  • This is a Let's Play? I thought Let's Plays had to have voice commentaries, and without it, it's a playthrough

  • Well, I never heard of that rule. It may be the text I type and not my actual voice that's saying "Let's play this game", but either way, I'm playing this game!

  • Er, is the sound supposed to be doing that?

  • Yes. It was set that way.

  • Well it kinda messed with my brain lol.

  • Awesome vid QC!

  • Great job! The hack looks pretty nice. We'll be sure to check out ElBlocko's other stuff.

Also kudos for your idea to turn off those channels in the emulator. It gives a new sound to the game and it's interesting.

  • Looks like a hard hack

  • It has its challenges and puzzles, but for someone who's played SMB3 literally all their life like I have, it's really no problem for me to figure out anything that introduces itself as being difficult. Thanks for the comment. :)

  • Hey Qu1ckCur1y, which emulator do you use to record these videos? There are some SMB hacks I want to record and upload

  • I use Nestopia for playing and recording purposes, and FCEUXD for hacking purposes. (So the answer to your question is Nestopia.) May I ask which emulator (or method) you used to upload your other NES videos then? (For example, Twin Bee and Legend of Kage.)

  • FCE Ultra but this emulator doesn't run some hacks properly

  • Really? I would have thought that the problems would be minimal. Well, you could always try FCEUXD if you feel it would be easier for you. Personally, I find that Nestopia is the most recorder-friendly NES emulator - but that's just me. Others would probably say otherwise.

In addition, I have never had a problem with playing ANY games in Nestopia. It is very user-friendly all around.

Let me know how things work out! :)

  • Wait... am I seeing that right? You entered the castle and ended up in the desert level? Oh my. That's not right at all. Did you change the pointer, by chance?

  • Awesome job. Neat hack. Great vid.

  • Thanks for all the comments guys! ^_^

For those asking, yes - I turned off the Square 2 and Triangle Channels in the emulator. Like docsigma said, I find that it is appropriate with this hack, as ElBlocko originally did a bit of glitch stuff. For those who have also read my SMB3 document, you'd have noticed at the end that I said I want to study the SMB3 music format. This is sort of tackling two things at once - doing another LP, and studying which Channels do what at the same time.

  • Uh oh, lol. QC is getting more ideas for his next hack.

What happened to the music (and some SFX)? And it's funny the ending (grab a card) scenes are gone sometimes, heh. Or are they... grabbed in the middle of the stage?!

  • That is a nice hack. That's a nice LP vid. The part with the sunken ship was nice too.

  • Oh wow, this is a cool-looking hack! Can't wait to see the rest.

Incidentally, did you turn those sound channels off in the emulator, or is it a special feature of the ROM? It gives the game a really unique feel...

  • I'm not sure if it's me, YouTube, or this video, but some of the music is messed up.
