the way i see it is if a person says a race term like oriental is meant to be hurtful then it shouldn't be aloud but if it is being used just as a term its fine
calling an African Americans colored isn't always raciest (naacp- national association of the advancement of colored people)
i believe that part of it is that oriental is supposed to be used only for objects (i.e. not people). and asian is to be used for people (although..."asian" can also be used to refer to objects, i think.)
Umm and by the way the NAACP was started back in like 1950 or 60 so they were called that at that time. Don't call African Americans colored people because its not right. It is still not appropriate.
I call them asian, but if they freak out that you called them oriental, then they could not be so sensitive =P obviously he didnt mean it in a rascist way, so it's her fault.

It's as archaic as calling a black person a "colored" person. The politically correct term is Asian, I believe. Can anyone back me up?
