(spoiler) "...no one would ever pay twenty-five cents to stand in the rooms he grew up in. The shotgun would ignite, and Ella Mae would scream, but Robert Ford would only lay on the floor and look at the ceiling, the light going out of his eyes before he could find the right words."
"Edward O'Kelly came up from Bachelor at 1pm on the 8th. He had no grand scheme, no strategy, no agreement with higher authorities, nothing beyond a vague longing for glory and a generalized wish for revenge against Robert Ford."
This must be one of the greatest cameo roles of all time. Love it as he walks up the snow covered street. His wide eyed expression and the little pause before he steps into the saloon are just great. "Hello Bob!"
"There would be no eulogies for Bob, no photographs of his body would be sold in sundries stores, no people would crowd the streets in the rain to see his funeral cortege, no biographies would be written about him, no children named after him, no one would ever pay twenty-five cents to stand in the rooms he grew up in. "
He was ashamed of his persiflage, his boasting, his pretensions of courage and ruthlessness; he was sorry about his cold-bloodedness, his dispassion, his inability to express what he now believed was the case- that he truly regretted killing Jesse, that he missed the man as much as anybody
@johnplayersstandard the point of the movie is that Ford was about as much as a killer as James was a "hero." The only difference is how history will remember you. Jesse James killed more men than probably his whole ganged combined. So who is the real coward?
You know what I expected? Applause. I was only 20 years old then, I couldn't see how it would look to people. I was surprised by what happened. They didn't applaud.
I love this soundtrack but I've never seen the movie. After reading everyone's comments, I am definitely going to watch this movie real soon. The music is so beautiful. I sat here and just listened to it, letting it wash over me. I'm so glad I heard about this :)
See it as a documentary not as a action/drama movie, the historical facts are worth the viewing if you are at all interested in Jesse James from an historical perspective. I think the movie is haunting and makes you feel for Jesse as well of Bob Ford.
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen and that's saying something. I'm not some Michael Bay kid who doesn't pay attention to movies and likes explosions. Of course explosions are good IF they're necessary. Inception is a good movie and an example of meaningful explosions and not some Transformers whatever.
I love this movie and I will love it until the day that I die.
Whenever I hear this track, it send shivers down my spine. It's not just beautiful, it's majestic. It's something that epitomes the meaning of "music". If I die, and heaven exists, I wish this tune would carry me there.
@markpetejr first time i heard it, my eyes welled up and the back of my neck tingled. i feel so sorry for people who cant feel music. it is absolute f*****g genius!

