I'm not the type of rabid fan who knows where the meat was purchased for the hamburgers Brian ate at the piano in the sandbox. I love the sonic grace of the music and the sublime lyrics of pieces like 'God Only Knows'. I don't know much about the machinations of Mike and Brian's Dad. My point is, listen to some of this nonsensical shit which NEVER should have made it to production. Brian's genius was not limitless, and SOMEone who gave a shit should have told the Emperor that he had no clothes.
You were my sunshine, my only sunshine. You made me happy, when skies were grey. You'll never know dear, how much I loved you. How could you take my sunshine away?
@grands1am Well, Mark Linnett is working on the REAL release of SMILE, We were all hoping for a release in August. Let's just see when it happens. It is certainly worth waiting for, as long as it isn't Darian S.'s version, but the real thing!
cool inventive stuff; reminds me a bit of HAL when he was goin' down, singing another old americana song very slowly, Daisy Daisy..., 'Bicycle built for two'. I assume this was brian circa 2004 singing this song and not a remix of a 1960s recording. i like how his voice is engineered to affect the theme of the song. Love the cello and the sax ending.
I wish it wasn't cut off at the end, since the ending is a very important part of this song... it needs to slip on down and slowly fade out. :( Love the song.
"do you know if this might have been the influence of drugs?" thats like saying "do you know if perhaps dolly parton sleeps on her back?" ...Gee man Do Porcupines Float? Do Sharks Have Eyelids? LOL yes absolutely... Brian Wilson was documented as loving to take LSD and smoke Marijuana and was probably mixing amphetamines at this time as well... other musicians have been worse druggies... But thank goodness for his music however he wrote it... BW is the best.
Yeah, and that's as tragic as a story about a record could possibly be. As great as the Beatles were, their dominance really seems to have hurt other bands of the time. I can't help but imagine the entire genre that would have come out of Smile if it had been released. The Beach Boys would probably also have a much better reputation now.
No, they're not to blame, but you have to admit that their personality and influence seems to have cowed a lot of bands into feeling that they had to copy them to get anywhere
Also, everyone should listen to that Bowns version of "The Old Master Painter" that's linked to the side. I'd never heard the original song before, it's pretty amazing to hear that intro melody after only knowing the Smile interpolation
they personality, well, i never heard them bash others during their beatles days, okay, after jagger started talking shit about the beatles after the break-up he put him into his place in a interrview (rightly so) and back then it actually started many a career to be infleunced by them, them writing and playing everything alone is one of the of the most important changes they made.
yeah, the original smile tapes are brilliant, and kind of crazy, all those ideas forming, but never to an end.
Was this ever released by the Beach Boys and did Dennis Wilson ever sing it ? .. it claims on wikipedia that "You Are My Sunshine" is a Dennis Wilson song .. let me kno if anyone has info on this.
brian wilson is a genius without even trying

This is from the latter day version and pales in comparison to the original.

Simply wonderful.

This version sounds like Brian singing. The more commonly heard one is Dennis.

this is a strange interpretation.

yeah, but it's not the beatles fault.
they did what they wanted to do, they achieved what they wanted to achieve, then they split up and now are reagrded as the greatest band of all time.
Brians mental problems killed the genre you refer too.
so Brians dad and Mike Love killed t in the long run.
