  • oioioioi bom dia amigos

    um grande abraço

  • @leandroalex61 Obrigado meu Brazillian amigos

  • i will put linux on my ps3 and i heard there are 3 tipes of linux fedora unbugtu and other (i don't remember the name) what is better?

  • Back when KDE was still pretty and nice to use... *jaded by openSUSE 11.3's KDE 4.4.4*

  • search for record my desktop that is a great screen recording program for linux lol 5*

  • Linux Compiz was only out in Beta for 4 months when I recorded this, now over 3yrs ago. But the main reason I filmed on a camcorder instead, is that Record My Desktop puts too big of a hit on performance even now!

With this weak video card and 512mb ram it would have been crap recording! :D

btw my other Linux video has 1.6 million views and is much better!

  • the future is now, lets go back to the command line

  • compiz fusion is better :D

  • It's the same thing just newer name and version. In fact same dev team headed by Quinn Storm!

It all began only months before this video was put up by David Reveman of Novell with Compiz. Then Quinn split and formed the Beryl Team. Recently Beryl was reintegrated with Compiz as Fusion still headed by Quinn! :D

She is one hell of a dev! :P

  • ah ^ ^ it's just the name of the new version: p

it will change every year: P

  • @plenaxium

Squables & power plays by Novell's Reveman the past 3yrs against Quinn Storm & her Beryl Fork don't die easy. But her Configuration Panel vs Reveman's CLI config tools may be dead. haha

Let's face it right now in both Windows & Linux, hardware is progressing much faster than software. It seems that old diehard Linux users are hard to kill.

Nobody wants to spend days installing, compiling, configuring & CLI'ing their way to an OS install w/ XGL Compiz effects!

    Quinn Wins!

  • where did you got the wallpapoer and theme???

  • On my other Linux video, I have that information in the description. Just click on (more info) by the video profile icon! :D

    Thanks!

  • Can't there 'recordmydesktop' help you now?

  • @JanusKobain

Yes it could. But I haven't done a Linux video since I was 17yo (over 3yrs ago)! ;)

I don't think that there are many Compiz videos left from that time. After David Reveman introduced this in November 05!

I had one webcam video up in Jan '06, but took it down over two years ago. There were only a handful of us using XGL/Compiz then. I made this one in May, but didn't put it up on YT til July '06! :P

  • Well, I see. Thank for your attiention.

  • *attention

  • I am first time linux user, testing out live session of ubuntu from my cd rom. anyone recommend any audio or video editing software for ubuntu?

  • Audacity for audio & Cinelera for video!

They compare very well to programs on Windows or Mac in power!

    linuxDOTcom/feature/60624

Cinelera is not that intuitive, but once you learn it, you can do wonders with it!

I used to use only Windows or Mac programs. But they limit you, except for the most expensive programs from the big names & take massive resources.

I now use Gimp even on Windows now & I can do some stuff I can't do in Photo Shop. Cinelera is what Pros use! :P

  • sudo aptitude install gtk-recordmydesktop

    for video =) I use it ;)

  • Yep definitely highly recommend gtk-recordmydesktop. Although does YouTube accept ogg vorbis files? If not how do you convert them?

  • Many programs to convert ogg's in both Linux and Windows. But you can use VLC Player to convert ogg to mp4 so you can upload it to YouTube and there are tutorial vids on here to watch. Just search it!

btw... this video is simply my first experiment now almost 3yrs ago. Not that long after Reveman brought Compiz Beta out. Watch my other video! :D

  • Great! Thanks for the tips. I'll definately check out your other videos.

  • I use Kdenlive to convert my video ;)

VLC is also good, but it doesn't have a good quality :P

  • and now, you can use KDEnlive as a RecordMyDesktop frontend - even better!

I've always been a fan of KDEnlive. Simply amazing piece of video-editing software. Has been better then several alternatives for a long time now...

  • what version do u use pls tell me

  • its a good video but you shouldn't have tried and use a camera to record your desktop it never comes out well. good try though

  • This was the first video and is months older than the video I have posted with near 1.5 Million views!

Take into account that these were both on early beta software going on 3yrs ago!

So I think under the circumstances this video is not that bad and my ratings on the other one indicate it's one of the best on YouTube, if you watch in high quality! ;) Thanks!!!

  • yeah but even back then they had decent screen recording programs for the beta sofware

  • Not that worked that great or at least any better than what my other Linux video shows, the simple hardware I was running at the time! Check it out!

