You guys that long for this sound... John Arch has a solo album he did with Jim Matheos (guitarist here on this and all FW) and they have a new band called Arch Matheos
To insult any genre of Metal that is accepted in the realm of such, is an insult to Heavy Metal as a whole and you should be ashamed of yourself for being the type to do such a thing. I am a traditional metal lover at heart, but most genres hold my appeal to a degree, including Black metal. Still, the genres that I cannot find an ear for, I still respect for their contribution to the longevity of this amazing thing called Metal. Infighting is the fall of great things.
@FeastOnFlesh82 haha dont worry bud, i've listened to their whole discography already! they kickass! perfect songs such as Kiss Of Death, The Calling, The Apparition, Epitaph, The Sorceress, Guardian, Eye To Eye, Point Of View, We Only Say Goodbye, Monument, Through Different Eyes, Circles, One, So, Simple Human and many more! though i think they got a bit comercial in the last 2 albums.. im looking forward to the album that is gonna come out soon. but yeah Awaken the Guardian was a great album!
Death = downtuned,high tempo,usualy cookie monster vocals,usualy overwhelming drums
Black = mostly verry slow tempo, easy unorignal riffs wich in many cases consist of spamming the same powerchords over and over, crappy melodies with every note in it getting repeated at least 8 times before moving on to the next, screaming vocals.
Black metal is for a big part dominated by 1-2 man bands, but it doesnt suprise me because nothing is more easy to compose then cliché black metal.
@Guyverhoeven as far as black metal goes your forgeting bands like mayhem, immortal, emeror, dimmu borgir, old mans child, amongst others too many to list that are actual bands, as in 3 or more members. the riffing, as explained to me by a guitarist who plays a 7 string in the local bm band fog is kinda like backwards riffin. nothin simple to the good bm bands. and death metal bands, the good ones, explore musical possabilities at something like 200 bpm. im thinking nile, morbid angel, death, etc
@metalgod1967 I dont care about DImmu Borgir and such im talking about the majority of Black metal, not the few who made it big. No wonder black metal is a underground genre.
@Guyverhoeven BLACK METAL IS AN UNDERGROUND GENRE BECAUSE ITS NOT FOR THE WEAK OR FOR COMMERCIAL EARS.FOR WARRIORS,MISANTHROPISTS,YOU DON'T GET IT SO FUCK OFF ALREADY
@Guyverhoeven Whoever think this sounds like Maiden is like thinking 80's Stratovarius sounds like Maiden and their first album Fright Night is basically heavy metal.
Do you really think that John Arch vocal's are so much hated I don't think so. There's just a difference between the group of people that especially like the first 3 albums, so woth John Arch, and the people who like FW esp. in the periode with Ray Alder. I think it's just more a matter of taste.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the drumming style created by Steve ZimmerMan- blew me away da first time heard this album.Alot of people say it was Portnoy of Dream Theatre and Zonder that created it . but ZimmerMan was the first ! At first I didn't like the fact that they were given credit for this off beat style...TILL in an interview with Portnoy,, He Acknowleged Zimmerman as startin this trend.Mad Respect ! Metal ! IT Is The Law Vikk Real- Oneof Sixx / ByFist / Fiarro
This stuff is always great, big fan of Queensryche, feel right at home jamming to Fates Warning, John Arch is master of vocals, one of the best ones alongside Geddy Lee, Rob Halford, Geoff Tate, and all those guys who are famous for high notes!
I've had this album for years, and I've always kept an eye out to see if there was a guitar tablature book of this album put out. Does anyone know if there ever was a book put out, and if so, how the hell I could get a hold of it?? PLEASE HELP!!!:)
I love this album always reminds me of my first guitar bought this album the same week as my fender knockoff back in 86'thanks for the download anyone who would put this out is a friend listen to the power of arch, try looking up blind illusion for more kickass old school metal.
What the hell?! How have I not heared this band before???! This is awesome!! Sounds to me like a cross between early Blind Guardian and Solitude Aeturnus!!! :)
i looked at this song title and knew it would start with an acoustic passage :D this is the second song from these guys ive heard now. 1st one was guardian.
My friend bought the cassett release of the first three.mid 80s ahead of their time definately. was very popular in seattle early 90s. my friend recall them "very heavy" fair statement.:)

This album has its all, black, death, thrash, progressive and thrash metal.
tasikas75 1 year ago
@tasikas75 Don't make it more complicated than it is. It's US progressive power metal. Fates Warning has never been thrash.
TheGoldenPS1 1 year ago
@TheGoldenPS1 no exit cd has a lot of thrash elements. Prelude to Ruin does also...
tasikas75 11 months ago
@tasikas75 But still the subgenre is not thrash.

@Guyverhoeven musically speaking, the guitars are most definately thrashy.
metalgod1967 9 months ago 2
@metalgod1967 Nothing specificly thrashy about it at all.
Its just rawfully produced chord progression while the vocals deliver the melodies.
Heavy metal bands have been playing riffs like that way before the birth of thrash metal.
Its a Heavy / progressive metal album, nothing more.
