15th May 2010 - Sadly today we lost Harry. He wasdiagnosed with a tumour 3 weeks ago and so we brought him home for lots of love and affection until it was time to say goodbye. I didn't register him as Feorag Happy Harry for no reason. He was simply the happiest cat I'd ever met. There was no nastiness in him whatsoever and all our other cats loved him.
RIP my beautiful boy and I just know you're still chasing hosepipes in another world.
This is one of my fave Somali vids of all time. And I'm sure Harry is giving St.Peter a good time chasing hosepipes at the Rainbow bridge. Thank you for sharing him with us all.
@Dethancooper Thank you so much for that - it was a lovely thing to say and for me to read. He was the kitten i never intended to keep - someone had been waiting for a male of that colour from me for over a year, so he was bookmarked for her.
However............ he was a single kitten and in his mother's eyes, boring. So she carried him into our bed every night from the day he was born. He didn't thrive like other kittens and so I had to top him up with a bottle.
Here's a bit more for you...after the last of our cats passed on, Harry and Teddy were the two Somalis that caught my eye the most. Along with Turkish Angora, they are my fave cats (we have 1 of each).
@feorag Very sorry for your loss. I recently lost my Abyssinian after 14 years, and HE was the happiest cat I've ever known. He loved EVERYbody he ever met, and purred at least 70% of his waking hours. I've lived with dozens of cats in my life, and known countless more of all types, and mine was truly one of a kind. But I suspect I'm not the only one to say that about my beloved best buddy. I am looking into getting a Somali to share my next 14 years (and hopefully longer).
@MaxPaws My first cat since my childhood was an Aby and it was his fault (lol) that I ended up with so many cats - he just totally chrmed me with his intelligence and loving ways. I was made up when I discovered I could get the same cat but with long hair. I lost him just 2 months before his 17th birthday and it hurt like mad, but losing Harry's mother was the hardest - she was my soul mate in every way and I absolutely adored her.
eileen one of your favourite boys has been watching his uncle harry. how sad am i . they love listening to utubes meowing cats and I put in on for them. Hope u r all well. Simba and Sanni were on itv ne. I sent photos in for a slot a few months ago and of course they are so handsome they got picked. H
How nice to hear from you Hilda. I thought about you a few months ago when I was trying to find a new home for one of Simba's sisters whose owners couldn't keep her! Fancy not telling me your boys were going to be on ITV news! Tut tut!!!
GOD SAKE!. i dont know u dudes. but i know that there are some somali cats that come from somalia. it just so happens that we made some in europe, is that such a crime?
Somali cats are from Somalia. I know cause i am Somali and i have seen them there. There are so many different breeds because European colonists who came to Somalia like the British and others deported them back to their countries to breed them. That is why there are so many European breeds of Somali cats. There was also a lot if European turrets in the 70's and 80's who use to go to Somalia to buy Somali cats to breed them in their countries and sale them.
As I've said earlier, there will be cats in Somalia, I'm not disputing that, but pedigree Somali Cats are a man made breed and named by the originators of the breed. They are not from imported cats from Somalia. Their pedigrees can be traced back and they don't go back to Somalian cats.
somalis are NOT from somalia! people need to look that up! it annoys the shit outta me when people say they're from somalia when they're history CLEARLY says that they were simply named that way!!!
They're a pedigree cat and were bred from Abyssinian cats (which is now Ethiopia, so the name Somali was chosen to show the close relationship between the 2 breeds.
If that's true, then you have a wild cat from Somalia - not a pedigree Somali cat, because, as I've already said the name was made up, not because the cats come from Somalia.
Yes, Somalis (and Abyssinians-genetically the same breed the only difference is hair length)love water. And you're right he's a ruddy. Here in England we call them "usual" and the ones you call red we call "sorrel" because we also have red Somalis, as in ginger, not cinnamon.
I have loads of pictures of ruddy Somalis if you would like to use them. I think you can send me a private message through my link and if you send me your e-mail address we can discuss photographs privately off this site.
Very sweet, my cat's name is Harry too!

He remained the smallest kitten we had ever bred until he was about 9 months old and then he just grew and grew.
Parting with single kittens is very hard, but there was no way that I could ever have parted with him - he was just so very special.

Harry was her double and that was why he was so special to me as well.
For months after I lost his mother I would catch a glimpse of Harry and my heart would lift because I thought it was Sorcha!
Losing him was losing her all over again - so very hard!