It hasn't gotten those great high ratings and view count for nothing! ;)

Please View in high quality, even though YouTube doesn't even comes close to the 720p camera I used then and had to down grade the movies from! :D ...and I agree this video is crap by comparison!!!

  • NicE

but use hypercam or camstudio, all use this

hypercam costs but u can use camstudio

  • Dude, Hypercam is a Windows program...

  • opps diddnt think about it but there is one called xvidcap

  • lol, thats a funny observation, what an irony :)

  • What is XGL? A new version of xorg ?

Im now running Hardy, (Ubuntu 8.04), with compiz-fusion, and it looks just like yours. But I lack a bit of performance, during multitasking with compiz. I know this is related to hardware, but is it related to the lack of gpu resource ? My specs: 1.6ghz sempron,768mb 133mhz ram, 7300gt nvidia clock speeds 333em/350gpu, though I can overclock to a 400mhz both, with no success in getting the lacked performance

  • What video card do you use?

  • Yes! So I've been reading lately! Looks like my laptop could handle it! I'm so eager to try it! Thanks, lads!

  • OMG!!!

This is the slickest looking GUI since... Minority Report... LOL!!

Truly amazing. The first time I saw Aero in action I thought: Cool.

But this is something else entirely... It flows, fast as f**k, insanely dynamic!

Oh, well... you must own one capable box... lol. My laptop couldn't possibly perform like that.

    Great video.

  • actually COmpiz fusion compiz beryl whatever 3D linux desktop he's using all of them are quiet light i can run most of those effects a bit slower but still very functionable on my Laptop with Intel Gma X3100 GPU 144MB of shared Vram definitely not a high end GPu at all and it's even blacklisted on Compiz fusion but still runs suprisingly well :D with pretty much any linux distro u really don't need a very powerful computer at all what's the specs of your laptop?

  • If you think the GUI is the de facto Linux OS, then you're absolutely wrong. The Windowing system in Linux was originally based on MIT's X-Windows. And this is merely a program that runs on top of the real OS. The real OS is the stuff the systems programmer interfaces with (and to a lesser degree a person who extensively uses a shell such as bash, csh, etc). And here lies the stuff of legends. That's what's awesome about UNIX. The Core OS. Not some colorful flashy lights to please the natives.

  • I personnaly prefer openGl. Directx 10 is buggy.

  • with that said. UNIX is the OS for powerful scientific, engineering and business applications. especially online, network and distgributed systems. While windows is growing to fill the niche, nothing equals the scalability of UNIX... However, for hte average user Linux will serve equally well as a free desktop OS replacement to Windows... Going further, to the gamer/game developer, DirectX 10 is currently the most advanced gaming technology, so here, Vista takes the cake

  • @rlinfinity

You almost have it right. But here's how Unix and Linux are really related. The Kernel they both run on, may be very close and even the some of same programs can run on them, because they use the same basic commands. It is after all a CLONE!

In fact they both use X-Windows (right now at least) as their graphical server. The actual Graphical User Interface (GUI), can be many of the same ones as well!

That would include KDE, Gnome and most of the rest of them. Part-1

  • But that's where the similarities end!

SCO has not touched or revised the Unix kernel since they acquired it from Novell. It still only runs on select hardware.

Whereas Linux is still the most versatile and widely distributed OS (across multiple platforms) in the World!

Being "Open Source" has it's advantages. Like having the NSA code the Kernel with "Secure Linux" features.

Meanwhile Unix is on Life Support and SCO just lost $Millions to Novell in court, with no new customers in ages! P-2

  • Unix for Scientific WHAT? LOLz Over half the Super Computers in the World run on some form of Linux. Linux owns over 90% of the HPC (High Performance Computing) Cluster Market. Including Millions of PS3 Gamers running Linux for over a Petaflop in FOLDING@HOME. Our own Government took delivery of Road Runner. A Hybrid Super Computer Topping a Petaflop by itself. Mercury Computers is the World Leader in Medical, Scientific, Visualization and Research running WHAT? Linux!

    Vista DX10 the Leader?

  • rlinfinity? It's time to dig you a new a**hole!

Again it's Open Source Powered OpenGL that is making a Monkey Boy out of both you and Steve Balmer!

