@IRyu03 this is life.. not everything has a happy ending. Feeling pain of others makes you a better person, more sympathetic, more willing to help in real life. If you think about it, being selfish is thinking of only what makes you happy and sad.

This is not a good movie. A good movie is one which transmits goodness to the viewer even amidst tragedies or sorrow or whatever. But here this movie confuses the viewer. It is simply absurd to suggest in the colonel, a liking or anxiousness to meet the criminal villain of his and his mother's lives' spoiler. No this movie is a not good.

There must be two versions of this movie. It was show on Dutch tv, but after Sanja shoots Toljan he continues his life saying there is nothing, nothing. I am very suprised there is another version where Sanja is much older and sees the image of his real father again! Why is there two versions of this film?

the movie is excellent yet it is very sad movie- it speaks about the reality of life- the pain is excruciating- the cast o the film is very effective. they had portrayed the character well-enough that the audience could relate into it. furthermore, Sonja, there is still hope- GOD will never left you nor forsake you!

@vorkutaman I think it was the case, that in some countries the ending was with Sanja shooting Tolyan and then an ending scene of him going to bed and with the voice in off saying something like 'I had to kill him so that I am nothing, nothing, nothing'... I do not recall the exact words, though. In any case, I agree that this ending is better. The scenes of Sanja as a grown-up man do not really add anything... And indeed good film!

Amazing film! Beautifully filmed and great actors. The three of them. I see the story as a metaphore of Russia during those times, mainly regarding Stalin, but everything is hinted in such a subtle way. Thanks for posting. Is it possible that there is an alternative ending to the movie?? I believe I have seen some more footage, when Sanya is already a man...

Вот сразу же надо обижаться. ;-) Я тоже не гений в английском... Там написано, что субтитры - DVDRip, то бишь с диска. Мне эти субтитры прислал один американец. Субтитры с официального релиза диска в Штатах. Вот и всё. ;-)

Yeah, Eastern European film makers have been doing it right since the 1920s. The new version of Taras Bulba, for example, is a trillion times better than that atrocious Hollywood attempt.
