  • I spin out at that part in GT5 all the time.

  • wtf was a beetle doing there?

  • so did the brakes cause the spin... like the braking caused a weight shift to the front tires, which then gave more grip to turning and also lost grip in the back which caused the slide?

  • Looks like a bitch of a tough corner = off camber and downhill? But can't 'second-guess' your decision once committed and stab at the brakes like that, all doubtful and ambivalent. It's where a bit o' courage and sum confidence would come in real handy, huh?

    -

That VW sauntering along 30 seconds later = too funny! Why pay 10+ pounds to take a Bug on 'the Ring' when one could drive like that through any school zone?!

  • thats why you dont touch the brake going into a corner

  • lol that bug coming aside very peacefully..he didn't enter the track after that round again i guess x-)

  • Sorry to see what happened though. Looks like was too far on the inside so he had to step hard on the brakes to avoid understeer

  • I love how the previously passed-up old-school bug passes by like the driver's saying "Ha ha! Slow cars FTW!"

  • this looks like a dangerous part of the track. You can´t see how sharp this corner really is. Thank god that this barrier barely covers the impact area. I feel sorry for this guy, it´s hard to find a good MR2 these days.

  • It is not wise to park your on the outside of the corner where the MR2 has just hit as another guy might just crash there as well. If you really want to help park on the inside.

  • @crx1299 ... And then run across the track, where other cars are guaranteed to be? Just after a blind crest? :|

  • That's why I only gas my mr2 in the srt8's!!!

  • this make so much sense, thanks

  • @Chriswatts56 in all honestly though, if you are going to one of the best tracks in the world you better have your car ready for it.

  • Those MR2 hard to drive and unpredictable with both traccion and engine on the back!! Big Impact!!

  • Quite a big impact. Tyre wall did it's job.

  • ooh ouch! turned in too early, stay out for as long as you can. Never squared the corner off.

  • bet u dont eaither pimpin

  • expensive!!!!!

  • POW RIGHT IN THE KISSER!

  • That shows the crash barriers doing a great job. To be able to walk away after hitting a barrier at what must have been 70+mph, BACKWARDS!

It also demonstrates a handling trate of the MR2. Bloody good cars.

  • Dude locked up.

  • Need a stiff/better suspension.

  • How often do they come up to that blind turn on the inside and get a shock, jerk the steering and have a nice oversteer crash

  • Pleased no one got hurt.....I couldn't help noticing the humorous 'hare and tortoise' moment though as the old Renault 4CV potters past the incident at about 40 mph. Hope he got the car fixed ok.

  • It says in the description. The car was a write off.

  • @p6ulo renault?! isn't that the 'vw bug' he passed before?

  • I've heard the same question many times, "what did you do... Where did you go??" Well Mr StealthSpankaMonkey, for the record - By the time I had exited my car, I could see my other two MR2 friends running back towards John's car. I then fulfilled the other role - running back up the track round the blind bend crash-helmet held in the air (the 'Ring symbol to other drivers that there was an accident ahead) - and then awaited the track stewards arrival

  • There's always someone who thinks they know better...Anyway, good to see your mate was ok, was he covered by insurance?

  • As it happens... He Was! At the time, the special "MR2 Drivers Club" Insurance policy covered track useage - and so the cost of the car, Recovery to the UK, Hire car, and some 10,000Eur of barrier was covered... Very Lucky! All UK insurance and road-recovery policies now exclude track useage - some exclude the Nurburgring by name...

  • Jesus that was a result! Thats what's been putting me off track days/trips; all the additional costs involved. I'll have a look at doing it via a club.

  • shite driving... careless overtaking, too fast, braking in wrong point,

cock should not have been going so fast in a shite car... or even on the track

if i was the insurance co, i would dismiss this claim. it was no accident, just shite driving.....

  • yeah it looked pretty powerful.

i would have said about 240 because you can tell it was tuned.

  • sorry bout ur loss respect x

    nice car to bout 190bhp?

  • Revision3 MR2 Turbos are 241Bhp from factory... John's was mildly tweaked - probably running ~280Bhp at the flywheel

  • MAN thats powerful in a car like that respect x

  • Sorry to hear about your pal passing away buddy :( hopefully he led a good life full of many exciting times like these laps around the ring :)

  • man that thing slammed pretty hard ! he was pretty lucky he didnt roll over ;)

  • hey, what kind of series is this? I'm still 18 but I look forward to race in something like this in the future, looks quite fun!

  • Its not a series... Its an open track day at Nurburgring. I believe it is like 20 euros per lap if you buy 4 laps.

It is a purpose built race track turned toll road and it is one of the premier testing grounds for BMW, Mercedes, and a few other German Auto Makers.

  • I've gone through Schwedenkreuz many time and seen more than one car parked along the side of the track after doing this exact same thing. That cresting left hand turn grabs many by surprise...