Khronos Group (in charge of OpenGL API's) has gone beyond DX10's wildest dreams. Because not only does it run on more Hardware, it's now written in part by the people that make that hardware. Including: IBM, Intel, Nvidia, AMD/ATI, Nokia, Freescale, etc and is about to OWN the entire Next Generation of Mobile Devices w/ Google Android & GAMES! ;)

  • you moron! ... Linux is a PC version of UNIX meant to be a feature-heavy MINIX clone. MINIX itself was designed to emulate UNIX Version 7.0 at the basic level. All operating systems have been heavily influenced by UNIX and are HEAVILY based on it. So if anyhthing Windows/Mac copied UNIX. In fact they even try to conform to the POSIX standard.... retard!

  • The difference is that Linux doesn't make profit compared to Windows or Mac. You are the idiot.

  • how does that make me an idiot? :P clearly you're too stupid to pass basic comprehension. Linux being free has nothing to do with it. You basically stated Linux copied everything from Windows. But I pointed out the fact that Windows and all other OS have borrowed heavily and directly from the UNIX family of OS. And Linux is merely a modern incarnation of the UNIX family.

  • "You basically stated Linux copied everything from Windows."

FALSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's why I call you idiot.

  • Windows is Expensive

    Linux is Free

Windows copies others and try to make money out of it

Linux always in advance from others os

Mac has better Ideas than WIndows not from linux

They all tries to imitate them, but fails.

in performance but succed in brainwashing. ( marketing)

You can Install the OS that you want. I Prefer OpenSource OS. But Linux is great too because its free.

  • Windows is Expensive

    Linux is free

    Windows can run DX10

    Nuffsed

  • i lol @ ppl who pay for Windows / Programs

  • Agreed.

  • For me doesn´t matter whether it´s linux or vista ... those fancy annoying rotating things will not buy me ... remember the old internet days when you opened a website and you have to deal with those annoying javascript fx or more recently with thoses flash things ... i don´t need that nor i need my employees toying with that too. I need a solid OS and just install software to make the work done!

  • LINUX ALWAYS

    windows never

  • shaking your windows is the "future"?? loll

  • sweet, can you do that on a ps3 that has linux??

  • THat thing where you drag windows is so cool. how do you do that?

  • Mate, you don't need a TV card to record your desktop. To be honest I'm not a Linux user (unfortunately) but I am sure there are Linux programs which record your desktop (like Fraps for teh windoze).

  • compiz on ubuntu is the same

  • i got linux and how do u get the veiw in cube view?

  • @nuttyman44 I thought it would be better to give you a direct link to a page with shortcuts in a Private Message! :D

  • How have they achieved the huge improvements in the GUI responsiveness? Did they finally tie the GUI in with the Kernel/hardware. In the past I read time and again that the multiple layers (some separated by sockets) in userspace was the primary cause for its slugishness. Did they also improve sound? Same problems for same reasons.

I take it there still isn't an emulator that will pass dX/OGL commands directly to the real video card?

  • where did you download that from?

  • Having fun twirling your cube?

  • Don't need a cube for multiple desktops. Multiple desktops come standard, and they're my favourite way of organising my windows.

I really hate not having them in school...

  • I use Linux too, so no disrespect. But I wish people would show something else about linux besides compiz.....

  • Well, it's kinda hard to show off it's stability... That's something that you actually have to witness.

Although, there ARE things like boot races, download races, unzip races etc. on Youtube. Linux wins most of them XD

  • LOL @ "windows is the future of computers." my uptime is 60 days on my linux router.

  • This is only the beginning for me. I started to use Knoppix. When I get a bigger Hard Drive and more RAM I will be probably installing latest Linux operating system there is. To move away from windows products soon as possible cause vista is too restrictive and non PC user friendly.

  • is this ubuntu ?

  • suse

  • Hilarious.

  • you rule man, i love my pc

  • lunix yeaah!!!

  • ya know, i am tired of fighting over computers. they are all cool

  • were do you get that. is it vista compatible!?

  • lol. Dude, that is NOT vista compatible. Its not windows compatible. Its not Windows. Its linux.

  • Linux. nothing else to say.

  • linux would replace your windows operating system, unless you partition your hard drive and run two OS's. dont bother with an emulator... i tried it and it sucked...

  • someone has to tell me how to make my computer do that cube thing

  • There's a free program called Yod'm 3D.

  • Not free anymore. 20$ lol. Besides, Its probably more unstable than the linux version.

  • No, not really.

  • It's slower and has WAY less features. It is also a bit buggy.

