@Autumnkittykitty. Well, u should sometime it's a beautiful story that inspired me to become a geisha. Well, it's beautiful... I love the movie and the novel. Have fun!
memoirs of a geisha is just pure beauty in a film - the music is sensantional - i entered a different world when i watched it for the first time XD the book's incredable too :)
I was surprised at how well the book coincided with the movie. Not much at all was left out besides basically the very beginning about Satsu and Chiyo. Great great great song, movie, and book. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good read.
Very nicely said i love the film and Im doing a geisha theme for a university project. If anyone has not watched the film or read the book then i would really recommend that you do there worth a read or watch they have not at all missed any details out. I even gonna lend it to my nan soon ;D
most books written of the orient seem that way like Herman Hesse's Siddhartha. But this one really brought out the culture of Japan and allowed lots of readers from all over the world to appreciate it.
Kein problem. Ich bin Amerikaner. Ich kann etwas Deutsch, aber Sie sprechen English besser als ich Deutsch sprechen kann. However, I must say good guess. Wie sagt man composer auf Deutsch? (Bitte, korregieren Sie meine Fehler.)
Ok, well your vernacular English sounds pretty good "dude." By the way, using 'dude' makes you sound like a delinquent American teenager, so If you're going to use English, you might want to consider not calling people 'dude.' Got it dog? ;)
It's exactly people like you who have such limited life experience that you think a lot of people say "dude." In your very limited world, I'm sure they do.
While you're at it, learn to spell, and please learn grammar before you post: Your phrase "...dont listen to an ignorant!!, " shows that you are ignorant. Ignorant is an adjective not a noun. No one can be an "ignorant."
It is correct to use an adjective as a noun in English. It's done all the time, especially referring to categories with certain characteristics, for example: "the land of the free and the home of the brave." In this phrase, "free" and "brave" are adjectives used as nouns. Sometimes you may also refer to a single member of the group, such as "a blonde," who is a member of the category "the blondes," and who is "blonde." So someone can be "an ignorant." They just never seem to know who they are.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I never said that nouns could not function as adjectives. What I stated was ignorant "is an adjective. The rules that you described, I agree with; however, what you are implying, as you took my response out of context, is that you could take any adjective and convert it into a noun. The English language doesn't work that way. If it did, you could say, "She's an expensive." or "He's a "free." These two examples are ambiguous at best. Continue to use such ignorant English and prove my point.
this song is so fucking beautiful....it makes me feel so damn good....i think every song makes you feel special...and this song makes you feel strong...it shows the meaning of being a geisha...:)) of being an artist who has to fight because i'm shure its not easy to be a geisha
i think this movie is one of my favorites because of the meaning behind it and because of the way it portrays what a real geisha is, an artist not a prostitute, i love learning about different cultures too and japan's culture is one of my favorites
pretty sure a geisha is just a hoe with dignity, pride, and well, all that other glamorous "attributes" hidden behind the nasty, sinful things they do.
this is the most beautiful peice of music i think it sends chills down alot of peoples spine's, this movie is truly beautiful and it is definatley my all time favourite.
Geisha (芸者) or Geiko (芸妓) are traditional, female Japanese entertainers, whose skills include performing various Japanese arts, such as classical music and dance. Contrary to popular belief, geishas are not prostitutes.
geishas are piece of art, they are entertainers of wealthy and old men, they sells their skills not their bodies, remember that is what the book said about them. a common prostitute is not going to study arts, it is not going to play shamisen in front of the people to find themselves like a entertainment, think about it seriously..... ignorant people who doesn´t know nothing about geishas are going to think that they are prostitutes. it doesn´t make sense.....
Geishas are a moving piece of art, not common prostitutes. but if they sell their virginity etc very fine line, Sayuri's sister became a prostitute? not her choice. Am just asking were do you become geisha or prostitute? Am asking as a someone who does not understand.
Search "The Secret Life of Geisha-NBC" on youtube. The movie and book both are good, but they're purely fictitious and present very inaccurate depictions of traditional Japanese culture.