why is FBI agent Melvin Purvis not considered a "coward" for shooting John Dillinger in the back of the head when he came out of the theater..? Dillinger was noted as the Jesse James of the 1930's...? what makes Jesse so special?
@SlingBlade79 Well the fact that Purvis was doing it in the line of duty, being an agent means he wasn't participating in the same illegal activities as Robert Ford was with Jesse James. However, I do find Jesse James being held in such high esteem disturbing, I don't get why people think he's so amazing.
@zues770 I did not think of that, Purvis was on duty as the First FBI agent. And your right, Jesse is a legend, but an infamous one, one that shot and killed people, unarmed people. why people hold him in such regard is beyond me. If I was one of the 17 familys of the MURDERED, I would have made Robert Ford the hero.. Jesse had friends in the newspaper business that made him look like a robin hood. But like someone else has said, history almost always makes the villain into the hero,
@SlingBlade79 I thought the movie was fairly even-handed. When I watched it I felt like Bob was doing what he had to, and I was frankly glad Jesse was dead. It felt very real in that no one was really the hero, and everything just got kind of fucked up in the end. I guess that treatment is sort of nihilistic in a way. Incredible movie.
@Uberslug you know , you are probably the first person I have seen say that the way you did... I like how you put it. no one was the hero. in the end everything was messed up... nice.. :-)
reveal their characters. the plot is pretty simple. Robbers and revenge, family and friends. its simple dynamics that add interesting subtexts to the characters. The director knew before hand that the only way his story would be deemed believable was for us as the audience to believe Jesse was a good man seeking a peaceful end to his tumultuous life and that Bob was a simpleton w/ inabilities to do big things. The crux of the story is that: "Nothing good can come of inherently bad actions".
I've admitted this on other message boards. It took me a total of 3 attempts to get through this film. The story evolves in such a slow fashion it is nearly unbearable to get through the entire film w/out falling asleep unless of course you're strung up on caffeine or inertia alone. However, once I did manage to finish it. I could only love it. I love good movies, interesting stories, good solid acting, no show boating or silly special effects. This film is driven by its actors ability to slowly
@kurt2rsenjazz you don't hear about it in conversation about movies...it wasn't talked about for long. It faded into the rack with all the other movies yet....it is one of the best movies, one of the best scores and still it has just fell out of peoples minds. It's one of my favorite movies with Brad Pitt and one of my favorite scores of a movie of all time.
One of the beauties about the Jesse James story, is that in real life the title of this movie is also correct exactly the other way around; it was not just Bobby who assassinated Jesse, but also Jesse who, willingly and knowingly, 'assassinated' Bobby. Now that is irony for you.
@nevereverguess all great art is ironic. A true artist sees the unseen, and glorifies it. I am sick about the fact that the hoi polloi glorify people like Jesse James; never understanding that such bullies are true villians. As presented in the film, James craved death. That is why he was so cavalier with the lives of his mates. My study of history leads me to believe that his end came much too late.
@NightPipes420 okay, however good the movie is or whatever, that was a dick move to insult Em like that, he's a great artist. yes, the user was obviously trying to get a thumbs up but out of line comment, that fag boy you're referring too has good taste to use this sample in his song.
@NightPipes420 Seems like your music taste doesnt bring you the humble way to understand art. Some people think M&M is better than this, some people think this is better than M&M. No one is right or wrong; its a question of taste (wich comes from each ones personal identification). It's a shame that some people allways see what they like as supreme and ultimate. You shouldnt think its better just because you like it, theres people who like M&M too and that doesnt mean hes better than everything.
Due to Jesse James' inexplicable popularity and charisma, the public itself labeled Robert a coward. That's how he "went down in History". I think that's the only thing being suggested in the title, because the movie itself doesn't really make either character seem more or less villainous than the other.
Bob Ford was, indeed, a coward. He was just a little more of a coward than Jessy James, another infamous back-shooter, and a little less of a coward than the guy who shot Bob by the end. That's what the irony in the title hints to. It's not meant to say Jessy James is the bad guy and Bob Ford the villain. It's about all the back-shooting
This song is incredible. I cant explain how or why it is, but I think it might be one of the best Ive ever heard. Gives you that feeling deep in your stomach.
Its insane that Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber sell so many records and make so much money when something like this exists.
Bad Romance has 398 Million views and this only has 430,000. How is this even possible?
I would trade this one song for all of the popular music around today
Stupid people should stop tripping on the word "coward" and realize it's an ironic title that portrays the view of the world, in direct and obvious contrast with the view of the director, which portrays Bob OTHER than a coward.
How could any one find this movie boring it's by far one of my favorites and keep in mind that he wasn't in the prime of robing and what not near the end of his life so why would you expect a large amount of action hell this movie helps put me to bed some nights.
I can talk for my self and say that i would not shoot a man in the back with his kids in the yard after he put a roof over my head and food in my gut you people can say other but i know for a fact i wouldn't and robert ford is a coward who shoots a man in the back!!!!!
Love the song. Brings a tear to my eye, and shivers to my neck! Poor Bob :( Just wanted recognition from his hero (villain)! My only critisism is that whoever recorded this audio got a message on Steam at 5:00. I'm at work and everytime it gets to that point, I keep looking to see who messaged me! I don't even have Steam on this computer!!!!
the movie was quite deep indeed, it gets a bit comfusing sometimes and if u didnt like it its mostly because you didnt understand any of the metaphors and hidden ideas.
after 3:30 it seems like the string section and the piano are wailing with sorrow. this is an incredible piece of music. its hard to stop listening to. makes you feel really bad for Bob, who lived the rest of his life being looked at as a coward and recieving death threats on a regular basis.
This is one of the most under appreciated films I have ever seen. It is possibly one of the best. Great performance by Brad Pitt and Casey Afleck,
The musically score is another story. The music by itself is amazing. It is the first soundtrack off of a movie I actually bought. Well worth the money,
But then again, who's to say I'm not biased, because I am from Missouri. :)
@killmefornothing No you're right pal. There really are no words to describe this movie. The cinematography, the acting and the music just create an atmosphere i've never felt from a film. I'm with you 100% And I'm from nowhere near Missouri. Though I would like to visit one day.
Every time I listen to this it reminds me of Eminem - Space Bound weird I know its the piano, what an amazing film and soundtrack words cant explain the feelings I get from this movie. (thanx for uploading this btopsmoviechannel)
@ayansb i listen 2 eminem's song several times, but i can't find any resembles to this song. also according wikipedia "space bound" features an interpolation from "drive" by r.e.m, which wasn't however credited in the album liner notes, but i could hear some similar melody tunes between the 2 song
@matthewwilliams0710 totally agree you can almost doze off in some parts but then there are just some truely magical captivating scenes which make you stay fixed and then you finish watching it and just think... genius.
Both Jesse And Robert i would consider to be heroes, But heroes in different peoples eyes with different reasons. Easy way to look at it. Amazing film

