It is only natural prison companies will sooner or later see their "victims", the public, as a sort of raw material they can process, and NOT as human beings with a dignity any more. This is truly the horror.
I am a former employee of Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility (TCCF) in Tutwiler Mississippi who is trying to bring about change. TCCF started off as a small prison in Tutwiler housing mininum security inmates. Now TCCF is the 2nd largest CCA prison housing over 2600 of the most dangerous inmates in the country from California while consistently being understaffed by over 100 officers armed with only spray and officials at the local, state and government do NOTHING.
Maybe this is why there's so many frivilous 'Domestic Violence' ''policies'' inacted- for the purpose of entraping men, to frustrate them into doing things worthy of sending them deeper into the penal system. All for greed & profit. Is anyone really surprised? Isn't this the same country that built the entire wealth of its Southern States using Slave Labor?
The equation is easy. More prisoners= money. Therefore make new prisoners out of totally innocent individuals, e.g. women who suffer from the traumatic experience of delivering still birth or other individuals that the conservatives view as their political rivals (i.e. liberals). This gives you a large prison population that you can exploit by having a slave work force, which in turn gives you power to dissolve unions, which equates to even more money and power. Yay for America.

If they WANT you in jail, for whatever reason, they can and will find a "crime" you have committed. Maybe you speed, or forgot the tax on an item. If they want to, they can use something that minor to interfere with your entire life, shut down bank accounts during the investigation, etc.

I'm usually for privatizing things but prisons should be government ran. Government's job is to protect citizens and watching over prisoners falls under that. What's next, private police forces who get money whenever they make an arrest or harass a citizen?

When I was a criminal justice major in college, my corrections professor (who was a cop for 6 years before he got his PHD in sociology) used to say "it is completely inappropriate to profit from human misery." @chrisknows There are cops in my family, good ones too. But they tell me the stories about other cops with fewer morals, who forge paperwork and criminal information, make up assaults, etc.
If they WANT you in jail, for whatever reason, they can and will find a "crime" you have committed. Maybe you speed, or forgot the tax on an item. If they want to, they can use something that minor to interfere with your entire life, shut down bank accounts during the investigation, etc.

Words like liberal and conservative becoming nearly meaningless has pitted ppl with very similar social and financial backgrounds against each other. When Cenk characterizes these ideas and policies as conservative it shields the real motivations behind them. This isn't about being conservative or "free markets", its about greed and power. I think we agree on that too.

When I was a criminal justice major in college, my corrections professor (who was a cop for 6 years before he got his PHD in sociology) used to say "it is completely inappropriate to profit from human misery." Keep that in mind - private prisons get their money from the suffering of human beings. Whether or not their criminal or "deserve it" doesn't matter, the bottom line is their lining their pockets with the tears and blood of their fellow man. Thumbs this comment up if you agree.

Yet another reason why govt shouldn't hire private companies for things it's paying for, like making sure a person gets health care, an education, or is incarcerated, they either do it themselves or they pay someone else to do it. When they pay someone else to do it, what tends to happen is they don't get their moneys worth, with a couple of companies flat out ripping the govt off.
When Sweden privatized parts of the local transit, they paid for buses that never ran etc. Companies rip us off.
