Clearly, it withstands substantial impact, but that actually makes sense when you consider the structural integrity of a convex surface. Still, you never want to drop your lens, and everyone agrees that you just try not to do so, but then things do happen. Scratches, however, are more easily preventable and bring about the age-old "UV-filter vs. no UV-filter" argument. And this test did little to comfort me if using a naked lens.
Thanks for showing this. I always treat my lenses like wounded baby-birds that fell from the nest, when it comes to the glass parts. Looks like they're not that vulnerable at all. During regular use dust inside a lens is probably a more real threat to image quality than scratched glass.
Well for one thing, at least it showed how durable Canon lenses are. Which they are from what we can see. The Lens was probably spoiled in the first place before he did this. The focus ring looks whacked too.
You scared the living crap out of me...even so this morning when accidentally I sprayed computer duster on my lens... I'm still wondering if I should just get it repaired or just buy a new one...
@citizenzombie LOL. This is like a $75 lens. If it was already broken it would be cheaper to get a new one than to send it into Canon to get it fixed.

@jknightglfr The point isn't how much the lens, itself, costs. The point is that you should respect your equipment. The point is you should respect the craft of photography. The point is, while photographers are out taking pictures, SPOILED RICH KIDS (clearly with disposable incomes) are destroying lenses on YouTube for the sake of "entertainment."
Anyway... not a beef. Just an opinion. You stick to yours and I'll stick to mine.
@citizenzombie Pros will routinely take their gear out in snow, rain, deserts, etc. In fact, I STILL HAVE THIS LENS. I'm not "destroying" this lens because it's already broken, I was horrified when it broke. In fact, even if it wasn't already broken I wouldn't have destroyed it! There's no salvageable value in this lens, it would cost the equivalent of atleast 2 copies of this lens to repair it.
well it holds up very well, i thought it was going to break when you took out that hammer but it didn't. I don't know why you are trying you break a $100 lens but I have seen people smash $500 iPad screens. LOL
@richardchoi "Bored, so I decided to see how fragile Canon glass was. The lens is a canon 50mm 1.8 II, and the front element is actually quite alright, I only managed to scratch some of the coating off in the last part. Also note that larger, heavier lenses with larger front elements are probably easier to crack/break than the 50mm 1.8, which was already broken anyway."
I don't think you mentioned a broken lens anywhere.
@Brenniman65 Wasting $75? Considering it is the cheapest lens Canon makes and it would probably cost more to have it repaired by Canon, why not do this? =) He can have a brand new replacement for cheaper and in less time than if Canon were to fix it.
In the end he should hit this lens by huge rock destroying it completely and advertise the house building company saying something like that: - If you build your house call us. Our bricks are made from the rocks like that hehehe

This is because the cheaper lenses aren't made with real glass, they are more plastic. while the L series would break if you do this kind of abuse to them.
You clearly know nothing about lenses. The only reason an "L" series lens would break is because it's a larger piece of glass, so it's structurally weaker. The cheaper lenses aren't made out of "plastic" beyond the lens body and mounts.
wow can you try that to your Canon L glasses lets see how durable they are and can you message me if you already have a demonstration video, many thanks.
If you have to much money, maybe you can give me some...

You did not manage to break the glass because it is plastic :) but I guess you should know this buy now...lol
Anyway, next time even if broke already, it would be a better destination to donate it to charity, or sell it on ebay as broke.

Thats why its holding up. Plastic will bounce and metal will dent. Everything metal is way overrated.
