Of course, they don't bother to tell you that that dating was used to test the viability of the potassium-argon method on lava flows that had erupted in the ocean, thus preventing the free argon to escape while the magma was still liquid.
You are correct! The lava age could have come from when it was formed below the earth's surface, I suppose. Gotta look that one up and see when the "start date of rock formations" with regards to radiometric dating is valid.
