  • most excellent use of fire

  • this is friggin' kick friggin' ass!!!

  • 2 People Were lit on Fire by this song.

  • You can tell they're young because they're still trying. Dave actually sings the lyric. Starting on the first tour after the first album Dave got very sloppy and then sang that way for the rest of his time with Van Halen. He would just "slur talk" the lyrics live. Also, Ed was not yet "over flourishing" his guitar parts yet. He's actually playing a phrase from beginning to end without throwing in incidentals. Bands are better in the early stages before they have success to rest on.

  • Yes they where .and still on fire

  • Holy shit! What happened to THIS Van Halen?

  • 77 76 78.. who cares just enjoy it why argue bout what year its from shit if u know what year it was than why do you have to prove it to everyone on youtube shit anytime someone puts a year of a recording for van halen all the noobs get together and stick it up each others ass

  • this is hot!

  • F' n'a!!!! This makes me wanna go crazy!!!

  • IIIM OOOOON FIIIRRREEEEEE.

  • I always dug roth and mikes harmonies.

It's funny thinking about it, that people spent the next 15 yrs trying to clone van halen. Some of the cheesiest bullshit acts ever conceived were because of these guys. Myself, along with countless others have tried to make a buck stealing (a little or a lot) from van halen's originality.

Thanks for sharing this cool piece of audio.

  • a lot of the songs sound the same except for the solos

  • Eddie was all over the place!! He said they thought they were kinda punk in the early years, and this song sounds like it. Very cool version of a great song!

  • Halen. Nirvana. Rage. LIT......NO MORE

  • Heavy Metal bands that matter since 978

  • I know more Halen than all yous. even used a song for a break beat. the 2nd cut. side one after Mean Streets. bow down punks! lol

  • alright already....jeez.....get off my back. I still got all you fucks. Saw Halen at the Garden in 81. 12 years old....only spook in the arena.....fought the zoo crew and the deli boys and the cops that night. they extended EVERYBODY WANTS SOME. JUNGLE DRUMS......I WAS THE ONLY MOOLIE OUT OF 17,000 CAVEMEN. I FUCKING RULE SO EASE UP CAUSE I GOT THE FREAKIN YEAR WRONG ALREADY!

  • Amazing sound quality ,thanks for the upload!

  • I thought most of the songs on the first album had been written a good year or two in advance? Either way in 78 they gave the rock world a big kick in the ass haha!

  • Thanks for posting this. Got more and how in the world did you get this bootleg? Wow! I sure like listening to this song.

  • That bridge riff after the chorus is pretty hard to play and tricky.

  • Hey cucambers!!!!! A man of true taste and class!!!! Thanks bro for posting!!!!!

  • The picture in this video doesn't make sense. That's a young EVH during the Roth days holding a Wolfgang guitar that didn't come until after his Roth days. I don't think he even had Wolfgangs even in '86 when Samuel Hagar first joined either. Wasn't until the 90's he had the Wolfgang guitars? Anyway, thanks for uploading this live piece from '76. The classic Van Halen is always the best.

  • @LedWilde It's actually a Music Man guitar.

  • Hey genius - yea, it came out in SEVENTY-EIGHT on the first VH album, but they were playing these tunes for fucking YEARS in the clubs before they got signed. I'm not saying this is from 76, but it is feasible that it could be....

  • i was only 3 years than...so i miss this show :(

  • If anyone wishes to hear an original tune in the fashion of vintage VH. Feel free to stop by here. VH is a historic band and forever a powerhouse.

  • so there is some material from the Pasadena age before the WB deal? Wanna hear it all no matter how crappy!

  • i remember talking to Pete Angelus outside a Cars show in Tulsa. he was looking at the tour shirt i had just bot, and i needed it back. Pete looked offended and said, "you think i'm going to steal it ? " . i responded, "no, my parents are here and i gotta go now".

  • 也是我會的吉他SOLO之ㄧ

  • he's great,I just think bonham is on another level.

  • they are great words can't say after 30 years

  • bonham would smoke alex, not even a contest!

  • @evelskunny so alex is good to you jack off

  • @evelskunny Yeah? So what?

  • @evelskunny A dead guy can't smoke anybody. Just sayin...

  • alex van halen best drummer?? hell no, maybe top 30, john bonham, with the small kit he used was the most talented drummer ever. a beast on the drums, and im not talkin "moby dick" wich is good, watch the dvd of zep's royal albert hall show and watch bonzo, just insane

  • @srw92831 I agree man, totaly...

  • @srw92831 You are 110% correctamundo Sir. Bonham....best ever!!! That's it and that's all!!!

  • eddie should sue himself for copyright - "Atomic Punk" is basically same. Both tunes rock though. Just sayin

  • dream of me Adnoydal....LMAO!!!! Shhhh Noyd...those voixces in your head are mine....keep stalking my profile!!! Youre owned Noyd...caught you again today, stalking my profile!!! LOL EDV is god

  • There are many bootlegs from '74 on up. This bootleg is from Oct 15, 1977 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. That's Pete Angelus introducing the band.

