Twitter might be able to provide a service were people pay to be in a featured section, that way its more likely someone will follow them, or they can work like Google and have a "sponsored links" like section when people search various keywords, people could pay to be at the top of the list etc

I would love to fight this argument and defeat it, but, well I think you might have a valid point, the only twitter website with ads right now is twitter Japan, so only one of it's websites is making money, not much though and sure even i use a desktop client (twhirl), it would seem that there was a poor business plan here for a good idea, a bit like youtube. maybe twitter can sell itself to a social networking site or to a major company, maybe Microsoft (but not really windows live twitter?)

I've never been paticularly comfortable with the idea of twitter. TBH I really don't want to know what exactly my friend are doing all the time nor can I imagine why they would want to know that much about me either. I'd rather live life as it is then report in about it every several minutes. I'll just summarize about it later in my vlog. If twitter dies then I probably won't notice it.

twitter can make money thru advertising much in the same way that google makes money. well targeted ads for the individual based on their posting habits and keywords in tweets, which will again rais the question of privacy but ti think we should all come to the realization that privacy is an illusion. how to present the ads is another question itself, I am opposed to unwanted tweets but I think email offers and special twitter client discounts can be the savior. I use twitter, I think they are ok. I started when it first came out.. in 2004ish or something, was getting good, alot has added and quit others and finally use twitter but some use it here and there

Yeah, but you're forgetting that Facebook is a website that people HAVE to visit to use, not a service like Twitter. With twitter it's just "tweets" sent to a server from any client that can send them, be it the actual site or third party apps like Howard mentioned. Facebook isn't like that.
