It occurs to me that endiing religion might be a bad thing. By the very words of the religious we know that they are only moral because of the threat of punishment (hell) and the promise of reward (heaven). What will they be like if we remove these 2 motivators? Some would discover within themselves the true source of morality but some might just think that life is a free for all, grab what you want, get away with what you can. Enough of them are like that now! Just kidding. Sort of.

Plenty of the currently religious people WOULD probably go crazy if you removed their religion. That's why we should never support any idea that involves forcing anything. However, if you just didn't teach religion to a child, they end up just fine. They can always learn it themselves if they want when they're old enough. No-one is really indoctrinated where I live and they never tend to later become religious. It's a very telling observation.

@TheRadicalLiberal No you are 100% right, people that do not believe in religion tend to want to eradicate it, yet do not understand how it is holding so many people back from committing acts of violence etc...I personally don't care about religion but I cannot sit here and say I do not believe in God cause I do, but my idea of God is not as simple as religion makes it to be. I couldn't care less about following very controversial characters we know so little about ie prophets.

Nevertheless, I agree: tolerance, education and civility are the most important, unfortunately often abandoned by many when blogging anonimously. Not this user, as you can tell, and banning was never suggested. Do I stand for respect of individual beliefs ? Yes. For compassion for people who are prisoners of those beliefs ? Yes. For respect for organized religion (i.e. organized crime) ? No.

Religion is detrimental on all levels. It poisons everything (read CH.) Even friendships between atheists (personal experience.) Any way you put it, religion is a dark chapter in human civilization, and so it should become extinct. Let it remain in history and psychiatry books, not in reality.

Wiping out religion is too harsh a phraseology, as it suggests violence. Which, BTW, is not foreign to religion. I advocate the acceleration of the extinction of religion. First and foremost by education, then by rational thinking and tolerance. Asking for religion to linger around is akin to asking for the medieval diseases to linger around.

Richard Dawkins is a genius and needs alot more respect aimed at him. The guy has spent decades studying evolution and devoted most of his life to this. However religious fundamentalists have done nothing but visciously attack him and why? all because he speaks sense and presents facts.

Religious people need to remember that Richard Dawkins knows what he is talking about. He's been studying biology for a long time.