I have this bootleg in it's entirety. They had signed with Warner Bros but had not yet gone into the studio. Dave makes a reference prior to Atomic Punk about how he has, "...always wanted to say this, here's one off our first album. It's called Atomic Punk!!"

    Yo!

  • @YoBroMan ......Thats DLR introducing, for sure......Love this old, young stuff. Great job man for posting this!

  • @YoBroMan Thats Dave introducing the band bro!!

  • I used to listen to this while in Nam in 1967. Then our swift boat sank. We had to walk on the backs of alligators to make it ashore again. Some crazy times man.

  • lol

  • Wow huge mistake at 0:39 ... very sloppy performance

  • This is a trip? I wonder who or what influenced these riffs and the song..

  • ou812 is pretty damn heavy 67 , but fair warning is their heaviest. f'n rocks!

  • FUCKEN ROCK !

  • niel peart is the greatest drummer ever, or buddy rich

  • no chance

check out george kollias or romain goulon, they'd kill him ^^

  • That aint sayin much...any dope with two arms can play drums...Oh, wait a minute..I guess you really only need one arm... like that dude in Def Leppard...hahahahaha

  • How come you don't play drums then?

  • I played drums since I was a baby and I say it was a slight mistake but it turned out on time, so that doesnt make it a mistake it makes it an original cool fill. The double kick accents are a little slow though throughout the whole song though

  • disagree alex van halen is the best drummer on the planet period end of story

  • BWAHAHAHA! He sounds beyond wimpy, like kids splashing barefoot in rain puddles after a gentle spring shower

  • @stratdem I think he is the only drummer who could compliment Eddie, but no, in my opinion he would be in the top 25, but not number one.

  • I have an LA tape with Women & Beer on it and other originals that were never recorded. I think it's off the board and maybe from Gizzaries, or somewhere on the strip. I'll dig it up and post it.

  • Thats awesome dude get that shit up!

  • bonham isn't worth to hold alex's sticks.come on.Even if you like alex better.their is no denying that bonhams was a great drummer.I love vh halen music but their is alot of it i don't like.I have to say i like everything zep did.But I think the first 4 vh albums were flawless. 1984 was alittle to pop sounding for me. but still good.I just never could get into the van hagar stuff. great musicians still.good writting but just not heavy enough for me

  • I don't disagree, but listen, Alex was such an under rated drummer. I'm not sure if he takes Bonham out, but i never realized what was so special about Bonham? He was obviously amazing, but Alex if anything isn't that far behind. Don't believe me? Check out Alex's drum solo on the 5150 tour with hagar, absoloutlyjaw dropping

  • right, Hagar fucked up the heavy Van Halen sound and I think technically Alex is a better drummer than Bonham, but agree that Bonham had a special sounding.

  • van halen was released on febuary 10th 1978 - the World tour began in march of 1978 - van halen II released march 20 1979 - world tour began in april of 1979.

they they world tour'd just about all of 1978 and 1979. van halen couldnt be touched by ANYONE! that includes led zeppelin.

  • Right... Music is all just one big competition to be a fan of the group with the biggest statistics.

  • I've always wondered how these guys met. Eddie and Dave, probably the two biggest opposites but what chemistry! That goes for alot of supergroups.

  • Eddie and Alex were in a band called Mammoth and rented Dave's PA system for ten bucks a night. They got sick of paying so they joined together so they wouldn't have to pay. Mike just was in their classes and they recruited him.

  • I was there when this was recorded. This is one of the Pasadena Civic boots. Killer!!

  • Woah! dude that must have been so dam cool! do you think this was recorded of the board? it must have been! great quality recording for that time there is no way it was recorded with any mic type thing. Man I wish the rest of the show was on this you-tube thing > that sounds really good.... like the first VanHalen album wasn't even out untill the next year!

  • Nice video

    I LOVE VAN HALEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • man, alex is really keeping the beat tight.

  • sweet opening riff

  • very cool thanx for posting

  • evh and dlr are absolutely wonderful together! eddies playing is amazing and davids singing gives me goosebumps! i LOVE VAN HALEN!!

  • Eddie's just... the best hands down

  • agreed. not sure why people don't just accept that!!

  • I've never heard ANY drummer sound like Bonham, before or after. That's why he's great, and that's why a lot of other people think he's great. Obviously you didn't get the memo. As a Van Halen fanboy (which you obviously are) maybe you're upset that Alex Van Halen is underrated. Maybe you're even right...but better than Bonham? Come on...Bonham is in a class with maybe 4 or 5 other drummers...and Alex isn't in there. Sorry.

  • @blacksabfan I'd argue that bonham as a hard rock drummer has no rivals, Yah others can play more technical stuff, but that doesn't automatically make a song sound better, Paul gilbert can play circles around eddie, but i can only listen to so much of it before i get bored.

  • wow. when did they ever NOT have it!! VH RULES!

  • those were.....good times.. damn good times..

  • i love EVH....if only i had 3000 dollars i would buy an EVH wolfgang replica guitar *sighs* and a frankenstien replica for 25000...*louder sigh*

  • Damn I wish I had a time machine.

