BigsbyBender...your a dick. What difference does it make what the hell his thumb does...if you really knew guitar, you'd realize he's using it to for bass notes. What an anal twat.
I own this dvd of Paul Pigat. This Youtube video is just featuring what he can show you, and the type of music/style you will learn. I can assure those who are interested that he goes into detail with different left hand finger patterns, and explains each chord used, step by step. He can successfully teach you travis picking, or at least the song. I felt it works best for intermediate guitar players, but great for first time travis pickers, like me. I enjoyed the dvd.
I'm curious: it's certainly hard to tell from the the "teaser" clip, but does this dvd slowly- and I mean slowly- break down the right hand picking technique? As in- which fingers are assigned where and when?
I dont get the guys bad mouthing this Dvd???? Paul Pigat is a brilliant guitarist and who cares where his thumb is or what Pick hes using..the end result is Brilliant Playing by an amazing Player......................Check out the live clips of cousin Harley and watch a master at work.....If you think you cant learn from his dvd's Ill bet you havent even opened the package..I got his Rockabilly dvd and its helped my playing Ten fold.
I have been trying on and off for the past 30 years to get that "AUTOMATIC" thumb going and I still haven't managed to crack it yet. I am close but cannot seem to make the breakthrough. Any advice or exercises that can help in this vital transition? Thanks and a lovely bit of pickin on ther first section, real Merle stuff there.
I just got the DVD in the mail and unfortunately he does not teach this song unless they hid it somewhere. I hate when I buy an instructional dvd and they don't teach the cool intro.
too many guitar players forget the value of the right hand. This is a good example of how it can be used in one style of music. I feel like I should brush up on my thumb picking again. Hmm?
Hey njsteve37, sorry we couldn't include "I'll see you in my Dreams" in the DVD. The company had concerns about royalty rights regarding the piece and we omitted it. I'll be putting out a book of arrangements sometime soon and I'll be sure to include it.
I also have Paul's Rockabilly DVD and it was easily the best instructional DVD I've ever used. I look forward to the checking out his other DVD lessons.
Really recommend the DVD, I have by now **mastered** Pauls´s Rockabilly DVD and just received the Travis Picking, busy with it, next propably will be the Jazzing up, Paul is very good teacher and the sections are broken up very well and you have the tabs to download, really enjoying this, fast shipment to Europe too.
I've had lessons like this before. The teacher's objective is to make sure you appreciate how well they play rather than to instruct you in how to play.
This is a trailer for a 2 hour DVD lesson that is one of three we've produced with Paul. His DVDs are the most popular in our catalogue - as much for their instructional quality as their playing content. The original title of the youtube clip wasn't intended to mislead so I've updated it to be clearer.
That's why you've gotta buy the DVD. I have the thing, and his lessons make it so much easier to just noodle around with different chord progressions and what not real quick. I recomend this DVD, Pauls rockabilly lesson, and the jazzy what have you DVD he has out there. He's an amzing teacher! Buy em' NOW!
@RWhiddon2 I bought this DVD and I must say. It was pretty awesome. It's for intermediate to advanced players and I really learned a ton. I think he's not only a great player but also a great teacher. My hats off to him.
This is impressive. I would hardly call it a lesson. My idea of a lesson is going very slow and describing what is happening so I can learn and try to duplicate. This is like one of my teachers...willing to show me how well he played but not spending much time helping me learn to play.
OK...I'll take back my negative remarks. However, it shouldn't be listed on youtube as a "lesson"...but I understand. I will check out his lesson DVD to see if it is as good as you say.
Hey harris if ya want,do a search on the Gretsch disscusion page and you will find many, many threads with very high praise for the 2 dvd's.Have fun my man!
Thumb over is ONLY a no-no in Classical guitar playing. Lot's of GENIUS players like Wes in jazz and Hendrix in R&R play that way almost all the time. I do too a lot...actually for some styles, you HAVE too!!
why does everybody always say the thumb over the fretboard is wrong? many of the pioneering players played that way and if you can make it sound that good then it's gotta be right..right?...was django's messed up right hand wrong?..i don't think so..there is no right or wrong way..if you make it work for you then it has to be right
Right hand technique is good, and it all sounds good, but what's with the left hand thumb over the top of the fretboard? That's always been a no-no to me...
Paul plays with the thumb on the back of the neck when needed. He studied and taught classical guitar originally. He's using the thumb over the neck for open string damping here.
The type of chords that Paul (and everyone else for that matter) plays when doing Travis style lend themselves to using the thumb to fret the low E string as well as for damping the 5th string. Just because you don't do it doesn't make it wrong....
isn´t this a Marcel Dadi theme?
