  • Gene was a genius but a very tortured soul. He couldn't face his demons and chose to end his life . The Canadian music scene became a lot darker that day. I remember the announcement of his passing like it was yesterday. Ron took it harder than most and this song just tears at my heart knowing the pain he felt when he wrote it.

  • this is one of the finest songs that ron ever sung his just the greatest ye his newfoundland,s prize

  • Beautiful sad song, nicely done video, too! I have a couple of videos of Ron, performing live "Wayfaring Stranger" and "Put your hand in the Hand", on my channel. Perhaps you might enjoy them! God bless.

  • What a powerful song!! I have this CD and used to listen to this on the road. I always had to pull over to listen to it again! Just too short. Thanks Ron! You're a national treasure, and so was Gene. I used to go to the Soundbone in the Goulds to party with The Wonderful Grand Band(underaged!! LOL) and I've always been a big fan. God bless!

  • My pleasure. The song is a fine piece of work. I can only hope I did it some justice. Rest in Peace, Gene.

  • Thanks so much for this.

  • Ron Hynes' powerful and moving song about the death of Gene MacLellan, prolific Canadian singer songwriter. Gene wrote several songs that were recorded by Anne Murray and others, such as Snowbird, The Call, Bidin' My Time, Thorn In My Shoe, Put Your Hand in the Hand, and many more. Gene Maclellan took his own life in 1995.
