The academy never seizes to amaze me by their unfitting dance numbers over score nominations. It's just distracting... I love dance, but these choreographers should listen to the music first before they make up a routine... in my humble opinion :-)
@tudorcfr90 You'll notice a trend with William's being nominated. They act like he has an entire wall of them at home and so they don't usually nominate williams for more than one at a time and if they do, it's to let someone else win (IE: Brokeback Mountain). The winners aren't chosen but merit half the time I've seen too. It always seems that whoever wins is a throwaway to either some relevant topic of the time or what have you
@BrachioInGen if you listen to his the music for his recent film scoring for "War Horse", a majority of it just sounds like reused material from his other films but the comparisons I heard were very Saving Private Ryan/Born on the Fourth of July. Perhaps he's losing his touch?
@Volts48 Well, all composers have styles and themes and things they go back to. I won't argue that I'm not as impressed by his modern compositions as I was by many in his great repetoire but I will argue that there are always styles and motifs that composers reuse. Williams, for the most part, reuses these to adapt them...to explore them more fully...to elaborate them. For example, the B section of "Abandoned in the Woods" from AI is the B section in "Across the Stars" in Episode II
@BrachioInGen as far as my comment about being overlooked, some of his greatest scores have been in favour of lack luster works by newer composers. Not that I'm bitter, but what I've come to accept is that the academy gives him a nomination as a Nod to him saying "good work great sir" and then gives it to someone else who hasn't and may never have the chance again, knowing Williams will lol... I don't like it really, but it seems to be how it is
People can work all their lives to learn how to compose music but to compose something like this, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Harry Potter and so on you got to have natural talent.....like John Williams has, and what a talent!!!!!
Williams deserved this Oscar.....BUT what a fucking joke the Academy put on...DANCING TO SCHINDLER'S LIST!!!!???? WHOMEVER thought of that bad idea? Come on...it makes no sense.....I am truly surprised that NO ONE...wanted to place wires on Chris Reeves wheel chair and fly him around on stage!!!!! when he was there at the Academy....WHO think of these lame ass ideas. AND Spielberg was NOT happy also..when they did ballet to Williams music!!!! What a lame joke those producers are!!!!
@UFOSPACE1999 Who thought it was a good idea to have breakdancing to the music of "Up" in 2009? is the real question that deserves answering. Ballet is a respectable form of dance; would you prefer breakdancing to the music of Williams? I would be pissed off if I saw that.
@Volts48 i AM talking about this lame ass dance sequence. IT shows that the academy is low and have NO sensitivity to what Schindler's List was about. AND TO have a dance sequence as WE MURDER THE JEWS..yeah..u get it now....Make no sense to me..and DIDNT for Spielberg, who also COMPLAINED about the lack of sensitivity displayed by THE ACADEMY!!!!
@UFOSPACE1999 Dude, Dance, as an art form, is capable of representing incredibly complex and different themes. It is able to portray longing, dispair, and of course sadness. I'm not saying this particular choreography is a great achievement or for that matter even a success but ballet is not offensive by itself. Its use here can not be seen as a lack of sensibility.
the fuck is with the ballet

@Winduct The Piano was not eligible by the Academy because Nyman use pre-existing themes for the score.