  • Honestly, it looked like the situation caught him a little by surprise.

  • Nice Car (Wreck)

  • man, this video scares me! I think twice before taking my MR2 to the track...

  • Don't let this scare you... The MR2 is enormously fun on a race track - It's just that this one is rather unforgiving of mistakes. John (the guy driving that MR2) came back to the 'Ring a year later in his new car - an RX7 FD3S

  • Thanks for posting, I would like a turbo version.

  • Looking at the video he was breaking just fine into the bend, but then the bend swooped downwards. This put sudden extra stress on the car to pull it off the road. It is this sudden change that caused the problem. I always remember having to drive the mr2 smoothly. Here he is driving it smoothly but made the mistake of breaking as he topped a bend with a crest. Something to watch out for in cars that break away very fast.

  • I enjoyed my time driving my MK II Mr2. It was certainly more difficult to handle than other cars, but great once you mastered it. The problem was that it went without warning, usually when doing something less than ideal like breaking mid bend. And when it went - boy it went quick! I can remember leaving my breaking way too late once in the wet and lost it real quick - I only just caught it and had to do so instantly. I remember that moment in awe on my reactions - but no so to get into it.

  • I had to lol when that little white beatle that you overtook goes chugging past after the crash..

  • Yeh.. That's why I didn't trim the video sooner lol...

  • wats the camera car?

  • Another MR2 Turbo...

  • yeh it sure is bad he passed away. this is not the issue. nor would i mock someones death. my point still stands. the fact he came off the anchors at :40 doesnt change the fact he was on them too long. spunktrumpet.

  • I think we can conclude that caprisierra24v is indeed a lonely attention freak -- and perhaps a little 'Backward' as it is clear it cannot read. Perhaps when it reaches puberty, gets a job and can afford the car of its dreams -- then it can visit the 'Ring for real rather than dreaming all day on Playstation.

  • Maybe, maybe not. More than likely not. But i am right!

  • Well... you can see the wheels turn into the slide ~0.59 but this would not help without a bit of gas!

  • inexperience of the track, blind corner, didnt realise how sharp it was, natural reaction was too brake, easily done that, hope didnt hit the old pocket to hard, im going next summer, cant wait!

  • That looks like quite the armco bill.

  • It was... But fortunately his car insurance covered it. These days the Nurburgring is explicitly excluded in most accident and roadside-recovery policies in the UK.

  • Did he die on that accident? :O

  • No.

The title of the video is "MR2 Nurburgring Crash 2001" and John left us in 2006. John purchased a FD3S Rx7 following the loss of the MR2 and returned to the 'ring several times. You can't keep an enthusiast away!

  • sorry to hear about your friend. good vid though

  • Well said.

  • Not always. Did you ever hear about trail braking? Still, he should have not braked while turning in Schwedenkreuz or even lifted. Given that he braked there, I'm sure he knew the speed would put him into the armco anyway.

  • sorry bowt ya mate that was a hard hit

  • lol...lol...that corner is off camber any braking on it throws your back end round and u can see the result

  • Did the mis-shift?

  • wow I thought you flipped!!! till I saw the zoom shot, and saw you reverse into that wall goin hella fast. GLAD YOU'RE OK!!! man that car was soo nice.. I wish my mr2 WASNT red... shoot I wanna run my car on Nurburgring :(

  • When you push it hard sometimes metal gets bent, but if you dont push it hard, whats the point?Sorry about your friends passing. On a side note,it seems really crazy to me for cars and bikes to be on the track at the same time.Maybe just me but seems like really bad things would happen, alot.

  • He braked too late for the corner and those MR2's suffered from snap oversteer if I remember rightly.

  • He was lucky here! After spinning he reversed into the wall with 60 mph, sick!

I haven't raced on the nurburgring, but I can see that it's a tricky corner, especially with an MR2.

  • WOW. Awesome Renault4CV at 0:15 and 1:25 (lol)

    I love those cars

  • haha yeah that kinda threw me off a little bit...

  • A true petrol head. Just come back from there.

Didn't know of his passing. RIP John.

  • John passed away in 2006 after an illness. He will be greatly missed by his family, daughters, grand children, and all of his car club friends, both MR2 and RX7.

    Paul Port

  • Johns car was recovered back to the UK thanks to the then excellent MR2 Drivers Club Insurance Policy. The Gen3 Turbo engine eventually returned to Germany to be transplanted into a Left-Hand-Drive MR2!

John and I returned to the Nurburgring with the club a year later (2002), me still in my Blue MR2 Turbo, John in his new toy, a Black Mazda FD3 RX7! Such was his love of cars, and the Nurburgring.

  • Before you ask....

I could see John was OK, and that my friends in the other Grey MR2 had stopped and were running back to his assistance. I headed back up the road to warn / slow other drivers down in case there was anything slippery on the road it's self. Seeing such an accident on only my second lap of the north-loop gave me great respect for the road!
