@mathyu0179 In a straight line? With their huge amounts of displacement and forced induction, yes. But American cars are very scared of anything close to a curve. I'd love to see a muscle car attempt to go around a track.
@rminb010204 Americans use bulldozers to move mountains and hills so that the roads are relatively straight. We don't need cars with 1 liter engines for negotiating old, guardrailess roads.
They don't sound like an "American V8" because they have a flat plane crank, no counter weight = faster engine response and higher revs. That counter balanced cross plane crank gives you that low rumbly noise in American v8's.
I'm personally a fan of mid to high pitched engines.
@1stSgtSoulStealer American "muscle" cars are more like pansies who need huge amount of displacement to get any sort of power. The sound reminds me of a fat-ass American after having a meal that can kill a horse. "Fart-Fart -Fart." Since a Ferrari can pass the 6k rpm threshold you know it doesn't have a pathetic excuse of an engine. What are you going to do next, call me gay for hating country music? You hick.
@flanksteak1 So, a Ferrari 458 (with a 4.5l V8) produces 562 hp with 400 lb-ft of torque. It get's 85% of that power at 3000 rpm (340). So it has a peak power range from 3200 rpm to 8400 rpm. Compare that to a Z06 with a 7.0l V8 producing 505 hp and 470 lb-ft at 5000 rpm. At 3000 rpm the Z06 produces 220 lb-ft at 3000. Torque? No problem for true Italian muscle.
@flanksteak1 It's not money we're talking about. The engineering of the car is proof that the Italians can engineer a much superior power train in a smaller package.
@rminb010204 Ah ok so money has nothing to do with what the manufacturer is able to provide you at a certain price point. We all know that Italians have problems with chest hair falling into the castings. Do you think they charge for that?
@flanksteak1 So now that you have no argument you just jump to some stereotype?
Even if money is a concern you can go out and get a used F430. 40 WHP less and you can find them as low as 120K. If you can spend 80k on a car I'm sure you can spend 120K on a car.
@rminb010204 Money is always a concern. I can afford the Corvette, I can't afford the Ferrari. FYI, the Vette is 65,000 not 80,000. For 4 times the price, I bet Chevy could add some improvements to the Vette. Don't you think?
@rminb010204 Certainly you wouldn't argue that a manufacturer who gives you leather interior over cloth for 4 times the price is actually getting you the nicer finish because they are better at designing interiors than the manufacturer who is providing with cloth and that price plays no role, so why would you argue that Chevy is bad at engineering because their horsepower per liter is lower when the Vette is 4 times cheaper than the Ferrari?
@rminb010204 Just as a another FYI, I would never spend more than 5k on a new car. I own a couple classics (AMERICAN) classics. Airplanes are my hobby. People with nice cars buy them simply to drive around to show people how much money they have since you cannot drive a Ferrari or the Vette to it's full potential on the street there is no reason to even have a car with that much performance. HAVE A NICE DAY!
@flanksteak1 Those people are obnoxious. There are plenty of nice cars out there that they can drive to "show off." If they offered me a Ferrari F430 with the body of an Accord on it I'd happily accept. There are raceways where these cars can show their true colors. I live in Washington and only 20 minutes from where I live there is a track called "Pacific raceways." That's where Ferraris and Corvettes need to be.
@flanksteak1 Amen to that brother. These "exotic" cars sound like babys blowing farts with their lips...American Muscle V-8 sounds like the balls have dropped and ready to take a dump all over everything else.
You just contradicted yourself, you're saying more cylinders makes it more raspy (thus more like a cross plane crank) but I'm saying the v10 sounded like a flat plane.
ye fair enough. It also depends on the design and material of the exhaust system. The exhaust system can make an engine sound like something else.....however.....no exhaust system can ever fool a well trained ear.
these ferraris are all V8's. Ye i was talking bout the ferrari. Coz when people think "V8"......they imagine the sound of a 'chev 350' or 'ford cleveland 351'...and the like.
Remeber....a V10 or V12 can not have a 'flat-plane' crankshaft.
it sounds like a goddamn 2 cycle dirt bike.

@rminb010204 Not really. We just need less RPM's to make power. We like torque and so would you if you ever experienced it.

MoPar7055 3 years ago
it sure does!........u can always tell by the sound.
marek0086 3 years ago
Some Vipers I've heard (cross plane crank) sound like they have a flat plane crank. Kind of
MoPar7055 3 years ago
thats because they are a V10!.....not V8. More cylinders.....the more "raspy" the sound.
marek0086 3 years ago
You just contradicted yourself, you're saying more cylinders makes it more raspy (thus more like a cross plane crank) but I'm saying the v10 sounded like a flat plane.
MoPar7055 3 years ago
no i didnt contradict myself...u just misunderstood what i said.
flat plane v8 gives a much more "raspy" sound than a cross plane v8.
it is not possible to have a flat-plane crank in a V10. What u meant was.....it sounded like a flat-plane cranked *V8*
marek0086 3 years ago
I think the misunderstanding is in the word raspy. This car doesn't sound raspy to me.
MoPar7055 3 years ago
ye fair enough. It also depends on the design and material of the exhaust system. The exhaust system can make an engine sound like something else.....however.....no exhaust system can ever fool a well trained ear.
marek0086 3 years ago
So you're saying that more cylinders can make it sound more like a flat plane even though its a cross plane?
MoPar7055 3 years ago
It *can*. Like i said...also depends on exhaust layout...etc. Many people would even say that this is a V12...as it sounds *similar*.
marek0086 3 years ago
What the ferrari or the Viper? How many cylinders does the Ferrari have?
MoPar7055 3 years ago
