Just saw the new Star Trek movie. Am an original Trekker and he nailed the way thirtysomething McCoy should have been portrayed in the new Star Trek. I'm with Xxbelieve - he's gorgeous. Beyond his distracting good looks I could hear him getting the Southern accent right and all the personality quirks, etc. So now I have a lot of catching up to do - seeing Pathfinder and all his other films. And I'm also surprised, with Xxbelieve, that he's not better known. But he will be.

Karl is an exceptional and diversed actor. Still grounded and not fame oriented. It's nice to see an actor, American or Foreign in this day and age still humble a true to his roots. I hope to see more of him and hope he gets a Oscar worthy role. He reminds me of young Richard Chamberlain.

Most NZ actors based in Hollywood,lose their accents e.g. Martin Henderson,Anna Pacquin and Karl Urban just to name a few.I can't think of any who haven't.

Alot of the Aussie ones still manage to hold onto their accents though which is quite interesting.

Just because John Key recently dictated that we have something positive going on with the United States doesn't mean that the rest of New Zealand agrees.New Zealand is as anti-american as Australia and we have been for a while.remember we were kicked out of the ANZUS for opposing them.But thats going off topic , accents actually do change slightly when you spend a large period of time in another country, im sure the Aussie actors you refer to do not actually live permanently in the US.

I understand what you are saying....the Aussies I mention do live permanently in the States because that is where the work is, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts to name a few, they have all retained their Aussie accents and ironically Nicole is married to a Kiwi/Aussie but he has an American accent too. I think NZ have a better relationship with Americans than Aussie despite the incidents you mention.

And that is why Americans would rather visit NZ then Aussie, I am a Kiwi and I live in OZ but I have lived in America too and I can tell you that most Americans would rather visit NZ, its much to do with the hospitality of the people then anything else and yes I picked up an accent, but its gone now, I still have my Kiwi one!

I think he probably lost his accent a bit after doing so many movies where he had to have an American accent. In older interviews his accent is firmly intact, but in new ones it isn't. Or maybe he was right in the middle of Star Trek pre-production in this where he has to have an American accent. Who knows, he's just amazing.

I'd never heard of Pathfinder until I saw this promo video. I went out, rented it, watched it twice. Considering what he had to work with, Karl Urban did a good job. I think any deficiencies Pathfinder has are a direct result of the Director's choices. The lighting was too dark and inconsistant. Also, it needed more color other than just flying blood. Karl buffed up for his role of Ghost, he was looking very athletic. Nice sword work.

I am an English major, and I think that he's simply picked up on the pronounced 'r' in American and other rhotic accents. His vowels are still rather British sounding and in my opinion, he comes over as Irish, strangely enough...

Jep... it's the 'e's, like n 'years'. The are more pointed than in American both in Australian and in Irish. That coupled with the 'r's makes fre something like Irish, or Boston American (also often Irish-sounding)

I think Karl Urban is a great actor, anyone who've seen his acting can comprove that, bur unfortunately for this movie, I think that he didn't suit that role at all... Maybe he did not match the spirit of that acting while recording or that was simply not a job for him.

It's even strange for me and hard to explain why I didn't like his acting, but it just happened. And I wasn't the only one... lots of friends (actors and a director) told me the very same...