It's about all the back-shooting

the piano needs to be louder toward the end because it sounds amazing

This song made me want to want to watch the film... usually it's the opposite way around!
The suspense building in the strings is just so intense!

Who gives a sh i i i tttt about eminem his crap holds no comparison to Nick or Warren
NightPipes420 6 months ago
Stupid people should stop tripping on the word "coward" and realize it's an ironic title that portrays the view of the world, in direct and obvious contrast with the view of the director, which portrays Bob OTHER than a coward.

Can't call the man a coward ,it didn't seem easy for him. Loved the movie ,that scene was gold.
AmountainLion3 6 months ago
@AmountainLion3 No..no I don't think he was a coward either. No more than would be a soldier in war following orders. How about a bomber pilot?

How could any one find this movie boring it's by far one of my favorites and keep in mind that he wasn't in the prime of robing and what not near the end of his life so why would you expect a large amount of action hell this movie helps put me to bed some nights.
johnplayersstandard 7 months ago
I can talk for my self and say that i would not shoot a man in the back with his kids in the yard after he put a roof over my head and food in my gut you people can say other but i know for a fact i wouldn't and robert ford is a coward who shoots a man in the back!!!!!
johnplayersstandard 7 months ago
@johnplayersstandard A coward would have never pulled the trigger. Could you have?

@95eisblume95 Not enough "shoot 'em up" scenes? Not enough action for ya? You don't like a movie where you actually have to use your brain ?
NightPipes420 7 months ago

Love the song. Brings a tear to my eye, and shivers to my neck! Poor Bob :( Just wanted recognition from his hero (villain)! My only critisism is that whoever recorded this audio got a message on Steam at 5:00. I'm at work and everytime it gets to that point, I keep looking to see who messaged me! I don't even have Steam on this computer!!!!

after 3:30 it seems like the string section and the piano are wailing with sorrow. this is an incredible piece of music. its hard to stop listening to. makes you feel really bad for Bob, who lived the rest of his life being looked at as a coward and recieving death threats on a regular basis.

killmefornothing 8 months ago
@killmefornothing No you're right pal. There really are no words to describe this movie. The cinematography, the acting and the music just create an atmosphere i've never felt from a film. I'm with you 100% And I'm from nowhere near Missouri. Though I would like to visit one day.

haha, i just realised eminem's space bound uses the same chord progression, it's not as achingly beautiful but it still gets the same emotions across
tremalow 8 months ago 3
@tremalow Great observation, cause according to Wikipedia "Space Bound" features an interpolation of "Song for Bob" by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis."
ayansb 7 months ago
@ayansb i listen 2 eminem's song several times, but i can't find any resembles to this song. also according wikipedia "space bound" features an interpolation from "drive" by r.e.m, which wasn't however credited in the album liner notes, but i could hear some similar melody tunes between the 2 song
mistertrailerpark1 7 months ago
@mistertrailerpark1
It's the chord progression. It's similar and sped up in Space Bound
djxmonster 6 months ago
@mistertrailerpark1 listen to the piano starting 2.15, it's the same melody as the vocals in the chorus of space bound

@matthewwilliams0710 totally agree you can almost doze off in some parts but then there are just some truely magical captivating scenes which make you stay fixed and then you finish watching it and just think... genius.

"By the Coward Robert Ford.."
Coward..?
Perhaps, but that's just the human nature. Most of us would have done the same Robert Ford did, no doubt.
Robert has my empathy.
History always favors the villains.