  • i got a free desktop manager for osx that has a cube effect, but it is not like the linux desktop effects. if anyone has the time and patience to step me through the process of installing drivers and such so that my video card and sound card are recognized that would be swell...

  • That's done automatically. Just shrink the OSX partition from within the operating system (don't know how you'd do that with Mac), pop in the CD and install Linux to the largest continuous space. Reboot your computer, choose the Linux OS (you can still use OSX), update and... you're done!

Best thing is, the desktop cube comes with the repos, so you don't have to do much routing around for it.

  • It's not that simple with some distros. Some distros require that you compile and setup any 3d desktop environment yourself.

  • Yeah, some do, but I'm not sure which ones. I know that it comes in the *buntu and might come in the suse repositories, and I also know that the latest GNOME and KDE distros include some desktop effects (KDE 4.1 will be getting the desktop cube and wobbly windows, don't know about GNOME).

  • Get Linux

  • I must agree and it's hackproof

  • I must agree and it's hackproof

  • Linux is not hackproof.

A decent hacker can hack any system.

All you can say is that Linux is more secure than Windows since hackers don't bother to create viruses. Few users, few viruses...

But if somebody decides to specifically attack your system, they will succeed whatever your OS is.

  • The damage that can be done on a Windows system is not comparable to what can be done on a Linux system. On Windows you get to access any system file that you want as a regular user, in Linux, you don't have the permissions to access those important files, thus the worst that could happen is that you would have to create a new account if you ever got a virus in Linux.

  • @Fivizzz NSA says if you use Secure Linux (which is a patched Linux Kernel that is now in most every Linux system) that indeed you are far more secure than any Windows Operating System by far (this also includes Free BSD, and other UNIX clones). IBM has articles on "NSA Backing Secure Linux OS Development". In case you don't know, NSA stands for National Security Agency. What Operating System do you think they use? Yes, Secure Linux! ;)

  • dude thats awesome, do you have to be like a super genious to do this stuff? i'm thinking of getting linux on my new computer, but i dont know how to get this awesome stuff (3d cube, windows burn when you close them, etc..)

  • I just finished installing Linux Ubuntu, he is using some other OS, I dont know which, but you can modify your own to look like that. I dont know how, but I'm having a friend teach me, find someone that knows lots about Linux, and let them help you out.

  • WOW. Windows can be wobbled or bent. Home computing is getting so much better.

  • I think this has been on for a while, the fact is that big companies like Microsoft and Mac hinder our ability to go look out there for some cool stuff thats going on.

  • linux is deffinately the future , but at the moment PC is the one

  • linux runs on the pc idiot

  • shit, i typed too quickly, i mean microsoft and im not an idiot, im actually rather bright

  • light bulbs are bright! but by no means clever...

  • oh, sorry.

  • r0fl th0se g33ks! XDDD

  • g33ks will have much more comfortable, functional and simple UI than "normal people" in a year or two.

I could argue that they already has it.

  • Yea, unfortunatelly. Another sad thing is that most videogames, and online applications are programmed to run for Microsoft or Mac, rarely for Linux. Im not saying there is nothing for Linux out there, there is lots actually, but its a bit different.

  • just use wine...

  • lol

  • Or Crossover, depends which you have more of - time or money...

    I've got wine sussed. (y)

  • dont die over it, jeeez wtf is wrong with u, u didnt make it either

  • Open Source. This guy could have helped program this distro. Way to know.

  • geez... don't have a hernia over it...

    ... very persnickity.....

  • Dude... chill. Same happens with cars, think about it, we just buy and buy and buy, and show off like we made them ourselves (especially with expensive ones). Rarely is the case in which one person builds something as useful as a car, or operating systems, or airplanes, you name it, today.

  • Cool 3D, I love the blue! Most people use only black and grey and it's ugl. Lots of cool effects also lol.

  • Yes but windows blows and sucks just like Bart said.

  • linux doesnt blow. i use windows and linux, and its much easier to use, and it just fun using it. like a mac.

  • i dont have windows i have mac

  • Then you're an idiot for saying "linux blows" when the OS you're using is dependent upon open source software. You might as well say "FreeBSD blows" or "Open Solaris blows"... they're all open *nixes dumbass.

  • Which is a *nix based OS. So, you're stating some of Mac blows as well?

