back in the mid 90's I managed to sneak into the Footwork garage in Montreal for a few minutes during an engine run up. Even with several thousand less revs than today's engines it was ear splittingly painful and one of the coolest things I've ever got to hear.
@XxWraithlordxX no kidding. it's no wonder those are open cockpit cars. if they weren't the driver would cook alive and be dead not long into the race. it also doens't surprise me how fires can start on these cars if the exhaust gets that hot, can only imagine how the engine gets even with the cooling it has.
I thought I had lost some hearing from racing years ago. AA fuel, I just worked on it never drove. Went to a serious ear Dr. for another problem and he found stuff stuck and kind of growning on the drum. He removed it and perfect hearing. The ears will take a lot of punishment and come back.
sounds like its barking it revs so fast...yeah, dundun you've never rebuilt one of those; setting the timing on my friends open-header 351 near killed me
"The ones with their fingers in their ears are pansy asses." Accept for they are smart. An open header engine like that can get in excess of 160dB enough to make you not only go deaf but probably bleed from the ears. Your also full of crap about building engines like that too because you would know they have hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of sensory equipment there, not a single mechanic there would be stupid enough to "soak up the beautiful sound."
No, he's probably the one that put the thing together. I build engines too, I know exactly why he is standing there like that. We like to listen to our work when complete; we listen for irregular or bad sounds as well as the good ones resulting from our hard work and attention to detail. The ones with their fingers in their ears are pansy asses. I'd be there soaking up the beautiful noise like a sponge. F1 ROCKS!
Agreed. I mean this whole show is cool and fascinating and all, but that's one of the least "powerful" F1 engines. This must have been arrows circa 2001-2002
Thats not idle. They're using a constant rev rage to get the engine up to the proper temp. You'll notice that later in the video they let the revs fall down below what they were at the start.
the best part is in the beginning that thats about 5000 revs....about an eigth of what it can really produce

Id give anything to be able to take an f1 car out and rip on a track for a few hours. Better save my lunch money.

That makes my hairs stand up on the back of my neck!. What an awesome sound. The sound of an F1 engine never disappoints me. ;-)

Check the guy standing to the right with his arms crossed, he's either deaf, has ear plugs in or is going to be profoundly deaf!