  • lol me too

  • Comment removed

  • sounds great with the harmony vocal during the chorus

  • love the picture

  • Did anyone notice the guitar in the picture dos`nt match the period its supposed to depict lol . Well thats all my Vannerd quota used up for today cool picture though .

  • Yeah that's true, but I just chose a picture that looked cool, I guess I wasn't thinking about the period.

  • You can find any of the styles of all these guitarists you all have mentioned on The Yardbirds Roger The Engineer album from early 1966. BECK started it all and is still the best flash guitarist of all time!

  • Van Halen bootlegs are not always accurate on the dating. Some people mix and match tunes on different dates. It is possible that Van Halen covered it when it came out that summer.

    Possibly on 45.

I had black Dog and Mistey Mountain Hop on 45.

    Before Led Zeppelin IV

    That's all I know. - John

  • This is definately a Live soundboard.

I have an extensive Live & Studio Van Halen collection from 1974 to 2005.

It was probably recorded at The Starwood in Hollywood, California.

I have Van Halen covering "Trampled Under Foot" from 1974 (Gazzari's Dance Contest) and it's a soundboard with no audience.

  • Not saying I dont believe you but Trampled was off Physical 1975. Was it released on a 45 before that, or like the song Houses of The Holy, was it suppose to be on an earlier Zep album?

  • What?

  • How the fuck can you say that? Michael and Uli were a WHOLE different trip on guitar. Ed doesn't play minor/harmonic minor/ or prhygian runs. Ed plays ED! Mike and Uli are two of my favorite guitarists, but Ed blazes his own trails!

  • I mean early Schenker and I'm not talking about Eddies

tricks! He admitted copying a few thing from Uli to a Japanese Friend of mine who makes custom guitars. He knows Eddie, Michael, Uli, Rudy, Iron Maiden...etc..Of course then again Eddie could have been Drunk & stoned out of his mind!

don't get me wrong I've always respected Eddies Playing!

    Have a nice day :)

  • eddie vh is the greatest of alltime

  • EVH is the king of metal solos

  • Always cool to hear what these guys sounded like when they were hungry & playing hard.

  • damn good recording for 30 years old

  • I will also pay niceley for this, and anyone with a good copy of the 25 track WB demos from '77.

  • I will pay nicely to anyone who will burn a copy of this show for me either on dvd or on cd. Let me know please!!!

  • See, this is what pisses me off: Misinformation. This song came out in 1979 not 1976. Rock Music changed night and day between those years. Get your freakin facts straight dude.

  • This was from a live tour bootleg in 1976 that I downloaded, it's not a studio recording. I have the whole set list on my computer, if you believe the person I downloaded this LIVE material from to be incorrect then fine, you know best...

  • I never said it 'came out' in 1976.

  • My bad, it was 1978, which was still light years different from 1976 in Rock years.

  • They were still touring in smaller places a few years before that, this bottleg is from an earlier live tour before they released the album in 1978.

  • A lot of Van Halen songs that appeared on the albums were actually written and performed years before VH1 even came out.

You can tell by the sound that this is '76 or '77 at the very latest.

  • I stand corrected.

  • @zulubeat "78 and 76 light years different?" ever heard of the band KISS they sounded pretty similar in 76 and 78, also you dont know about Van Halen at all, most of the songs on Van Halen 1 and 2 were already written and played before they made it big in 78, so get you freakin facts straight

  • Also, this version of the song is different from the one released on the 1978 album - there are a few differences in the song structure. This version is identical to the one on the 1977 Simmons demo tape.

I like how Edward isn't playing those tapping fills that made it to the debut album - keeping his technique secret perhaps.

And damn, his tone is killer!

  • too bad it came out in 1978 huh?

  • @zulubeat VH 1 came out in 78 Not 79 This was on VH1. VH2 cameout in 79. This is not from VH1 but a live show Talk about misinformation???

  • @zulubeat

Dont think thats true my friend. and I can think worse things that would piss a person off. These songs were written in bits and pieces over the years. paricularly this one. And song was officially "realeased" in February 1978 on VH1

  • @zulubeat VH1 came out in 1978.

  • @zulubeat get a freakin life and get your facts straight dude

  • @zulubeat hey dickhead this was on VH1 which was released Aug of 1977...idiot

  • @zulubeat Dumb Ass! Stfu this is from there club days, and this concert took place back in 1976 prbly in bar stfu serisouly get your facts straight!

  • @zulubeat You're wrong. Stick to something you know about, perhaps marbles. lol

  • Pretty good, but is it really live? Funny I don't hear the audience.

  • Might be recorded through the board. That would explain hearing the announcer but not a bunch of ambient shit.

Van Halen sans Ted Templeman eh? Rough, but mind blowing shit for 1976. I wonder what those Disco geeks thoght when they VH?

Saturday Night Fever indeed...pass me the JD and give me a light for this fucking joint.

  • Yes recorded through the board most probably like alot of shows can be.

  • I prefer the solo from the album more, but this version is interesting.

  • this is so f*cking cool...i almost like the way they sing this better than the version we all know

  • Dave's voice sounds great.

  • Ha Ha

  • Where was this recorded? I havn't heard this one before!! Awesome!!

  • Michael Anthony could sure hit some high notes for such a fat fucker.