  • Hey AWESOME music. it really made this 3:08 video A LOT more enjoyable to watch

  • how do you make the cube smaller, mine doesn't zoom out to far... =/

  • How do you add the almost mac icon bar to Ubuntu?

  • useless cosmetic!

  • kroneage, you must give a try to Istanbul, a screen recorder for gnome. Search for "Istanbul screen cast" in google.

  • Windows sucks did you ever worked with mac or linux please they are so much better, people are really an idiot when they say windows rules without ever worked with mac or linux.

  • Widows isn't all that bad. It honestly depends on a users experiences. I like windows. havn't worked much with linux. macs... not such a gr8 experience for me cuz they had it at my elementary and middle school with the crappy os 9 and first os x. however, eventually, i may get a laptop so that i can have all 3 types of os's on my comp

  • dual booting windows and linux ftws if only i cud tripple boot with mac.

  • you can, technically.

  • thats not true of Linux, even though its open source, it doesnt make it non-user friendly

  • You know why some people dont want to use Linux? because its FREE, thats why, they dont trust it, lol, so, if they put a price, then everyone its gonna use it, but they are not gonna pay for it anyway, theyll use P2P, its the fact that its free what scares them away, weird, eh?

  • Yeah, its kinda strange. Not only that, but a lot of people simply aren't aware of it. Companies like the one that makes ubuntu should advertise, and also provide a windows installer so people can upgrade without screwing with the BIOS.

  • They have something like "Windows Installer", I installed here with no problems at all...hmm...and the one that make ubuntu(canonical) DOES advertise

  • Who fed you that, Bill Gates?

  • There are commercial linux distro's, stick to the facts, pal.

  • This is true, but I'm a HUGE fan of paying free dollars for things.

  • I did not ever pay for an application, not yet.

  • new versions will come with the windows installer so you install from there with out messing with the bios.

  • no you need a video recorde like instanbull beryl now is called compiz ...if you have a slower or older video card is recomended to disable compiz to have greater performance

  • is this beryl ?

  • 'tis doesn't have to be a cube. You can have a 32 sided shape if you want, or just a 5 sided, or 3 sided, or 9 sided... and they all look like the appropriate shape. Cubes are good though because they are standard shapes.

  • What's the point of all those useless animations? I don't think many people care about rubber effects on their windows, or even want it. And a cube view? Wow, what a rip-off of Mac's Spaces. It just looks really gimmicky and pointless.

  • This is my version of a polished up sports car to drive around town.

  • this out before macs had this, this was out in 2002, mac had this in 2004

  • well, so many people just buy windows vista crap ust because of its graphics, this beryl stuff will proof them that they can reach same -even better- stuff with opensource..

if you don't want this, just do NOT install..

  • It doesn't need Direct X.

  • It does if it wants to do anything useful.

  • DirecX 10 means exactly _NOTHING_. It's just a new version of a Microsoft game API (google that if you don't know what it means).

That doesn't prevent anyone from writing their own API to expose the same functionality to applications - games in this case. Like OpenGL for graphics, OpenAL for audio and so on...

Basically, what you get for money (Vista isn't free - maybe only if you steal it or get it through MSDNAA), I get for free (Linux is free for everyone).

  • Who uses pcs for games anymore anyways? Yes, I can make comments that dumb because you've already opened the gate for it.

  • direct x is only supported through programs like cedega that are designed to run windows games on linux, BTW I dont play computer games anymore besides "Starcraft and Starcraft 2" when it comes out, my gamecube and wii covers my needs

  • It's cool but you can't work good with it.

  • I work better with multipul desktops then without. The cube makes things much, much easier.

  • how do you get the cube?

  • download compiz then install. Configure your settings in advanced desktop settings and viola!

  • but your video card should support it

  • also, Ubuntu comes with compiz.

  • This only proves that Open Source Delevopment can far outbeat a big company like Macrosoft (not a typo).

  • sooo much bluuuuuue.....lol great vid, realy makes vista look bad :D

  • I really love how one can switch from desktop to desktop. It could greatly reduce the need and expense of running multiple monitors in most circumstances.

  • damn

  • WICKED!

  • Well why would developers have to develop drivers for certain hardware. The operating system is open source so there are many developers who can actually write drivers.

  • Go read my comment again. I clearly said "hardware companies writing drivers for software", not the other way around.

  • noobs should get mepisDOTorg which is Ubuntu plus.

Burn the image to CDrom, reboot, click install icon on the desktop after you've played a bit.
