Of all the interpretations I've heard on youtube, she is second only to Richter. But I mean c'mon its Richter. Chenyin Li's is much more playful, and probably shouldn't even try to compare the two.
overall, she captures the capriciousness of the piece very well through her dynamics and phrasing. and her technique is excellent. however, i feel she could've been a little more expressive and lenient with the tempo in the slow passages...especially in the descending rolled chords at 3:35 and 4:25.
but all in all great job!! best interp i've heard on youtube!
About a year ago, seeing this video was the first time I'd ever heard this piece... I'm really glad I got to hear this amazing interpretation first, rather than some of the other crapola that's on youtube... Great Job :D
nice job. I think some areas were rushed a little bit too much, but bravo for a live performance. I"m working on this for graduate school auditions in two weeks.
slug182 we're not meant to clap in between movements, unless the performer plays a single movement from the whole piece. However, I agree with clap clap BRAVO!

@mozart20dlubos The piece sounds hard to play, but when I got the music I sightread through it and for the first few lines I thought "Oh goody! This isn't as hard as I thought!" Then it got really hard....and then after (an hour of) getting through the whole thing, I listened to the video again and nearly passed out. lol
Her versatile tone color shows real mastery.she makes it more interesting than just one piano sounds like bells, tambourines, drums. She's got a lot of touches & attacks.Great playing!
Also, I find that the tempo is a little metronomic for me. Considering how clearly technically proficient she is, I wish she would take a little more time and be more generally "playful" with the many fun moments in the piece.
The technique is awesome but I think the whole piece is played too loud and raw. This is supposed to be Spanish style "guitar music" but the pianiast's exaggerated dynamics make it sound like Prokofiev
@jamiemanners I couldn't agree more. The title literally translates to "Morning Song of the Jester" (or more specifically, Aubade of the Jester). I understand she's going for a classical guitar kinda style, but not all classical guitar is sharp and percussive.

its kinda depressing to watch this seeing how shes so good i mean im twelve and i'm no good! i cant get past the first 30 seconds of this piece!! shes so good amazing technique!!!
Ending after sec arpeggio and big pause .. is nearly perfect in all details.. and very exciting.. really played this well .. what could be better? go absolutely nuts with the final 4 measures like Richter.. that leaves one with goosebumps
@genxdarkangel No, however the reason why you see so many asians in music is because in Asia (especially China) parents are very emphatic about music, especially piano and violin. They also tend to discipline their children in the art quite strictly.
@slug182 No one clapped because she was probably playing the entire Miroirs suite. This is a segment part of that suite, so they probably did clap...at the end of the entire piece though. :)
@slug182 It might be because this is not the last piece of the whole suite. She looked like she wasn't finished when this video was over, maybe she played the last piece (part 5), then people clap after.
Kind of a ridiculous comment, if you've ever listened to the orchestrated version, you'd know the way ravel wanted certain inflections tackled on the piano, which most pianists (even the masters) don't hit. This performance comes pretty damn close. Try listening to a good orchestral version, Rotterdam Philharmonic has an excellent version on YouTube. Try not to be so ignorant.
well once you have the right technique its pretty simple. my coach told me to practice it with the two fingers just gliding across the keys not actually playing (but playing the top and bottom notes). once the left hand is fluid and you feel confident add the right hand. use fingers 2 and 4 on the way up and fingers 1 and 3 on the way down.
her expression and feeling are superb, along with superb technique, leaving Berezovsky and Thibaudet in the shade.

better than Berezovsky..This young lady owns this Ravel masterpiece.

Exactly what part of this piece is "fiendishly difficult" ? Because after 1:43 (the end of the first part), the pace slows down considerably..
mozart20dlubos 1 year ago
@mozart20dlubos The first and last 2 minutes of this are enough to call it very difficult. No amateur would attempt to play this.
