cv shaft goes thru the hub, the hub.. goes thru the knuckle.......just sayin

  • so sabem comentar, deixem o homem trabalhar pá está bem explicado

  • That dude seems like an excellent mechanic. who should never consider going into the education field.

  • @ClearSkyline lol i understood about 90% of it.

  • Because this is over your head? I suppose if you were watching a video on quantum physics you'd be a little lost too. The guy is an excellent teacher. Admittedly you have to have some knowledge of mechanics to understand what he's talking about but that doesn't make him a poor educator. @ClearSkyline

  • @ClearSkyline hes not a teacher hes a mechanic lol

  • @ClearSkyline honestly that could have been more thorough.i agree but if you are 1/2 way mechanically inclined you will get what he is talking about quite easily. if one did not get that, they shouldn't be thinking about diy tranny repairs. i understand curiosity would be a factor in drawing views but honest how much would you have to dumb it down for one who is completely ignorant of auto repair. i've turned some wrenches and trust me some people you can not explain things to period.

  • It could be better explained via actual diagram so more people can understand. Good demonstration though.

  • I got a 94 nissan sentra with a 2.0 swap, its missing a 3rd gear . . . can I just replace the synchromesh for the 3rd gear or do I have to replace the tranny ?

  • this is also a TransAxle not necessarily a Manual Trans alone. it other cars with RWD it similar but not exactly like this.

  • this is a good video,i understand what your sayin but you shouldnt make the video like tis,i mean people who dont know nothing about this, wouldent have a clue as of what you talkin about.

  • Man Your are really good at mechanics! At last someone on youtube who tells something really useful !!!!

  • MANUAL TRANSMISSION ROCKS!

  • yup...didnt understand a thing.

  • @tiapon i'm with you bud that was wierd.

  • man, it looks like theres not much to go wrong inside a manuel, my automatic took a shit and i dont know what to do :/

  • Can you show us how a manual transmision works when a woman tries to use it?

I know what it sounds like, now lets see the carnage!

  • ok i think i noe how its works

  • Hey this is...this is...much smaller than I expected.... Call me ignorant but I thought the transmission would take up a quarter of the length of the car....

  • @taitai907 its probably a civic tranny.

  • @taitai907 me too haha

  • body work nd the mechanic buisness aint the same enymore..

  • wow. now i can dismantle and assemble a tranny! wtf!

  • shit is crazy sonn!!!!

  • stationary!

  • @SystemXpander i believe its missionary!!! =]

  • I don't get it.

  • im so immature hahaa , i couldnt help but to laugh every time he said shaft haha, pshh who em i kidding im not immature... im super highh!

  • Very, very good. Excellent!

  • It's just amazing that once apon a time, someone thought of this and built it. I respect actual thinkers of this Earth. @mike0930, I hear ya. I don't get that either.

  • There is a video on a MGB manual transmission that is much better.

It goes by the name: 04 MG gearbox, MGB

  • good thing he didn't become a teacher..

  • holy shit understood that..kinda niiceee

  • I still dont get it. i'm trying hard to, but its still going wizz in my head- i cant put all the info together. this guy clearly knows his stuff!

  • Man this guy knows allot about cars. He needs a raise!

  • mind boggling but very very cool

  • input shaft basically hooks up to crank and output shaft connects to axle which connects to wheel AND THIS IS JUST FWD, RWD WORKS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND DONT GET ME STARTED WITH AUTO TRANSSMISSIONS!!!!!!!!!!

  • Finally someone who have shown and explained it, so i could get it in the first place.

Most people just talk and use to much air, but he just made me smarter lol

    Great Video!

  • Give me stick-shift or give me death! I hate how supercars, sportscars and even some mid-range vehicles are now using these stupid flappy-paddle "Double clutch" transmissions. I say, the more mechanical and less electronic a car is, the better.

  • he probably makes good money that shop is his and its pretty bigg