His book is touching, and the movie is really good, but both his book and the movie aren't exactly correct(in the sense of culture, costumes, etc)..not that you need those things, I suppose, to make a good story.
I just finished the book Iwasaki Mineko wrote not that long ago. It cleared alot of things up for me. I found the book she wrote clear alot of things up.
yeah, I read Geisha, a life after I read Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha and I liked it. I did clear a lot of things up. I love Memoirs though too.
sadly a lot of people in western society still believe Geisha to be a high class prostitute like several movies show, however they are not. Their name litterally means, "art person/doer" artist. I am happy to hear that you looked further into it.
i loved memoirs of a geisha, both the book and the movie. they were both touching and brilliant. i envy geishas since they can learn the arts and dance ^^; but just a bit. i'd love to try on some of their exquisite kimonos though! :D
yes well they dont actually get paid by there danna, they recieve gifts from there danna, like beautiful kimono and hair combs and sometimes even makeup, although makeup to them is like a bra, very personal, so they dont recieve that often haha
nothing is bad with geisha... infact the very word geisha means artist... if you read the book it explains the whold thing so i suggest you read it... they are artistic in every way and every single one of them has a story. they only sell themsevels once, for there mizuagae (virginity)
You got that wrong. HORRIBLY wrong. There's no such thing as a mizuage as described in the movie or the book. Geisha never sell their virginity, Oiran (Japanese courtesans) do. There IS a coming-of-age ceremony for Maiko when they reach puberty, but it doesn't involve selling their virginity, there's a party and gifts are received.
Well, this was a true memoir taken from a person who went through it all, wasn't it? It has to be true. Certainly, she couldn't have been lying about her past..?
This isn't. If you have the book, take a look at the acknowledgements. It's clearly stated that Sayuri and the reat are all fictional characters. Mineko Iwasaki, the former geisha whom Arthur Golden interviewed for most of the book, even filed a lawsuit against him; partly for naming her in the acknowledgements despite her demands for anonymity and partly for defaming Geisha and and Japanese culture. Look up "Mineko Iwasaki" on Wikipedia and you'll know what I mean.
No. Arthur Golden interviewed a real geiko, but he warped a lot of the facts and changed things around to make a story. He actually got sued by said geiko for defamation of character because he got it so wrong that she started receiving death threats for "helping" him with his book.
If you have the book, take a look at the acknowledgements. It's clearly stated that Sayuri and the reat are all fictional characters. Mineko Iwasaki, the former geisha whom Arthur Golden interviewed and based most of the book on, even filed a lawsuit against him; partly for naming her in the acknowledgements despite her demands for anonymity and partly for defaming Geisha and and Japanese culture. i loved memoirs of a geisha, both the book and the movie. they were both touching and brilliant. i envy geishas since they can learn the arts and dance ^^; but just a bit. i'd love to try on some of their exquisite kimonos though! :D

GEISHA
Si tan solo hubieras preguntado......
No sería difícil vestirse capa tras capa de ausencias,
cepillar los cabellos con mares de ansiedades,
alargar las uñas con esmaltes y corales,
desgastar el calzado sin pisotear los sueños,
rizar abanicos de sales, delinear espejos dormidos.

yes well they dont actually get paid by there danna, they recieve gifts from there danna, like beautiful kimono and hair combs and sometimes even makeup, although makeup to them is like a bra, very personal, so they dont recieve that often haha

nothing is bad with geisha... infact the very word geisha means artist... if you read the book it explains the whold thing so i suggest you read it... they are artistic in every way and every single one of them has a story. they only sell themsevels once, for there mizuagae (virginity)
johnnydeppgirl13 3 years ago
but also to their danna
Donnajulia 3 years ago

He actually got sued by said geiko for defamation of character because he got it so wrong that she started receiving death threats for "helping" him with his book.

your horribly wrong
